Woke up at 3 am, to a nurse telling me my dad had just passed. Half asleep I just couldn't put 2 and 2 together, took me a good minute to realize he was gone at 89. He was larger than life when I was a boy, as I aged I saw all the imperfections starting to show but I loved him more for it. Despite having the spirit of a fighter he was reduced to a fraction of his hulking past self by the time he passed. Life does go on, but as I grow older myself nothing is truer than The Son becomes the Father. And the Father becomes the Son.

Found out my dad passed away this morning. Nothing was wrong, he just didn't wake up. I took him to see LCD Soundsystem in 2010, it was the first time I saw him let loose and dance (to Drunk Girls I think). We shared tons of music, Sunday morning runs, afternoons reading Calvin and Hobbes together, and that won't happen again. It's gorgeous outside today, the coffee tastes the same. It's fucked to thing that despite what happened today, things will indeed just keep coming until the day it stops.

It's now 8 years since I wrote this original comment. Looking back now I do see how this song and video holds up as a testament to that time and place. The styles, the type of parties, the apartment, the reflective and emotional tone of the song. I can't speak for everyone else who was there but I know for myself I moved to this new and fascinating place not knowing anyone and with an ambition. We were out there young, alone and in pursuit of something in this urban jungle with millions of others. We depended on each other for help in the careers we were pursuing and to create new social circles. I can only speak for myself but I'm sure many us found "someone great."

From the lyrics alone, I felt that the song was about losing his wife in childbirth. That tragic and beautiful interpretation is what I want to keep in my mind. "You're smaller than my wife imagined."
@loljustice318 жыл бұрын
Ujjwal Das Gupta It wouldn't make sense for it to be about losing his wife in childbirth. When you say you think he was speaking to the baby when he says "you're smaller than my wife imagined," that would require for the "you" in the entire rest of the song to be directed at the baby, but it it's clearly directed at an adult (whom according to you is probably the wife). The speaker doesn't change who "you" is throughout the lyrics. Anyway, in general your interpretation sounds to me more like the sort of drama that women like to create angsty stories about (if any story is ever about women, then it's about their bodies in some way, pregnancy, babies, rape, victimization, childbirth, or something like that). As a woman I'm just so disappointed that women always seem to have these sorts of fantasies that only serve to cement all the stereotypes about women in society: a woman is supposedly always important first and foremost for her body, and specifically her role as a sex object or baby factory. You don't get to put yourself in that role and then cry about the way society perceives us as a gender.
@AxiomaticArt8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my interpretation does require two different contexts for the word "you", but that's how I naturally heard the song :) I guess that is the thing about good art, it can mean different things to different people.

I love the repetition in the song, the way "And it keeps coming" and "When someone great is gone" reflects our thoughts at the time of a loss is really well done. Then take some bottles of water and healthy snacks, go to bed, and stay there until we feel like getting up. That day will come. It is healthy and healing to ride out the storm which rages in our souls, in the brokenness of our hearts, and in the chaos of our thoughts and feelings. Peace will arrive one day. I am living proof of it.

I'm currently interning for a psychological clinic. And we recently had a deep dive into the clinic's consent forms. There was a provision there regarding client's records should the original therapist/psychologist became incapacitated in any form... This song immediately came into mind. While the clinic document was very blunt about it, this song made it (death) more real, and scary in a way. I hope that relationships/alliances, even those prematurely terminated, does not bring down but instead open up both parties to healing, growth, and transcendence.

[Verse 1] I wish that we could talk about it But there, that's the problem With someone new I could have started Too late for beginnings The little things that made me nervous Are gone in a moment I miss the way we used to argue Locked, in your basement [Verse 2] I wake up and the phone is ringing Surprised, as it's early And that should be a perfect warning That something's a problem To tell the truth I saw it coming The way you were breathing But nothing can prepare you for it The voice on the other end [Verse 3] The worst is all the lovely weather I'm stunned it's not raining The coffee isn't even bitter Because what's the difference? There's all the work that needs to be done It's late for revision There's all the time and all the planning And songs to be finished And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming 'Til the day it stops And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming 'Til the day it stops And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming 'Til the day it stops [Verse 4] I wish that we could talk about it But there, that's the problem With someone new I could have started Too late for beginnings You're smaller than my wife imagined Surprised you were human There shouldn't be this ring of silence But what are the options? When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone We're safe, for the moment Saved For the moment

I showed this song to her right before the end of our relationship. I didn't realize why she didn't like it until just coming back to it. This was us and she hated it

I wish that we could talk about it But there, that's the problem With someone new I couldn't start it Too late, for beginnings The little things that made me nervous Are gone, in a moment I miss the way we used to argue Locked, in your basement I wake up and the phone is ringing Surprised, as it's early And that should be the perfect warning That something's a problem To tell the truth I saw it coming The way you were breathing But nothing can prepare you for it The voice on the other end The worst is all the lovely weather I'm stunned, it's not raining The coffee isn't even bitter Because, what's the difference? There's all the work that needs to be done It's late, for revision There's all the time and all the planning And songs, to be finished And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming Till the day it stops And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming Till the day it stops And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming Till the day it stops I wish that we could talk about it But there, that's the problem With someone new I could have started Too late for beginnings You're smaller than my wife imagined Surprised, you were human There shouldn't be this ring of silence But what are the options? When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone We're safe, for the moment Saved for the moment
