Hi :) You're absolutely right. Kamusta is derived from the Spanish como esta. :) There are still a number of words in Filipino that were derived from the Spanish language such as estasyon for station, libro for book, etc. Salamat! Yes it is because we were colonized by Spain. Did you know that our country was named after a King of Spain? It was King Phillip II of the 15th century. He was called King Felipe / Haring Pilipe ..Later on our archipelago was called Filipinas / Pilipinas, giving birth to the international name Philippines. :)

Good lesson. What she mentioned very quickly in passing at the end is very important: If the person you're talking with is older than you, or has a higher rank than you, you should add "po" (or other terms of respect) to nearly every sentence. Did you know that "kumusta" evolved from the Spanish "como esta" (how are you)?

Wow. I wanted to learn a couple of phrases to surprise a new acquaintance, and your teaching technique is super easy to follow. I have dabbled in a few languages, and the info you give is how I approach it. "This phrase literally means this..." Love it. That's the way to see the mind of the source. Say the phrase the way it sounds in conversation, followed with "Pro nounce ing each syl la ble," and then the phrase like a native again. Easy to hear and remember. Two thumbs and 1 big toe up.

For those who noticed she put the “po” before “ako”, do not write po anywhere in a sentence. It is used to show respect and kindness when talking to a person or if their older. Another way to say it is “opo” with the same meaning but just agreeing. Po is like asking permission or asking politely. (Or confirming) Example: Po - Sige Po, Aalis na po kami Opo - Person: Pupunta ka ba diyan? You: Opo. So, I hope you found this helpfull and thank you for reading this comment. :) (And yes, I’m a Filipino.)

I grew up in a Tagalog-speaking family but they never forced me to learn it. So now I'm at this weird place where I always know what people are saying but I can't speak the language myself. (I have an easier time constructing sentences in French!) I want to learn it better so that I can at least reply back to people whenever I visit the Philippines.

Jo Koy is actually very successful comedian. As the son of a Filipino mother, he makes a lot of jokes about Filipino stereotypes - and the Filipinos in the audience (and those of us married to them) know he’s hilarious, and not entirely inaccurate. Yes, he bombed at the Globes (but that joke about Taytay was funny, okay?), but he’s got several specials on Netflix, and there’s more to come. You go, Koy boy!

Filipino/Tagalog deserves to be a unique language that doesn't excessively correlate and/or conflict with the Espanglish Languages. Also, I absolutely love certain Modern Baybayin Charts that i've found in images online, since it adds symbols for it's writing-systems that splits both e-i and o-u vowels, not to mention important consonants such as Ñ, L, B, K, Ch, and much more miscellaneous etcetera consonant examples, such as splitting the D-R consonants. If Baybayin's writing-system ever gets officially revived (at least as an optional text), I hope it'll happen ONLY IF they use that Modern Version coined by modernbaybayin's blogspot! I also dislike how several cartoons that are dubbed in Tagalog/Filipino carry-out most of their english names in characters & places instead of translating them to sound much more Tagalog/Filipino than they already do, since the English-Language was never meant to overrule the Philippines in the first-place. I officially rest my case, now.

I love how you teach! Edit: Sorry this post turned out a little long. I love how you tell us what the word or phrase literally means then how it is used. It really holds back in the Korean 한국말 - 한국어 lessons when they only tell us things like: 안녕하세요 (an-yang-ha-se-yo) "Hello", but it doesn't! What it really means is: 안녕하세요 (an-nyang-ha-se-yo) "awn-nyawng-hah-seh-yoh" = "peace do" in a respectful way. 안녕 (an-nyong) "awn-yawng" = peace. 하세 (ha-se) "hah-seh" = do. Or to do. 요 (yo) "yoh" = shows respect. So 안녕하세요 actually means ""peace do" in a respectful way and in Korean since I am talking to YOU the words "I" and "you" are assumed and left out. The word gives the idea of "I intend to act peacefully towards you and I'm showing respect.". It is the most common formal greeting used in South Korea. There now, in that one little example I gave nearly complete excellent deep understanding of the Korean word "안녕하세요". Now why can't all language lessons work like that so we become more perfect foreign language speakers? Your lesson here is like that. Very nice! When I have completed and perfected my Korean I will use these things I have experienced and realized to provide learners with the greatest teaching system around and help as many as possible! Thank you for this well done lesson! 👍🏻 Hope this helps. Much love to you all!
