Even as the native English speaker as I am, particularly of the American variety of dialects and word usages, I want to expand my color vocabulary. I notice these subtle nuances better than most men, I just don't have the vocabulary set up to accurately describe what I see. Typically woman show better color perception than us men but I find myself to be an outlier in this regard.

Thanks very much, Emma. I would like to point out that it’s really important that not only the speaker knows these specifics of different shades of colours, but also the receiver of the information. Sometimes it happens that even native speakers are not sure about those subtle differences between turquoise and aqua for example. : )

No new colors here for me, but I did pick up a new pronunciation or two. Most people I know say "mauve" differently, with an initial "aw" sound rather than a long o, but your pronunciation is more correct. Here in the US, Auburn is the name of a southeastern university and turquoise is a gemstone found largely in the southwest. A few colors with interesting shades and names that didn't make the cut: maroon, cyan, and ecru.

Ooh, thanks for the background info. I had a tough time deciding which colours to leave out. And pronouncing mauve is tricky! It just doesn't "look" like a long o sound.

@@mmmEnglish_Emma I looked it up. A Cambridge Dictionary website listed your pronunciation as UK (!) and the other as US. The UK version is essentially identical to the original French, but I guess a dictionary entry means the US version is acceptable. The US version is probably borrowing the pronunciation of "au" from words like "fault" and "caught" rather than "faux."

Hello Emma! Sure, I enjoyed this lesson! Especially because I often have discussions with my husband about colors: we seldom agree with their names - even in French: we are French, French is our native language. I think it’s because we don’t have the same way to actually see the colors. Do you know that beige is exactly the same color and the same word, and also the same pronunciation, in French? And that the word burgundy comes from our wines of Bourgogne, vins de Bourgogne? For that color, we use the word “bordeaux” in French: Bordeaux is the main town of the region “bordelaise”, in the SW of France, where very good wines are from. NB: the name “Bourgogne” comes from an old nation of Gallic who lived there: the Burgondes. Thank you for your lessons, Emma! Have a good week!
