Even Mary recognized that on the occasion when she (at Carson's prompting) was going to tell Matthew her feelings. It's really good writing that Lavinia doesn't let Matthew go JUST because he loves someone else. When two people don't truly click, then they just don't; there's no way around it. And Lavinia saying she wasn't meant for the life of a Countess indicates that even if Matthew never loved Mary or was really over her, their relationship still wouldn't have worked. Ultimately, Lavinia doesn't just end the engagement for Matthew's sake; she does it for herself, as well.

She wishes him happiness because as she says, "I'm an ordinary person." So was Matthew in the beginning. She only says "how fine," because in all reality she knows the battle is lost. Not out of losing to Mary so much as Matthew's own inconsistencies and lack of dedication. Sure it's noble of him to soldier on, but what's truly to keep him from committing adultery regardless? In her heart she knows, absolutely nothing. And the evidence for her case has been building steadily and steadily to where the evidence has reached the the state of overwhelming. Better to release him now or give the aspect of it to alleviate him of his conscience to allow him to do what he WANTS to do. Because in all reality she knew that Matthew is just that, unfaithful. She has self-worth as she admits but to say "not enough to make you marry the wrong person." It is because she knows his heart just is not in their marriage because in a way she knows just as she may have been self-sacrificing, Matthew is not. He can't even respect the premise of engagement to say to Mary to back off because of exactly that, He doesn't want to. "I won't let you do this." She knows you can't fool her, you idiot. "You will."
