They're not always so easy to get off. Some are dented or there's a break off set screw intended to prevent someone from removing the back-flow preventer. A lot of these back-flow preventers are made cheaply, and you'll have to change them in about 5 years.

What do they do? What’s the purpose?

I’ve got the same vacuum breaker I installed it perfectly It’s working fine without any leaks. I connected the 100f hose to it but there’s a problem : when I shut off the valve , vacuum breaker backs flow the remaining water in the hose . Is that the normal operation or not ?

Do you need plumber's tape before installing the new breaker?????

I have a hose with brass fittings that I connected up to a brass on off valve. Now I'm a female pushing 70 with very strong hands and I only hand tightened this a couple years ago, but for the love of God, I cannot untighten it. I have tried two pairs of pliers, but that has not worked. I have not tried WD-40 on it yet because I ran out. It has been outside in the extreme desert heat of 120° F.
