I love the way you teach magic. IMHO, knowing how a trick is done doesn't take away from the magic - it helps you appreciate the art of the magician. I love trying to figure out how a trick is done - not to "catch" the artist when he/she "messes up," but to imagine and discern how the effect might have been achieved after seeing it masterfully performed.

My Gosh: Camp Sankey - EVERYTHING is here. And no non-magician is going to take the time to learn this or any other. I perform over 100 shows a year and it is soooo rare someone says they saw a trick on KZbin etc. And when they do, I say "Good you saw a trick but does that make you a magician? No? We are entertainers so relax and enjoy the show" :)

I think what you're doing in these videos is great. I'm not even an amateur magician, but I do like to see how things work. Yes, one doesn't perform a trick, and right afterwards show the audience how one did it. But many people think these are just "cheap tricks," or dismiss "sleight of hand" as a triviality. These videos show the level of virtuosity involved in acquiring the skills necessary to do this, not to mention the insight needed to invent them. I only wish that after you explain how you do the trick, you would demonstrate it again at the end, since there's that much more appreciation afterwards, not less.

I remember this from your Sankey Very Much DVD, Seeing the Revolution Count during the routine was just mesmerizing and for me it opened up so many doors leading to other card tricks. I love how one can take an idea or sleight and add it to another effect to better or even change the outcome. That's what i like about Magic best of all, it's like cooking. We have an arsenal of ingredients or sleights in this case which we can throw into a big pot mix them up with good ideas, the right timing and with a little trial and error the possibilities for new material is endless however, I digress. in answer to the above question I would have to say no but it would be cool as hell though.

Your point about having the two jokers facing the same way that you make early on is important for a couple of reasons. Thematically it works well with the humorous business of the two jokers "listening" to the spectator's thoughts when placed near the spectator's ears and also with the implication that the two jokers are "talking" to each other as they work together to trap the selected card within the deck, and in effect it also makes them look a little bit like guards on both sides of a "prisoner." Technically it also helps support the later counts in the second part of the trick, when you apparently turn face up one joker, then the other joker. When this false count is done, by necessity the "two" jokers will face the same direction. This has been subtly established already because the spectators have always seen them this way, with heads in same orientation. So the count looks natural. If you allowed the spectator to view the pair of jokers earlier in opposite orientations, this could lead the spectator to expect the two different jokers to appear that way during the later counts, and when that does not occur, it might weaken the believability of the false count, even if spectators don't really sense they are seeing just two not three cards. I don't know if I conveyed precisely what I mean above. Just wanted to add to your comment that described it as a small nicety you've been in the habit of doing. It has a significant latent effect that helps sell the later counts just before the tent vanish.

The answer: No someone does not have "REAL" psychic powers, but what's important is the fact that you can make people "THINK" someone (Jay) has psychic powers. That's where the "power" comes from. Jay this is a GREAT routine. This is the one I think I will study, and study. Not only are the tricks most effective, but you always have a story to get the audience to take ownership in it. I believe that some people-magicians in particular- have learned the technique of human behavior and used it to their advantage to add some wonder in people's lives. There are subtle ways people don't realize how they act and "professional" trained entertainers can pick up on their vibes. In that's sense, yes I believe you can read people's minds.

Nice one. Love the fact, that it is pure sleight of hand, starting with 54 cards and ending with 54 cards. Besides... The magic books "of yesterday" are todays youtube videos. Magicians of all times have given their knowledge away to those, who whanna leran.

Thank you, Jay. I enjoy your videos a lot! Let me make a couple of comments. For me knowing how a trick is done doesn't ruin it for me. I recall being in a magic shop as a young adult and there was a kid there with his mom asking about a good starter trick. The owner was showing him the two card monte (one double-faced card and one double backed card) that is in every beginner magic set on the face of the planet. The owner performed the trick for the kid using me as the audience/victim. Knowing the secret I thought (this should be good (sarcastically) and it WAS! It was very good. The performance was everything. Secondly, although you are teaching 'tricks' you, more importantly, teaching 'techniques' the building blocks for tricks and performance ways to approach the same techniques from different perspectives. With this info, we can create our own tricks and effects. I have done exactly that. I'll look at a trick and say I am bad at a certain part of it and figure out a different way to do it or an alternative presentation that hides the problem. Thanks again Jay for everything.

That was a good one! So much slight of hand... Will take some practice :) As a bartender, your lessons have really helped me entertain and connect with my customers... Love hearing your afterthoughts too... Digs into the psychology behind magic which crosses over into the psychology of bartending, interacting with people, behavior study, and so on... On that note, any REAL psychics out there? Not necessarily, but if one can read people to the extent of "knowing" what the other is thinking, or read patterns in life all around us... That can definitely seem psychic! I rambled... Thanks Sankey!
