LAZARUS ENMITY'S EDGE - NON-SPOILER REVIEW

Hey everyone Rho here! Today I review the Warhammer 40,000 novel "Lazarus: Enmity's Edge" by author Gary Kloster.
As always my reviews are spoiler free so feel free to jump straight in!

I just finished the novel and yes, I quite enjoyed it. I agree with many of your points here; I think some of the highlights for me were some very fresh takes on battles - the opening fight via the orks was extremely well done in terms of fresh takes on describing the fight as the DAs had to shift at the last minute to seeing how they react when they have to bail on themselves because there is a rumour of some you-know- who being nearby. We often hear how the DAs have a nasty reputation for abandoning allies at the merest hint of a rumour - to see them do it to, well themselves, shows just how seriously they take that quest and the interaction between Azrael and Lazarus afterwards was quite interesting. Ysentrud was a great character; I had a weird feeling she was going to end up a personal servo-skull afterwards or something but I liked how she was handled. In fact there were a lot of strong characters throughout the book. The villain and threat faced was also notable; the gris reminded me a bit of the Khrave in the Lion's HH Primarch book. I mean, they were different in their makeup of course, but they weren't the standard DA villains and I was quite into them. Lastly Lazarus himself stood out - the author was successful in giving him a personality that was on the one hand, a bit like 30k Lion who was blunt, methodical, unwavering and prone to losing his sh*t when pushed (he really, REALLY hates psykers and has a sort of PTSD after his Psychic Awakening storyline). But turning him into a scholar of sorts who enjoys reading and intellectual pursuits was not something I considered from him. All in all, I don't know if we'll see a series with him, but if we did, I'd be interested in reading more of him and his company. Plus, Enmity's Edge is just a cool name for what turns out to be a pretty kick-ass sword!

While I wasn’t the biggest fan of this book(I feel like the audio version may have hurt my experience). I will say this about Lazarus: The huge fricken balls on this guy.

I loved this Novel, it really hit the part that I think can be quite forgetten, the same one one Lion Son of the forest hit, They are knights who hunt the things in the dark to protect humanity. Ysentrude and her interactions with the main characters really highlighted how easy it would be for super humans to feel disconnected from humanity but also remind them of the good. It made me think back to your Pedro Kantor videos about Rynns world and I will never forgive the Author for that ending even though it was amazing :P my only mild complaint is Azraels portrayal didn't feel great but the topic was a sensitive one especially given the timing (has to be close to Luthor being gone) but still I generally love Azrael but he was an ass here. The brotherhood aspect was awesome, Demetrius had so many great lines.

Lion would be careful backslapping respected members. He wouldn't want to have his Chapter divided again. Him killing Brother Redemptor Nemiel sparked the flame of betrayal in some of his Legionaries after all.

I agreed with your assement. A great read, I would also highly recommend it and I hope that we get more Lazarus books as the Dark Angels will likly change given the return of The Lion.

I thought it was a fun side story if you didn’t have your hopes up for the lion being in it. I think it gave a lot of backstory to a character that didn’t have much about him besides siege of fenris. My favourite chapter are the dark angels but I am not the biggest fan of every story having the fallen so this was refreshing

Got the audio version. I wasn't impressed. Might have been different pre-Lion... but now it doesn't answer burning questions I have. This novel would have been much better dropped when we still had questions about the DA adapting to Primaris.

If it’s focusing on his command squad, the only people part of the inner circle are Lazarus himself and the Interrogator Chaplain, unless we’re getting another shakeup to established lore Odd you didn’t mention Zakariah, his lieutenant, though. You’d think his second in command would make an appearance

I rather enjoyed this book on the last hour but wtf first dark angel book since the return and no lion no reference or hint I enjoyed the book especially with the hints of stop the secrets but no lion gives me the big sad

Thanks, I have been thinking about getting this book recently, especially because I just finished Lion son of the forest, so I was looking to keep reading more about the modern dark angels. Even more now that I started a DA army

I thought the writing was a little poor. The style of portraying the space marines as always spewing dogmatic lines is just very cheesy and clique.

I'll be honest this story and 'the buried beast' redeemed my view of him. He has a lot more depth then people give him credit for. I hope fans will grow to love him like they did our man Balthasar one day
