So I like how you casually drop huge loads of information in a little over 9 minute video. I like your channel because I want to learn to play guitar not just learn to play songs. I like learning how everything works and why it fits. And I can go back and play the lessons until it sticks in my middle aged dad brain. Middle age dad brain.. I’m well on the way these days Jeremy! That’s really great to get that feedback, it’s a constant struggle to get the right balance but this video felt really damn good. Funny thing is I had no plan when I started making it.. I just hit record and thought.. ok, 10 chords let’s go! I’m really passionate about knowing how this stuff works and coming from a jazz background its not so complex in this format, so I hope it comes out nice and clear! I’ll definitely make more concept based content and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Great video, Adrian! Contra your voiced concern about getting too down into the weeds, I think you do a great job of jumping right to the part we're interested in learning. This is actually a pretty rare skill (I've had a few music teachers and the sense I get, in retrospect, is that the student thinks there's going to be this across-the-board How To Play knowledge that will be imparted, while the teacher is kind of mentally thrashing around going, Okay, what is going to hold this kid's attention/how do I curate the various stuff I know into stuff that will be relevant to this particular student.) You're killin' it here!

@@AdrianWhyte Well, when we're talking specifically about rockabilly chords... a lot of us (well, I am, been playing three years now) are kind of coming into this like "Okay, I can tell the song I'm trying to play is a 1-4-5 in A and I know those three major (or minor) chords but it just doesn't sound right the way I'm doing it, and I know it's probably because it's not supposed to be straight major/minor chords." Some of us might even go down the whole wrong rabbit hole, thinking that what's missing is the right pedal or we've got the semi-hollow Gretsch instead of the hollow. But most of us (probably?) know on some level that it's probably some kind of arcane extended or jazz chord (for us less-advanced players, that whole realm gets all murked together) and we don't know where to start looking to figure out what it is. The thing we're trying to avoid is sounding like (with apologies to any local amateur bar bands) the local amateur bar band that plays some old standard with regular cowboy chords and it sounds okay but.... just don't sound right! So, specifically in this instance, what your video filled in was this info gap between "Yeah, we know what a 1-4-5 progression is and we know the basic chords that go in there" and the "Oh, it's that ninth or that thirteenth that makes it sound like Cliff Gallup!" or whatever. Had we tried to figure it out on our own, we would have had to dive into a book full of half-diminished and augmented eleventieth with flat sixths (I made that last one up) and it would be really hard because they're all so physically challenging to do, we wouldn't easily be able to just try each one and go, "Hmm, nope, that's not it." And the way you're teaching it, it takes ten minutes to explain what we otherwise would go down a lot of blind alleys trying to find. I dunno, does that make sense?

But more generally to your question, what brings us to your channel specifically is that you really fill in well that gap between "across-the-board, all-genres guitar playing" rules that we can and do pick up all over the place, and the stuff that specifically makes it sound rockabilly. Chords, yes, but also things like Travis picking, how Scotty Moore does this, how Carl Perkins did that, what gear matters/doesn't matter, etc. And also, because of your jazz chops, the jazz-dipped stuff that we Setzer freaks want to be able to do.

Great lesson. Is that guitar a Gretsch 6129t 57 as it looks like it’s got De Armond style pickups. Being a big Billy Zoom fan I’ve always wanted a Silver Sparkle with those early single coils I believe Gretsch use Seymour Duncan Dynasonics. The nearest I’ve got so far was a De Armond M75t in champagne sparkle it’s got genuine De Armond pickups although they are re issues but they have so much clarity. Cheers

Hey man! Thank you so much! Yeah this is a 6128 - 57, they are standard Gretsch dynasonics, Seymour Duncan’s are reserved for the custom shop models I believe. Yeah those dearmonds are cool too man!

Hi, Adrian. Thanks so much for this superb lesson, and for being so generous with the free charts-- enormously helpful! May I ask a question?-- I have yet to play a decent 9th chord-- the D9, for example. I fret the A string at the 5th fret with my middle finger to get the D note, but I can't do it without that same finger muting the 4th string (= the D string). As a workaround, I only play the middle 4 strings and try not to hit the open high E string. Thoughts? Suggestions?-- thanks!

Hi Mark, firstly - it’s ok to play the chord that way, but if you do want the first string involved try different combinations of your third finger and pinky across the G B and E strings. Also experiment with your second finger grabbing closer to the sixth string, even placing the tip between the 6th and 5th and levering the finger downwards onto the 5th string. Another option is bending the upper knuckle on your second finger a little more by rolling your wrist around slightly more pulling your thumb towards the ground slightly more, and finally experiment with how you place your first finger as this can dictate your hand position. You can use slightly more padding of your finger because it’s behind all the other notes anyway. Hopefully something in there helps!

I'm just starting to grapple with the idea that you can have chords that don't include a root note...in fact, it still freaks me out a bit! For example, I would have called those flat 9 chords diminished chords (as you sort of implied at one point)...I suppose it's all about context, though.

Flat 9/diminished is totally plausible and correct, although a 7b9 can include the root note where as a diminished chord wouldn’t include the root note of the 7b9 chord, does that make any sense? Thanks for your contribution man, feel free to ask if you have any other thoughts or questions!
