TRANSCRIPT
Hi there. I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined.
This is the third in a 6-part video series on launching a peer reviewed scholarly journal. This part is called, Finding Articles and Authors.
Perhaps the most important aspect of the journal launch process is sustainability. Can you sustain manuscript submissions to support a journal and are there enough interested readers? I suggest you allot more time than you imagine to finding quality manuscripts.
Start with a Call for Papers. This brief document announces the journal and specifies what kind of content it is looking for. It is an advertisement looking to find manuscripts and authors. Once again, shoot high when seeking papers. The Call for Papers concludes with how to reach the editor and where find the journal. This Call will exist and be used long after launch.
This document is used by the editor, editorial board, and other ambassadors for the journal. It may be posted at the website, on message boards, or sent out to related organizations for them to disseminate among their members.
Manuscript solicitation is best done in person. An editor or board member might call or speak with a person they know and invite them personally. They can follow up with an email and the Call for Papers. If the first or other issues have been published, provide links to the best articles.
At conventions or conferences, the editor should approach presenters and invite them to submit a manuscript. Once again, quality is the key. Only ask the best people for their best work.
Another approach is by having the journal align itself with the key institutions in the field. This may be through the selection of board members or ambassadors. Or it may be through the personal appeals for manuscripts.
Board members should strongly be encouraged to submit a manuscript once a year or so. If they don’t have current work, they can solicit it from their circle. This is called give or get. They submit one or help secure one.
By finding and publishing only the best and highest quality work, a journal will succeed. Many readers give a new journal only one chance. Quality content lead to frequent readers, more downloads, and more citations. We will talk more in video five about the importance of promotion, including abstracting and indexing. A steady flow of new authors and return readers is the key to long term success.
Well that’s it. I am a publishing consultant and work with associations, publishers, and individuals on a host of content related challenges including launching a new journal. Reach out to me at RiverwindsConsulting.com with your questions.
