Fun fact about that 1984 Monaco GP: Yes, Prost (and the French bias at the FIA at that point) got them to stop the race, which secured his victory that race. But because only half points were awarded, Prost would ultimately lose the title by 0,5 points to Lauda. If he had finished the full race in Monaco in 2nd place behind Senna he would have won the world title.

I grew up in the 90's when I would sometimes watch the race on TV, and remember hearing the roar of the engines going around Albert Park in Melbourne as I walked around the city. However, it's only this year that I started following F1 properly, and discovered that a new Australian driver was in the lineup. I did my research, and the more I learnt about Oscar, the more I admired him. His cool headed but aggressive approach to racing really drew me. His consistent and methodical style will be one of his greatest strengths. Once he nails tyre management he will be a force to beat. Having Mark Webber as manager is just the icing on the cake, a double Aussie duo with a lot to prove! Of course I have a little Australian bias, but he's my favourite to watch as well as Yuki and Nico. Thankyou for all your content Laws, you're my go-to for F1 news and stories. A lot of people are under the impression that Oscar's tyre management has not improved at all, but since the Miami GP he has shown an insane step forward in overall race pace: Miami - maintained a gap with Max Verstappen of ~2s for 25 laps whilst having two Ferrari's on his tail Imola - impeding penalty (no fault of his own) set him back, but was still able to push and undercut Carlos for P4 and once again kept pace with the top 5 (Max, Lando, Charles, Carlos) Monaco - managed his tyres and kept pace with Charles for ~68 laps until the end where damage from Carlos in Lap 1 (around 0.2s loss of pace) limited his final push. Canada - kept pace with Lando throughout the crazy mixed conditions race (especially in those drying conditions where they were setting b2b fastest laps). Only lost his podium place because of the need to defend against the Mercs (which essentially saved Lando's P2). Spain - a true off weekend where he couldn't find the ideal setup, but still made progress from p10 to p7 Austria - a very hot tyre deg heavy race which is essentially Oscar's nightmare. But, he kept pace with Lando and Max in the Sprint to overtake Lando and finish P2. During the race (once again lost P3 quali position to a questionable track limits penalty) was able to perform some insane overtakes at Turn 6 to jump up to P4 from P7 and would've inherited that P3 on merit prior to the incident considering his pace at the end, but still finished P2 and was keeping pace with Max and Lando at the end as well. Seriously, in Austria the entire reason Oscar was able to push at the end was because he extended his initial two stints to gain that important tyre advantage, and during this type of hot and high deg race Oscar would've never been able to do that before. When you consider that Oscar has 33 race starts compared to the 100+ race starts everyone else has around him, his progression and ability to learn is already so impressive. And honestly it's not like his tyre degradation is bad, he just has a very strong teammate who has excellent tyre management skills so it skews the perception a bit. People tend to just go along with what commentators or pundits say, but if you actually pay attention, barring Spain and China, Oscar has never been wildly off of Lando's race pace this season, 1-2 tenths at most. There is no doubt that he will be up there sooner, rather than later.
@bjs7442
@bjs7442 4 ай бұрын
I agree he is not been wildly off Landos pace but he has been off and his tyre management has improved but still has a long way to go. What is surprising is how Lando has dominated Qualifying against Oscar. After 34 races plus sprints Oscar should be pressurising Lando and he isnt doing it regullrly. The reality is Lando does not feel threatened by Oscar and is now seen as leading Mclaren.
@dangraycon
@dangraycon 4 ай бұрын
Deluded take imo: Miami, had the fastest car, but didn’t make any impression to catch up with Max, while Lando put in fastest lap after fastest lap at the end of the stint. He was fine, but look at the gap Lando put on Max at the end. Imola, look at the data, his final stint was way off Lando, I remember seeing a graph that showed everyone’s pace that weekend to show Lando catching Max. Monaco, shouldn’t get credit for managing tyres, he just has to keep the car behind, which is easy to do at Monaco and you can crawl to the line if needed. He had 2 cars on his ass the whole race. Easy to blame on damage, so I’ll go easy on that one. Canada, he did not keep up with Lando. Lando was 13 seconds clear of 2nd place before the safety car, and only pushed down to 3rd due to bad luck/bad team call. I do agree that Piastri sacrafised his race and did a great 2nd driver role. Spain, I agree. Austria, he kept pace early, then let Max drive off into the distance... Lando was behind with DRS the whole race, and is not risking a move with his teammate in a sprint, but clearly had far more pace. In the race, Lando and Max were super clear and I think Oscar should pick up P1 there, even with the poor and unlucky qualifying positioning, that McClaren was rapid, although he made some brilliant moves. In conclusion, great number 2 driver of a top team or number 1 of upper midfield, nothing more until he improves race pace and management, which I don’t expect

Agreed, he's already a great driver, but now he has to combine that with the fragile balance of the car and tyres, and he is showing that he's a fast learner. I think in turn it also pushes Lando more into desperation mode against Max, because Lando also knows that he makes very few mistakes. So if Lando overcooks it, there's a danger of being overtaken by Oscar, and even worse, crash out and Oscar even overtaking him in the championship. 44pts difference still, but with everyone close in points and performance inbetween, things could potentially swing all kinds of ways.

