LVO 2024 brought us some of the most unique lists I have ever seen! Do we have a new meta taking shape?

I'm really surprised to see that the often lauded Sagitaur Spam did not make a deep run. Looks like all of us who couldn't buy 100 out of stock sagitaurs have been vindicated!

Great analysis as always. For the first list: The E champ and Kahl def lead the 10 man and 5 man squads respectively. You can tell because of their crests. E Champ grants the 10 man teleport whose Sergeant is running a weavefield, while the kahl with his rampart runs with the 5 man whose Sergeant is running teleport. I concur that it gives the player flexibility to either start the 5 man in reserves and deepstrike in or start in the hekaton. Starting in the hekaton let's the kahl gain one extra turn of judging what he sees in the command stage vs waiting to deepstrike on turn 2 but deepstriking makes him an extra threat from off the board in addition to the 10 man. For the thunderkyn: I concur as well that with the overload it's one of those: when it works you sweep, but if it doesn't you are really screwed. I think we saw that in action when 5th place ended up losing out because it just wasn't enough and you're really hurt by the lack of mobility and the opponent can just ignore the covered area provided by the thunderkynn unless you are able to immediately place them in a threating zone or objective by turn 2 that the opponent needs to answer. 3 lists in the top 16 out of hundreds at LVO is a pretty amazing showing for a half released army. Can't wait until we get the rest of the models and codex. EOY 2024?

Thanks Kaiser, excellent write up! You’re absolutely correct about the echamp vs khal for leaders here. Such a cool design choice to have the flexibility in hekaton vs deepstrike deployment. I do wonder which matchups warrant one or the other. 100% agree regarding the thunderkyn, it really seems like you need to fully commit to overloading your opponent with these guys to get the most out of them, and a very good observation drawn regarding list three reinforcing that theory! I think we’re looking at a late 2024 release but this helps make me confident that there are still interesting ways to keep our list making fresh. Definitely buying some more thunderkyn though that’s for sure ;)

@@VotannVersus40K It depends on whether I needed to kill easier screens, 1 W models (Kahl w/5 HG), or 2W and/or vehicles (3 Thunderkyn). Most games I chose to Deepstrike the Kahl and HG combo. The missiles on the Sagitaur helped with any range issues. 36" on a DMG 3 weapon helped finish vehicles or heavy infantry.

Just a thought as well about the thunderkyn…if they have an iron master with them they get +1 to hit, which means against vehicles they are hitting on 3s and wounding on 2s which means if you have two squads you can reliably kill vehicles without putting judgement tokens on the enemy vehicles. That means all judgements are put on squads of troops instead of vehicles. I tested this in a game recently and didn’t see the combo till I played it

Oh yeah absolutely, it really seems like these guys work best when you ensure they’re set up for success by fully taking advantage of all our ways to buff them. That’s awesome to hear that they’ve been putting in work for you. Have you tried running any enhancements on the iron master accompanying them? I’m kinda curious to see how a long list might interact just to help make any other lone thunderkyn squads maintain efficiency

For list 2, the other thing you can do is chuck 5 man troops with all the goodies in a hekaton being lead by the grimnyr, they suddenly get t6, twin linked big guns and 4 4++ invulns in an 8 man squad, with FNPs. It's tougher than it looks.

That’s a really interesting idea that I hadn’t considered. You get some decent staying power if you want to put something cheap but annoying to shift on an objective

I think you are underestimating the beamers, the difference from paper to board is stark, yes you can whiff hard but you will normally make up your missed shots and add a good amount

That’s a fair point honestly. On average for a squad of 6 you can expect them to put out 10 shots at d3. I think one of my concerns is the inability to interact with cover for a slow unit that can’t reposition, but maybe this squad should not start in reserves and instead begin on the table, ready to point down a firing lane? They are definitely a unit I am really interested in trying out a little bit more, once I pick up the additional models

Hello, a very good video. I like how you analyze the meta and the lists. I'm going directly to the end, to the topic of using fewer sagittaurs, at least one bezeker and many thunderkin. I believe that the next step in the evolution of the votenn lists is the massive use of hekatons, let me explain: it is worth about two sagittaurs (with the expected increase in points), gaining in my opinion a good amount of fire support but with the added to remove the cover, repeat to wound the unit that we put inside with shots and shoot the same unit that the hekaton has hit in that phase. And good resistance and saves, a heeled hekaton having cover and with void armor saves on a 2+ against fp2 weapons. In my current lists I don't go out without at least 2 of them, either loaded with thunderkin or hearthguard units with champion. As you mention in the video, the Thunderkin unit is very good if you use it at 6 with Iron Master, since it compensates for its lack of fp cpn saturation. Thanks Zergio for the kind words! I’ve also been having some good success with running land forts 2x. I think they’re really effective units with the conversion Beamer and having ignore cover is absolutely massive on such a shooting platform. I’ve always been storing 5x heart guard inside but I think I might try moving away from that and utilizing a unit of 10 while keep the land forts empty. Do you usually run anything inside them?

@@VotannVersus40K Hello good. Well, it depends on what the metagame looks like. If it is a metagame of many vehicles, a unit of thunderkins with gravitons inside a hekaton offers us saturation to the tanks (unless they save the 2+, which will cost us much more) or a good saturation against light units and even units of necron specters. If what you see that hurts you the most are monster units like c'tans or similar, I have verified that a hearthguard unit with a champion inside a hekaton that allows them to repeat their shooting weapons when disembarking from it is very efficient against them. I advise you that if you want a balanced list you play combinations of both. If you do not have thunderkins that come from reserves, it is very good to take them in the hekaton. The 10 hearthguard unit with khâl managed to kill 2 c'tans on the same turn in the last tournament I attended. I have a team tournament coming up and I'm trying to put together a roster that can carry the units described above. All the best
