Just for context, the top spec LDV is +/- R150k than the top GWM P-Series. I can already see them exiting the south african market before GTA VI arrives. If Big Dave is reading this, I would like to propose a video. CHINESE BAKKIES FACE OFF. A comparison test including a drag race and light off road and on road tests where you guys review all the chinese bakkies.
@yissibiiyte
@yissibiiyte 5 ай бұрын
With that logic the Hilux, Ranger, D-max etc would also leave the market because they're more expensive than the P-series. South Africans clearly are not interested in value.

I was born in England, and I remember seeing many LDV vans there when I was a toddler, basically LDV is a British brand that was bought by the Chinese who have used the name since. I used to see LDV Convoys, and Pilots driving around the place, but they aren’t made in England anymore, they are made in China

We need to remembered the rules of the economy. The fewer the supply, the higher the price. In time these vans will be many, the price will be cheaper that time. It is not really competing with any bakkie. It is offering an alternative. We may regret it after 10 years when we realize that this van survived beyond the established brands. Rivals are tipping the scales at 1 million rands already. China is too far. It was not cheap to get this beauty here. Well done, incredible review.

This is a top spec bakkie from 6-8 yrs ago, not a bakkie in 2024. The pricing has adjusted but the design and spec hasn't. I had hope this was going to be a similar offering like the P-series since LDV have been in AUS for years. Oh well maybe in 3-4 yrs once they've learnt some lessons about our market and looked at their competitors.

@yissibiiyte
@yissibiiyte 5 ай бұрын
@@hopewellnzuza it earned it's title decades ago when it was actually well-priced for what it was. Nowadays it's lightyears behind the competition, yet is more expensive than them. Get into a Ranger after being in a Hilux and you feel like you've changed centuries; and they are pretty much equally priced. You cannot argue that the Hilux isn't EXTREMELY overpriced for what it is. Toyota sells on nothing but brand loyalty and the knowledge that it's customers will never even consider the competition. Toyota knows it can rob people blind and get away with it. Just look at a "new" (40-year old) LC 70-series that's more cheaply built than a Renault Kwid, yet costs R1mill.
@hopewellnzuza
@hopewellnzuza 5 ай бұрын
@@yissibiiyteI totally get you and to be fair the comparison is different as Hilux is still on an old generation platform compared to a ranger new generation there will be differences favoring the Ranger that I can agree on, but Hilux has never been quick to please with technology because technology moves on quick and interests fades fast with techy stuff in cars. Strong reliability, value holding and piece of mind is the trump card. Land cruiser is a different target market, one where all the fancy gismos isn't so much a priority, rarely you'll find Cruisers kept standard without purpose built customizations on them because reliability becomes top priority when you start injecting money customizing a Land Cruiser for individuals different needs.
@yissibiiyte
@yissibiiyte 5 ай бұрын
@@hopewellnzuza I'm not disagreeing that outdated cars like the Land Cruiser or even Hilux have their purpose. I'm just saying that they should not be the same price as brand new, tech-laden bakkies while being so much worse than them in most metrics. An outdated bakkie should be much cheaper than a new one, just look at the Mahindra Pik-up. It is old and outdated, but I have no problems with it because it is less than half the price of other bakkies. A 70-series is even more outdated than the Mahindra, yet costs 3× the price.

This is a bit disappointing presentation and I nearly tuned off, but wanted to see more and learn about the barkie features. Should have opened with what is outstanding about the car, features and engine options. Then go to the comparisons and price points. There was absolutely no reason to change the car to all wheel drive on a gravel road that even an i10 would have found to be an easy road.

This bakkie gets a thumbs down for me. When I first saw this vehicle , the price shocked me for a Chinese car that plans to compete with established brands. The growth of Havaal and Hyundai (at some point in time) shows that South Africans are price sensitive and as a car manufacturer you need to be careful with your pricing. The big German brands like BMW and Mercedes are starting to struggle because of the same fact.

It's funny watching this from the UK. Mitsubishi has completely pulled out of the market here, Isuzu's are a far rarer site on the roads, the Hilux is a lot less common place and the Ranger is WAY more popular. I've only seen one of these and it was electric (don't think they sell the diesel one here, especially given how much it has fallen out of favour ). Overall, vans here WAY outsell Bakkies.