With all respect to Norris and his talent, I do think he lacks the mental strength to deal with the pressure and all the negativity that will inevitably come once you're no longer the new underdog, but actually start winning. I remember watching Oscars 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup campaign a couple of years ago, the videos for each round I would assume, are still available on KZbin. Anyway, during that season he kept getting run off track by Victor Martins, especially when trying to overtake for the lead. It clearly pissed him off more and more as the season progressed, the body language was clear, but he said nothing about it during post race interviews. He knew that challenging a French drivers abilities in a French championship was a zero sum game. Instead he reassessed where and how to overtake him at each venue, where Martins getting his elbows out would be less effective, and of course the rest is history. If Oscar is faster than Max at some point in future, I’m expecting to see similar calculated racing. He’ll quickly learn where Max is most likely to go all chicken wings, and find the best opportunities for cleaner overtakes. There will be some carnage during the learning curve, but in my opinion Oscar could potentially, eventually become a championship building machine. He very much eyes the long game. I also think the Constructors Title is well and truly on for McLaren too this year btw. Oscar and Lando can taste it too, I’m sure.

@@irwinrommel2099 No driver likes getting beat by his teammate but I somehow don't see a clash between them. I think it's more getting used to race at the top. He's been used to the midfield with sporadic podiums for his first few years, so it's a change of mindset and vibes. And Oscar is more calm and rational than Nico and Lewis, he knows now is not the time to fight with Lando and sees the big picture (Him letting Lando come back in front of him in Canada was a good proof of that). But next year, things will change I'm pretty sure.

Its always next year when we will see the potential of Oscar. They have a competitive car this year. I suspect next year people will still talk about his potential. He is now no rookie. He has competed in 40 F1 races under his belt already. Lando after 40 races was well into his third year of racing. Oh and top tyre management doesn't come the more you race if it did Perez would be the king. You start with a talent for it . Its not a given that Oscar will improve more than modestly. He is a very good driver but WDC material ?. He is quite some way off that level. He will have race wins and be in demand.

Oscar has a composure far beyond his years. Humility that is obviously true and he seems to be a driver who learns from his mistakes. When you see him under pressure in a race situation it's hard to believe he is only in his sophomore season. McLaren found a gem of a driver and one that could potentially develop into a future WDC. He does need to work on his tire management and quite possibly the future issues with a competitive teammate.

I don't think it'll take much longer at all for the race pace to pick up at all, really. Look how much is improved this year alone. Remember Carlos took him out at Miami, got the 5 place grid penalty at Imola, a 3 place penalty here at Austria. Which, one of them was obviously his fault. But otherwise, you put that into the mix, and you'll probably see he's improved already this year, a lot. And he hasn't even had 2 seasons racing F1 yet. So he'll improve more than Lando will. And I think he's okay at McLaren, as long as Stella is there. He'll let them decide on track who's number 1 and number 2. But if McLaren is run by a Britt, then Lando will be their number 1 for sure.

Thanks to his cool temperament and absolute fearlessness I think Oscar has one of the highest skill ceilings of any drivers on the grid. Once he’s able to hone his skills he will be absolutely devastating. That being said whilst I definitely think Oscar is incredible and has a very interesting personality and style compared to other drivers. Personally I still want to see what Charles is able to do with more experience in race winning machinery. Genuinely think that if Charles is able to have a race winning car he would be as good if not better than Verstappen. A 5 way race between Piastri, Norris, Verstappen, Leclerc and Hamilton will be incredible!

Make no mistake, he certainly does not yet have the absolute genius of Max Verstappen, but he can indeed play the same kind of role as Prost in the future. It is quite ignorant to think or suggest that within this generation and even future generations, a super talent like Max Verstappen would be on the way within the same era!

I do not understand why some people feel like Piastri betrayed Alpine or did something unethical or immoral when he signed with McLaren. Alpine did everything possible to NOT give Piastri a seat up until Alonso officially announced he was leaving Alpine. For some reason Alpine decided to give Ocon a multi year contract early, but fought Alonso tooth and nail against giving him a multi year deal as well when it was time to negotiate with him. Up until the time, it was clear that there was absolutely no seat available for Piastri at Alpine for 2023 and it was very likely that there would not be a seat open at Alpine until 2025. So many promising, young drivers get stuck waiting as a reserve driver for many years and never get a seat. Alpine made it extremely clear that Piastri was not a priority and it seemed extremely likely that he would end up like all the other promising talent that waste away into oblivion in the reserve role. Until the Alonso fall out, Piastri had absolutely no chance at getting a seat anytime soon unless he could sign somewhere else. Basically, he could gamble on maybe getting a seat in two years with Alpine or get he could sign and get a guaranteed (McLaren guarantee is fairly week as we’ve seen since, but that’s not the point) seat the next season. It was an absolutely slam dunk, no-brainer type of decision to join McLaren. Alpine decided Ocon was their man and Alonso was more of a mascot or teacher. I never liked Ocon and I thought Alpine should buy him out of his remaining contract and give Alonso and Piastri the 2023 seats at the time. The Piastri could learn while trying to out do Alonso. I understand why Alpine wanted Ocon because he was a known quantity and was competitive with Alonso. Alpine wanted everything though and in the end got nothing. I don’t like how young drivers get stuck with whichever team finances their early careers. I get it, but it just seems to be more unfair than it could be considering so many drivers never get a chance while mediocre drivers continue to get signed.

Max, Charles and George got some time in a less competitive car before getting a drive in a top car (George probably had too much time in the Williams though). Even Lando got time in a less competitive McLaren to learn the ropes. Except for a few early races last year, Oscar's McLaren has been fast and the pressure has been on him all the time to be competitive. He seems to have handled the pressure well. You only have to look at Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly in the Red Bull to see what pressure can do to an inexperienced driver. I hope Oscar does get to challenge Max. It would be very interesting.
