Mud Sink Removal: The last mud sink I removed from a basement is now a planter out in the yard. Even though many are busted up in place with a sledge and are carried out in pieces, they can be removed intact. The easiest way I have found is to use a heavy duty piano dolly, some cargo straps (to hold it to the dolly) and a couple long 2x12s (or thick plywood) to make a ramp out of the stairs. Then protect any finished floors with thick cardboard so the piano dolly doesn’t leave marks. I have done it with the ramp boards and no dolly, sliding the sink on its flat side, but a dolly makes it easier. It usually takes a couple people, with some pushing from below and someone at the top with a rope, but it is very doable. Strap the sink on the dolly with the narrow side down, to give it the best chance at going through the doorway at the top of the stairs. Once up on the first floor and rolled near the exit, a few guys can carry it out into the yard. Moving one is a good exercise in family bonding and they make great planters for years to come. Ours sits on four 2” thick concrete patio blocks. I like to cap the water lines after removal, so no one can open a valve accidentally and flood the basement. Getting it out is work, but produces the recovered floor space of 1 more Metro rack.

I would suggest making over the large concrete sink into a desk type unit. You could get a piece of wood to fit over it, then use the wall space behind, for shelves. Also, you might use the ceiling area downstairs for storage by running bars the same direction and hanging up things or for your packing supplies.👍👏🤗

Extra Box Storage Idea: Tack some 1/4” thick wood or lath straps to the underside of your floor joists and boxes shorter then 11” tall and narrower then the joist spacing can store between the floor joists. Your overstock bundles of smaller new boxes could also be stored that way to save space on the metro shelves, since you only need one open bundle of each size at hand. You could do this over much of the basement ceiling, were there is space to stand and reach up.

Same idea might also work for the extra roles of bubble wrap and bags of packing peanuts. If they could wedge up between floor joists, they would clear floor space, but instead of lath strips, some small eye bolts and bungee type cords would keep them from falling down.

Here is an idea for your space of the dry sink in basement: build around the sink and make a table over the sink and shelves above to store your packing items. Or for inventory. An idea for your boxes is to take a board, drill a hole at each corner, attach a pulley system and attach to the beams, pack your flat boxes on the board and you can hoist the board up and down when you need to get to your boxes. Sounds complicated but its actually very simple. A job for Roger!

Hanging shelves from ceiling to store all of your packing supplies. My father made these in our basement and they would rotate down about a foot so that my mom could easily reach them. (I have no idea how he did that but I’m sure Roger could figure that out.) He also made a large wire basket that hung down and she could store smaller things. Just an idea… I would set my sink up as an area to clean your items. That way you don’t have to use your kitchen sink. I’m so happy for you and Roger! Have a safe and fun Honeymoon!💕

I bought a 3ft rolling wire rack with 5 shelves. I break all my boxes down and sort them small to large on each shelf. Works like a charm and I have tons of boxes always available. Congratulations!🎉🎉

I lived in a house once (many a moon ago) with an extremely long closet rod. It wasn't screwed to all of the brackets from underneath. I didn't realize to check on it and one night that thing popped/broke and clothes went everywhere during the middle of the night, frightening! The screws break the stress of the load. We have wire shelving in our closet. There is a long stretch of double hung space with shelves on top and bottom. The bottom shelf is great for 'hiding' things because the clothes cover them up. Your addition is gorgeous.
