I am one of these women, I am 68 now, still working in agriculture, self employed. I don't expect this money, which is not to say it's not tough. I was payed less when I started 50 years ago simply because I am female. There is a prejudice against older women in manual work, I am fortunate to still have work and it's tough on my body now. But it's tough on all manual workers, construction is very destructive of the mainly male workforce. If it is raised to 70 people will be dying at work. I knew it was going to be changed, but you are dealing with a group who were raised in a different era when women were often expected or indeed forced to give up work when they got married or had children. So they often are on a lower wage, have a large gap in their CV, often have no college or university qualifications.

I have noticed how many of the older callers seem to be more fair-minded about this pension cut-off/kick-in issue than I expected.

Amazing how, since July, O'Brien is now a firm believer in withdrawing winter fuel allowances for pensioners, in increasing national insurance, in denying Waspi women compensation, in imposing additional taxes on farmers, and in releasing thousands of criminals half way through their sentence. Funny enough, he never put forward arguments in support any these policies before the election, but for some reason, is now in favour of all of them. In addition, he also suddenly has no problem at all with the PM and cabinet ministers accepting tens of thousands of pounds of free gifts in return for political favours, and declaring the freebies as "office equipment". Nor does he see anything wrong with apponiting a convicted fraudster to the cabinet, or with the Chancellor falsifying her CV to claim she was an economist, when she was in fact working in the Complaints Dept. Showing remarkable flexibility, O'Brien seems to have adapted his poisition on all these issues since July. How's that campaign against the "footballisation of politics" going James?

Equalising pension ages to 67 is painful for all concerned - 62 or 64 is nearer to the European average. Starting point is that we should get back to this. The 67 + retirement age is brutal for so many manual workers disabled by hard manual work and almost unemployable in any other role after their physical strength fails. The years, typically between 55 and 67, can be of impossible hardship. I am not sure about the historic reasons for womens' pension age being 60 - several years younger than her husband or partner. But 60 is an age where grandma often provided the free child care to her grandchildren or to elderly or frail parents - and she was supported to do so by early receipt of the state pension which provided an income to act as a carer (assuming also that she had paid in and not opted for the married women's contribution rate which only paid out if the marital relationship survived into retirement). Let's take a fresh look at this because supporting older people of working age over 60 to be carers for grandchildren, for elderly parents or for disabled children is worth 10x its weight in gold

Not paying the 'Waspy Women' should have been in the Labour manifesto in 2024.

More people would be more concerned about the cost of paying. Labour made the right call on this.

The changes in womens state pension entitlement age was first publicised in "1993" It was widely publicised in the media and was a regular subject on programs such as question time for years. My wife began to make adjustments to her pension contributions in 1997 in order to make up the shortfall with negligible costs. The dates were brought forward a couple of years by the Tory, lib Dem coalition, but even so there was more than enough time to make the necessary changes. I don't understand how anyone can claim that they had no idea of the relevant pension changes as everyone concerned was contacted by the DWP. If they chose to ignore that notification that is their own fault and not something deserving compensation. Lastly men have also had their pension age increased but none of them are complaining in the slightest. And we didnt get nearly thirty years notice.

@brendapeter7872 My wife and a lot of women of our age who I have asked all received letters from the DWP. Like the changes in men's pension age it was very well publicised for many years.

Why not compare the way the Japanese (another xenophobic island country) is performing based on the way it deals with its shrinking pool of native workers, immigration, automation, social security, pensions, health, etc? We could cherry-pick the best policies of each country based on the comparison.

Meanwhile the Tories and the right were screaming for 14 years, 'where is the money meant to come from??' and now they think there is a bottomless pit for Waspis and families with lots of children. The world has gone mad I tell thee! 14 years of chaos and left with the worst economic situation since the second world war and 6 months of the current lot and we are saying, bring back the chaos makers!! The current lot have said they are not in it for the shiny popularist policies and law making, they are in it for the long run of what is best to put the economy on stable footings. The population of the UK behave like kids at Christmas who have been told they may have to wait until next year for the nintendo. This is only going to get worse with every new generation of entitled fools. A grand to a waspi is not going to change their lives. no more than a part time job would after retirement, plus with that they'd get the exercise. The leader of the free world will be 78 in the new year. He'd have been drawing a pension here for 10 years if he was British. Whether he needed it or not. This is issue is not confusing.
