When you see workers so tightly packed around the queen, they aren't protecting her, they are encasing her so they can increase her body temp until she dies. They "generally" do that if you still have another queen in that hive. The good news is, that if they kill her off, she has laid many eggs that they can use to create a new queen if they end up without one. Everything the workers were demonstrating towards that queen was rejection and harassment. I know this video is from 2013, so it's probably something you've long since figured out. Thanks for sharing the behavior. Wishing you continued success with your bees.

Queen bees mate with drones (big, round male bees) far from the hive. They mate once or twice and that's it. The workers you see are females, not trying to fertilize eggs as she is already fertilized if she is laying. Definitely trying to kill her, but in the big picture, probably no big deal as that usually means there's another queen in the hive. Just a waste of a queen.

Thanks. I have several friends who are LDS, but due to the semi-official nature of our interaction I've never brought up the prepping subject. Since there is such vast involvement in prepping by LDS I had presumed that there was a religious reason such as a prophecy or something. They certainly are hardworking and the best of people. Thanks, and enjoy your day.

They were killing here, since her pheromone level started to diminish or just workers have just detected that she could not lay eggs anymore. Possibly new queen was already born somewhere.

A bit of friendly advice... 1. NEVER use a hive tool to "move" bees about, particularly in close proximity to the queen like you did. It's too easy to slip and damage her. I use bare hands when working my hives and a light "pat" on the bees with your fingers will get them to move without risk to the queen and I don't get stung doing so. 2. You returned the frame to the hive when the queen was last on the outside of the side bar. Way too easy to roll her while doing so and injuring or killing her. Let her get back on the face of the frame and then return it to the hive.

That's a very noble and thoroughly respectable point of view. Famine would be unimaginable horror. In our preps we always figure we'll end up taking in some 'refugees' so we plan on twice our number. Maybe that's not enough. I think I'll take a broader view of my preps in the future. Thanks, and enjoy your day.

People on here are so MEAN. This man is new at what he is doing here but still and all he made the right decision because this is nature doing it's thing. We don't know why they are balling her but it can only be one of a few reasons. So he didn't do anytthing wrong and his last bit of advice was good advice even in light of his ignorance to the balling. Some people act like they have never made a mistake or done something foolish and so try to shame others and make them feel ' less than'. People like that should be ashamed of themselves. Small minded people with big opinions.I'm not referring to those of you that simply pointed out the truth of the situation but the ones who did so in a rude way.

She didn't survive. Another queen was already present which survived. This is how they kill a rejected queen. If you see that again, save that queen, recage her, take some brood and some more bees and split the hive. Use a marshmallow to replug the candy closure on that cage and you might get a nice bonus split out of it.

My thoughts on question 2. The ultimate goal of the LDS Church is for everyone on Earth to have lasting happiness. And few things in life are more miserable than watching children starve to death. To avoid that and other horrible possibilities, LDS are taught to prepare to provide Food and Safety for our families first, and our communities 2nd. LDSPrepper is living his religion by doing his best to help this KZbin community be more prepared.

Interesting. Looks like she was getting balled to me as well. But I suppose sometimes that is just a reaction to a mild panic when you open the hive. Certainly at three days or so, however long it took them to eat the candy, they should not be balling on her like that. It could have been a worker that came from the other hive that you transfered brood from, now trying to ball what she doesn't recognize as her new queen. Glad it all worked out. You sounded a little panicked... ;)

Some cities ban beekeeping within city limits. It's one of those laws that's almost never enforced. Bees are considered semi wild and there are laws in most states that protect the bee's right to roam. Also, bees are never agressive unless you're messing with their hive. If you get stung away from the hive it's because you stepped on or otherwise harmed the bee. Also, how does one go about proving it was your bee? Enjoy.

Bryce Rush Mason Bees are only active until late Spring. Unfortunately they are not around to pollinate the summer crops that need the honeybee, ie squash, cucumbers, etc. I speak from my experience in the PNW only. I tried mason bees and was disappointed because of the short window they are active.

+Mr Brightside They are killing her. When bees ball up, they are "vibrating" their wing muscles to produce more body heat to roast the queen to death. The reason they do this is because they sense she is an intruder, or she is sick, or not producing eggs/doing the things a healthy queen should!
