The Grandeur of Summer was originally a one hour special and a Bob Ross Painting EVERYONE Should Paint. Have fun practicing those fluffy clouds, soft as a whisper and breaking paint on the mountain. I've included as many hints and tips as possible based on 20+ years teaching as a certified Bob Ross Instructor. Happy Painting People 😄😄

Many thanks. I used to have a big palette and a mess to match! So I down sized and got a little more disciplined. My disposable paper palettes are actually Reynolds freezer paper. Cheap as chips and exactly the same stuff as the expensive pads sold in art stores. There's a link to it in the description of the videos. More new videos to come so hope to see you at the next one. 🤗

Wow great tips and what an amazing painting! I seem to have a problem when doing shadows for trees and such. The paint doesn’t seem to come off very easy, in which I have to push harder. But then color doesn’t stay as dark. I have good application of liquid white judging by finger test. It seems I have to use a lot of paint for shadows. Yours seems to come off brush easily. What am I doing wrong?
@PaulRansonArt2 жыл бұрын
Hi Byron - thanks for the super comments. The challenge with paint not sticking is down to the consistency or thickness of the paint. Even slightly too much liquid white can make getting the shadows to stick almost impossible. Next check the shadow colour is a nice 'dry' mix. Sometimes the paints used in the dark mix can be a bit too oily straight out of the tube ( have you see my paint run sometimes yep too wet straight from the tube) Soak up the oil with a little paper towel. Keep practicing and you'll get there. 😃😃

@stevenverbocht39218 ай бұрын
Hi Paul , thanks for this amazing video. Is the gray acrylic paint (before you apply liquid white) just plain acrylic paint that we can buy in every paintershop or hobby shop? or is it something special? Thanks for being such a nice person!!
@PaulRansonArt8 ай бұрын
Hi Steven - I see you've left a few lovely comments on my videos. I'll drop a Thank you on them all but use this one to answer a few questions. The grey background I paint on is a gesso. Its a water based primer that dries matt and seals the canvas. Very important when painting with oils as we want then to stay oily and workable. Gesso is very similar to grey acrylic. Again its a water mixable paint but genegally dries with a sheen. I use both on my canvases so they are for the most part interchangeable. The grey surface also tones the canvas - you'll find painting on a pure white canvas has its drawbacks. Like making a white fluffy cloud show up on a brilliant white background. Or when Phthalos blue looks almost fluorescent because the white acts like a mirror. And yes, it helps when applying liquid white. The canvas should have a feint grey tint if you apply it thinly. Perfectionism is a challenge. Just don't play golf ... you'll be in therapy after the first hole! I never use a 'just washed brush' on my paintings. I have a few clean dry ones if I need them. p.s. Bob had a stack of brushes and would usually beat the devil out of one and more often than not slip the damp one to the side and pick up a dry one. But thats our secret so keep it to yourself .... I dry clean only until its time for a new dry brush. Hope that covers it all - Happy painting - Paul 😃😎

I can’t get over how thick oil paint is. 😱. I just started painting this today (my very first oil painting). My trouble right from the start, my white clouds have turned blue. I think I may be using too much paint. What type of palette are you using? Thank you for this video.
@PaulRansonArt2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sall - Beginners are often taken a back by how much body oil paint has especially if you've been using water colour. Classic problem with blue clouds is usually too much liquid white ( if your doing the Bob Ross technique). This makes the blue thin and oily and it sticks to the stiffer Titanium White. This ends in a little frustration and voila - blue clouds. Watch my video all about this. It should help you paint better clouds kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJ-apZ1qnLuCZqM - watch the section at 4:49 where I paint blue clouds. 😀😀

How come you don't paint on actual canvasess but on lining paper . I might do this when I'm practising . Also do they dry the same or crack or anything ? Cheers .
@PaulRansonArt2 жыл бұрын
Great question Steve. Its a matter of storage and cost. Once dry the paper takes up almost no space and its super economical too. Great for practice. I've looked back at paintings 10+ years old and they look exactly the same as the day I painted them. BUT if I wanted a special painting or a commission I always use a canvas.

Hi Mary, I'm using a wallpaper lining paper (heavy weight) with a couple of coats of gesso to seal it up. I've been using this as a practice 'canvas' for years. I also have some texture embossed wallpaper which looks just like a canvas. Again a coupe of coats of gesso and its good to go. 😋😋
