Hope you enjoy today’s video! 💛 - Further clarification: John Cena’s sentence at 03:47 is not a wrong sentence. “如果現在我去中國,我可以說中文 / Simplified: 如果现在我去中国,我可以说中文 (So now if I go to China, I can speak Chinese.)”. Here “可以” emphasizes permission. In his sentence, “可以” would be correct because he learned Chinese and that allows him to be able to speak Chinese in China. But the sentence at 03:52 “你可以說(中文)?/ Simplified: 你可以说(中文)?” is incorrect. Usually, we say, “你會說(中文)? / Simplified: 你会说(中文)? ” “Do you speak (Chinese)?” We use “會 / Simplified: 会” in this question to ask if someone possesses a learned skill.

I find that I pronounce 有 as "yao" as well. However, I think what is really happening to us is that we are mixing up 有 and 要. They're both learned early on, and although I remember what each means, I still will mix them up when I'm anxious because they have the same starting sound.

Hello, Grace! I started learning Chinese about three years ago. Mr. Cena has a passion about learning Chinese that I would have needed, because I never came close to speaking like he can! For more or less one year, I had two teachers online. One from mainland China and one from Taiwan. A thing I find a little bit funny is that you and my former Taiwanese teacher pronounce "measure words" in exactly the same way, as "major words". That caused some confusion for me initially :D That being said, I really think your videos maintain high quality. You have a way of explaining tones, intonation and vocabulary that make me understand new things and remember forgotten lessons. This is the third video from your channel that I've been watching today, although I was getting ready to study Turkish and Korean soon 😊

Another great video Grace. However for the first point, I would say it’s not a pronunciation issue but rather just getting his words mixed up! I remember when I first started learning, I would often say 要 instead of 有 and vice versa, not because I because I couldn’t say it right, but in the moment, I say the wrong word. It’s common for none native speakers at the beginning phase to mix up words with the same beginning sound, especially ones that are likely learned around the same time. Ps when are you going to analyse my chinese? Hahahah

I loved this video, thank you. It was very informative. I also had no idea that John Cena spoke Mandarin. Wouldn't it be better to say "Pu Tong Hua" instead of Zhong Wen? If I said, "Wo hui shue Zhong Wen," could that not also refer to Cantonese as well? Thank you!
@squemish514 жыл бұрын
普通话 kind of means "common tongue", so if you're not in a Mandarin speaking country, 普通话 wouldn't actually mean Mandarin. It would mean whatever the common tongue is where the speaker is. At least that's my understanding.
@capoeira1024 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I always thought that by default, Mandarin was the “common language” because it is the most widely spoken language in China and considered to be the official language. I had no idea that it referred to the geographical residence of the speaker. So, in Guangdong the common language refers to Cantonese and in Beijing it is Mandarin, got it! Thank you.
@GraceMandarinChinese4 жыл бұрын
David G Hi! Thank you for the feedback! And about your question, indeed, “Zhong Wen” is Chinese language, so it includes Cantonese as well. But because of the population of Mandarin speakers, when you say “Zhong Wen”, in most cases, people would know you’re referring to Mandarin. And many Chinese native speakers also choose “Zhong Wen” as the term as opposed to other languages (English, French, etc.). But when you want to be very specific, in China you can say “Pu Tong Hua”, and in Taiwan, we don’t say “Pu Tong Hua”, we say “guó yǔ” :) I hope this helps!
@JamesWongLife4 жыл бұрын
In mandarin (especially taiwan) it’s more common to say 中文 rather than 普通話 to refer to mandarin. This is probably cause it’s now considered “the main Chinese language”. However, in Cantonese they refer to mandarin as 普通話 and don’t use 中文。

Interesting that we can actually learn from the mistakes of non-native speakers. However, we also need to keep in mind that they are not native speakers of Mandarin Chinese. Having said that, I find that he is already brave enough to speak the language despite the fact that he does not have the competency level of the native speakers. He will definitely get better and better each day with practice. With all languages, practice makes perfect.

Thank you for the video. I'd have get right the sentence "I can speak Chinese" in my native language we literally say "I know to speak Chinese", the first would mean permission :) it'd be great to have more videos about those common mistakes when translate from English to Chinese, I find it very difficult to translate words like: "some, any" and "to, for", because of language differences and context dependency.

Since English does have ou and au sounds like in words such as “load” and “loud”, I believe he was making a mistake in grammar rather than pronunciation, I think he was probably trying to say “If you choose to be passionate” or “If you want to have a passion” though it ended up not making sense, but that’s just my guess

I learned the true difference between hui 会 and keyi 可以 the hard way, I was talking over the phone with a Chinese friend and our connection started to get a little static so I asked 你可以听我吗?and he replied, sure 怎么了? And I was so confused. Techincally I was asking "Can you listen to me? (I have something I want to say). I then realized I should've said 你会听我吗?Meaning "Are you able to hear me?" I think a common misconception with learners is that these words can be used interchangeably, which I learned that was not actually the case and caused so much confusion xD You can bet I'll never forget the distinction between 会 and 可以 ever again
@L-mo3 жыл бұрын
You are pronouncing _major_ instead of _“measure”_ . The first vowel sound is different and the middle consonant is also different.
@squemish514 жыл бұрын
What's the difference between 能 and 会? People have told me different definitions and some say that 能 refers to skill/ability more than 会.
@chungchhen4 жыл бұрын
能 (neng, 2nd tone) means can / be able to - to do something but without any training or schooling. For example, you can eat spicy food. 会 (hui, 4nd tone) also means can but it's a skill you know from some kind of training or schooling, like can drive a car. 你现在明白了吗 ?
