Gotta use a lot of different nodes for a lot of different materials! I actually try and make it a habit that I use a new node in each of the materials I make, so that I can find out what it can do. That's really all learning the software is. You learn what combination of nodes works to make a certain thing. :)

Another great tutorial! Thanks. You're really good at breaking down the process. One question, though: Do you have a video about how to figure out what nodes to use? It's one thing to know what shapes go into a material, it's something else to know you need to skew, mirror, and directional warp a beveled stripe node to get that shape. Seems to be the steepest part of the SD learning curve.
@GetLearnt5 жыл бұрын
Thanks friend! And I'm glad you've asked. I've recently looked into starting a new series about learning what each specific node does and some use cases for them. Very short, concise tuts. Unfortunately I dont have any of those out right now, but trust that I'm working on it! :)
@luciomagno61955 жыл бұрын
okay but how to create that random leaf tile you made in the end?
@GetLearnt5 жыл бұрын
I used the exact same process to make a few variations of the leaf shape, plugging those variations into a Multi Switch Greyscale node to switch between the shapes. There's nothing really too different than what is shown here, however I did expose the parameters on the Switch node to allow me to alternate between the shapes. You can take a look at exposing parameters in the link below if you're not too familiar: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5qqkoZtpLx6fas

I could be misunderstanding her question, however I think she's asking about in your video "Customizing Your Library | Adding Custom Nodes in your Library" and "Cobblestone Material | Beginner Substance Designer Material" you have an option under your instance parameters to change the leaf type. So I'm understanding how you brought in your custom node, but it looks like there were more steps after the leaf generator video ends to add these leaf types? I'm pretty new to SD so I might have missed something, but with following along this tutorial it doesn't show how to make those different leaf types, right? Edit: I think you answer my question in your cobblestone comment to someone, you just add a lot more to the final product off camera because it takes a while? That makes sense! However, is there any tutorial you could possible make or point me in the right direction to find how to do it? If you are too busy I completely understand.
@GetLearnt6 жыл бұрын
Ah, I see what you're saying! Like you said, for all of my tutorials there is a bit of "off-camera" stuff that I do that I don't show in the videos, only because it redundant information. If I feel I have taught a method well enough, I will normally leave it up to the viewer to extrapolate that knowledge when trying to further their understanding of the software. As much as I want to be able to show you guys around the software, I also want people to do some self exploration with the ideas being taught so that they can cement that knowledge through teaching themselves. So to have a short answer to a long response, I don't actually show how to make the various leaf types in the video. HOWEVER, you can download the file I made (totally free, no sign up or anything required) in the link below, and take a look at the raw graph that I made for this video, with the "off-camera" stuff in there as well. :D www.patreon.com/posts/leaf-generator-20381476 Thank you for taking the time to comment on the video, I really appreciate it! I've just replicated the tutorial and I can't seem to find any issue with it! As for alternatives, you'd also be able to play around with shape nodes, blending them together to try and recreate the shape, you could make an image outside of SD using Photoshop or something and bring it in as a Bitmap node, or even just forget the Shape Extrude node altogether and try using any combination of nodes to make a stem a different way. Hi, i would also like to know if the final sbs file created here can be used in blender for trees i have created using the sapling addon
@GetLearnt6 жыл бұрын
The .sbs file itself cannot be. You would have to export the maps you'd like to use for the leaf material, map those out onto a plane and then you'd be able to make the most out of these leaves. A little bit more of a process, but ti shouldn't be too tough.
@StoicVagrant6 жыл бұрын
@@GetLearnt I don't have the slightest clue on how to do that. Any clarity would be much appreciated. A link showing that process or anything. Thanks again.
@GetLearnt6 жыл бұрын
For sure, man. If you right click on the graph you are using in your Explorer tab, you can go down to "Export outputs as bitmaps" or something like that. You'll be able to select your output nodes to be saved out as PNGs which you can then use in Blender. As far as the sapling addon, I really haven't used it too much but as long as you have your leaf material saved out in images, you will likely be off to a good start when looking up sapling tutorials on KZbin. :)

@GetLearnt6 жыл бұрын
Good question! That's likely because you are viewing your nodes in "Compact Material" view. If you look up in the toolbar of your graph, you should see a tab that looks like a connection line (in your case it should probably be a green line). Click that and hit single input (or whatver the single one is) and it should show up. Alternatively, if you hit "1" on your keyboard it should switch it. :)

@GetLearnt6 жыл бұрын
Hey Sandeep, what version of Substance Designer do you have? If your version is a little too old, (I don't know exactly when that node was introduced) you can simply go to their site and update your license, assuming you still have a years maintenance subscription or student license. If you don't want to do that, you could also try your luck at using a Transformation 2D node instead. :)
@StoicVagrant6 жыл бұрын
@@GetLearnt I must be using the latest version. I bought the indie licence only last month. Anyway, I'll try using the transformation 2d node. Thanks for your reply.

Hi! I have a question, does this tutorial still work and is is also possible to create a generator that will make 1 leave where you can control all the parameters on that 1 leave?
@GetLearnt2 жыл бұрын
I can't foresee this tutorial not working in 2022, unless there are nodes that have been deprecated in the most recent version. If there are nodes that no longer exist, there will likely be some type of equivalent so you should still be able to follow along regardless. As for the second part of the question, it will depend on how you structure your graph but the goal of this node is to have it be a quick tool to generate leaf shapes, so you should be able to get what you are looking for.
