Her follow up album, Unplugged is way better than Miseducation. Miseducation is internal struggle that affects personal life while Unplugged is about external struggles and how they affect the personal. Lauryn Hill is by far the best emcee ever. She murders with her words or wisdom and truth.

This was a Wyclef Jean diss. During the recording of The Score, Lauryn Hill began a romantic relationship with Wycleaf who was married. By the time The Score hit shelves in February of 96, rumors of a relationship between Hill & Jean had emerged. She made this song after their fallout.

Ms. Lauryn Hill is from New Ark, New Jersey. Her ex partner is Rohan Marley, a son of the legendary Bob Marley. She has 5 kids with him, they never got married. This track is supposed to be a diss track to Wyclef Jean, whom she dated. He's 1/3 of her group the fugees. He's Haitian Maybe that's why she's using Patois in her vocabulary. You should react to Lauryn Hill - Final Hour. That song is just full of wisdom. And that flow is out of this world.

In my opinion the line referencing emancipation has to do with freeing her mind of political or socioeconomic control of the masses. Especially in her later album the MTV Unplugged she really did a phenomenal job of spreading a "free your mind" message, and takes us on her own personal journey of self discovery, and growth. This is what I appreciate about Ms Lauryn Hill.

I was going to tell this story if you reacted to "to Zion" from this album but I'll drop it here real quick. When the Fugees came out with "The Score" in 1996 it was rumored that Lauryn Hill had a sexual relationship with one of the other members. It was assumed by many to be Pras because he was a ladies man and Wyclef was married. It turns out the unthinkable was true. Lauryn was sleeping with her married group-mate, Clef. Clef and Lauryn used to butt heads hard and would get into physical fights behind the scenes. Afterwards they would have make up sex. In one situation Pras recounted how Lauryn was throwing blows at Clef on a private a private flight. They had to be separated. When the plane landed no one could find them. They were eventually found together in the back of the plane. So, here's the really scandalous part. Their affair carried on well into when Lauryn started working on her solo album and after she started a relationship with one of the producers on her album, Bob Marleys son, Rohan Marley. In that time she got pregnant and for the duration of her pregnancy she told Clef the baby was his. She didn't tell him the truth until literally the day the kid was born. Both Pras and Clef alluded to all this in their books and in interviews. Pras said Lauryn is one of the most vindictive persons he's ever met. When she dropped her solo album she was supposed to have 4 singles/videos but only 3 was released. Lauryn wanted "to zion" as the 4th but the record company wanted "every ghetto every city" or one of the other ones. Partly because they didn't think to zion would do well and another part because Clef didn't want her to release "To Zion" because it's about the kid she lied to him that he fathered. At that time Clef had a lot of sway with the record company. He would later get "Maria Maria" released for Carlos Santana--who coincidentally played guitar on "to Zion." Lauryn said if it can't be the song she wanted, she won't do another video and that's why there's only 3 official singles. At the 99 Grammys Lauryn won 5 awards. She was supposed to close the show with her hits do wop (that thing) and ex factor. She ran into Carlos Santana at the show and at the last minute decided to perform a full version of "To Zion" instead. It was her way of socking it to Clef who was in the audience. Shortly thereafter Lauryn's behavior became increasingly erratic. She was giving an award to a young Hydeia Broadbent-'who was a child activist born with HIV--and she inexplicably started bawling her eyes out dragging out her short speech. A couple years later she did an MTV unplugged where she would start bawling in between and in the middle of songs. It was such a wreck that the record company wanted to shelf it but ultimately relented to its release. As the years went on it went downhill (no pun intended) from there for the feminist intellectual preacher. It was rumored that her grammy performance was the last straw for Clef and being from Haiti, he let loose some voodoo on her and that's what caused her decline. It may seem like a joke. Being from the islands, I believe it. Also because Clefs father was a voodoo priest and he's encouraged people of Haiti to follow voodoo teachings. It should be worth noting that Clef addressed this saying people ask him what he did to Lauryn and he swears he didn't do anything. The mere fact that he would even addressed something that's only rumored on the fringe is suggestive that he's done exactly what those rumors claim. Poor Lauryn. I still love, admire and respect Lauryn Hill. I own both her studio album and the MTV Unplugged album. To me, the miseducation of Lauryn Hill, minus the annoying classroom lectures, is one of the greatest albums ever. There's a song called "mystery of iniquity" on her unplugged album. An interpolation of the song was used by Kanye for the song "all falls down." Kanye tried to use a sample but wasn't able to get clearance. If my memory serves me correctly, Kanye was asked why he used Syleena Johnson on the track instead of Lauryn and he said something along the lines of "because Lauryn is not well." He wasn't very kind in his response and had to later walk it back. Its ironic that he's now dealing with his own mental struggles. He's not well, but he'll sure get the respect he didn't give to Lauryn back then.

Also the artist who sell their souls for fame in the music industry. This thought became amplified when she came out with her more recent song that was mad controversial "I'll Get Out". "I know all the tricks from bricks to kingston" = Brick City, New Jersey. She is very close to the Marley family in Jamaica, and that's where she recorded some of The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, which is one of the greatest albums ever made. It could also be a double entendre, as in Brixton to Kingston. She performed memorable concerts at London's Brixton Academy in the 90s. Now here's some incredible recommendations off the top of my head that you will love. Lauryn Hill - Guarding The Gates. A masterpiece! Lauryn Hill & Ron Isley - Close To You. Again this is a masterpiece of soul singing. Lauryn Hill - The Mystery Of Iniquity. This will let you know why Nas rates Lauryn as one of the greatest rappers of alltime and I recall him putting her right at the top of his list in an old interview. And why she is one of the greatest songwriters of her generation. Mary J Blige ft Lauryn Hill - Be With You (Remix). John Legend ft Lauryn Hill - So High (Remix). Joss Stone ft Lauryn Hill - Music. Curtis Mayfield ft Lauryn Hill - Here but I'm gone (Remix). Lauryn Hill - The World Is A Hustle. Thats's just a few. I could go on and on. Now here's a tip. Try and find the bootleg of a concert she did in Chicago in 2004. Its one of the greatest live performances I've ever heard. I've had the priviledge to see her live multiple times. Its not hard to see why Michael Jackson was desperate to sign her to his label MJJ records before she signed her deal with Columbia records (though he owned half of Sony's publishing so in a way she was still kinda signed to him). She is a genius. One of the greatest R&B singers of alltime. One of the greatest rappers of alltime. One of the greatest songwriters of alltime. And lets not forget that she produced songs for Aretha, Whitney Houston, Cece Winans, Mary J Blige, and Carlos Santana. In fact one of Aretha's last great hit records was the Lauryn Hill written and produced, A Rose Is Still A Rose. You can hear Lauryn's background vocals on the track. She also directed the video. This is just some of her achievements before the age of 25. She is one of the greatest artists of alltime!

Jack, she was getting biblical actually in her verses. If you know anything of the Bible, you can recognize all of the scriptural verses that she's referencing in her rhymes, making them poetic in her delivery. This song was her response to her not so amicable split with Wyclef Jean and the Fugees. I could list all of the Bible verses that many of her lyrics in this track were referencing but that would make this comment too long, LOL. Oh, btw, nothing she is saying has anything to do with Egyptian philosophy or pyramids, lol, like I said earlier, the wisdom she's spitting comes from the Bible. :)
