This is an extremely powerful concept that Toyota created and is a core pillar of “The Toyota Way”. It’s not a system or a 5 step program but a way of working.
There are a few people that I believe have a good handle on this topic: Mike Rother, Jeffrey Liker & Bob Emiliani. I recommend reviewing what they’ve said on this topic.
Toyota explain it using 2 components: Respect, Teamwork.
I’ve found it becomes clear when studying problem solving and I’d like to share 6 tips to help explain how this works.
1.Prioritise problem solving. Make this part of everyday life not a bolt on approach.
2.Be responsive. When a team member identifies a problem and calls for help, respond immediately.
3.Respectfully challenge their theory that’s based on the evidence.
4.If then the operator has settled on root cause then empower them to come up with the solution.
5.Allow the operator to apply or facilitate the solution.
6.Have the team member check the result, since they’ve implemented the solution.
While I’ve been living this for a number of years, I’m still only at the beginning of the journey, it does take time.
I’m sure you’ll find this very helpful.
