We need a music union for indie musicians. We need a conglomerate of talented creators that work together as a unit almost like a music label & are armed with lawyers. That group needs to collect fees from indie musicians and provide them with lawyers to go after KZbin and other streamers and illegal downloaders. Then that pool or union should train an AI model directly and exclusively off its own musicians. This way anyone in the union can blend music using AI, while also getting partial writing credits if anyone in the union creates an AI hit trained off their band. This will create a pool of talent that functions as a unit, blending styles and linking songwriters & performers, like music did in the old days. We must go after anyone who illegally downloads or streams. We must break from the legacy musicians who did not defend the right to earn money off music, and we must shift the narrative that it is not cool to earn money from music.

Making your own Record Label/publishing company is the only way to make it fair. Your can collaborate as a business on your behalf for your own music to grow in the industry. It is SLOW and takes a lot of work but it is SUPER SUSTAINABLE

I totally get the appeal of going independent, but it’s not the only path to success. Running your own label or publishing company is a lot of work and can be slow, as you mentioned, but it’s also tough to manage everything alone. Sometimes partnering with an established label or team can open doors faster, and you can still negotiate deals that protect your interests. It’s all about finding the right balance that works for your goals and resources.

@ i’m currently in the process of doing that and it’s very frustrating but the fact that I’ve lost so much money over the years keeps me motivated to continue. The good thing about it is that you’re not considering is that as you make money you can hire help you can also form a team, and that’s what I’m trying to do right now it’s not gonna be on my own because having an actual company requires actual human beings to be part of the company.

@@MichaelOrtega I understand the frustration you're feeling. It's tough, but it's great that you're staying motivated. Building a team is definitely key to scaling and making it all work. You don’t have to do it alone-bringing in the right people can really push things forward.

@@WeCreateMusicTV absolutely one step at a time. When I’m done fixing the organization I’m gonna put my info on LinkedIn for networking for business purposes because I’m learning a lot about the music business and older musicians that already have an incorporation can help each other out.

Record labels have always concentrated on the business side of the entertainment industry and how to make a profit. Just look at the "Oldies But Goodies" crisis, most of those recording artists died penniless in poverty while their music is still being played today and generating revenue.
@WeCreateMusicTV2 ай бұрын
That’s definitely true-labels have historically focused on profit, sometimes at the expense of the artists. The “Oldies But Goodies” situation is a sad example of artists not seeing the long-term benefits from their own work. However, things are shifting with more artists gaining knowledge about contracts and ownership. Today, there are more ways to protect your rights and profit from your music, even within a label structure, if you go in informed and advocate for fair terms.

In the old days record companies were needed to provide the upfront capital to pay for the recording, production, manufacturing, and distribution of the physical records, tapes, and CD's, plus bribing a few radio program managers along the way. Now with no need to front the money for physical distribution and no radio stations to bribe, what exactly are record companies good for?

TLC’s story is by far the WORST one of them all. I was going to say Lupe, as that “Airplanes” situation was messed up, but none can top TLC’s ordeal. Glad they got their money’s worth on “Fanmail.” Honorable mentions are New Edition in their early years and En Vouge. Their stories are similar, but that story of NE getting their first check for about $1.30 and they still had to split it five ways was insane!
@WeCreateMusicTV2 ай бұрын
TLC’s story is definitely one of the most infamous, and it really opened people’s eyes to just how brutal those early contracts could be. It’s wild to think they had all that success and barely saw any of the money. New Edition’s story is just as crazy-the idea of splitting $1.30 five ways is almost unbelievable! It’s sad to see so many talented artists go through that, but at least their experiences have helped future generations understand the importance of knowing what’s in the fine print.

No wonder the new music is usually coming from unsavvy young folks... predatory industry... language: cruelty to humans: business, all is ok Dictator, ooh that's wrong Difference: words People not $! I think artists are necessary for major labels to succeed...

Pretty sure any artist in the pre-streaming era would not have complained if they got 40%. Most artists were getting single digits

Sounds like being half a step up from being an unpaid intern. Correct that - it’s worse, at least an intern knows what the deal is.

No reason to sign any deal! You will spend thousand upon thousands of dollars just to have an audit of your actual pay. Look what Big Sean had to go through $250k audit only to find out the $6M owed wouldn’t get paid by G.O.O.D Music.

The labels have so much power. They seemingly can manufacture stars/hits at will, the artists are just pawns in their scheme. We can really see the power of marketing when the artists who went indie had big drop offs in popularity. The labels can and do use marketing as a carrot and stick to keep their artists in these horrible contracts.
@orlock202 ай бұрын
It takes a lot of money to promote an artist. Even when Beyonce was well known, the label spent $3 million to promote each album and $1 million to promote each single. Very few artists can make that kind of money back. If that money is not spent, that artist seems to just disappear from the public.
@MichaelOrtega2 ай бұрын
This is why you have to play the long game and stop worrying about making your music blow up every night. It might be better not to make music about shallow things like money and women and actually focus on music that is relevant for decades that way as you grow in your career, you continue to be able to makesales on your songs because the songs are relevant
@WeCreateMusicTV2 ай бұрын
You're right about labels holding a lot of power, but it's not all marketing magic. While labels do have huge resources for promotion, not every indie artist experiences a drop-off in popularity when they go independent. Artists like Chance the Rapper and Russ have proven you can make it big without a label if you're strategic and have a strong fan base. It’s definitely harder without that marketing machine, but with the right moves, artists can still build successful careers on their own terms.
