All-American Alex Clemsen teaches you how to properly close the gap as a defensive wrestler. This basic, yet important, technique disrupts your opponent's ability to penetrate through his attack. That allows you to turn defense into offense.

As an old man doing grappling tournies with some jits training but no wrestling background, this was helpful beyond belief.

I’m pretty sure you can still use lead hand and defend a takedown if you see it coming or sprawl, or be able to touch him before he can touch you. The rear hand is way more telegraphed than lead hand so that club with the rear won’t do much.

You can't close the gap if you expose yourself and get taken down first.

why on laces not toes?
@frook28

Because you can slide on your laces, when he is trying to finish a shot. Your toes with the rubber traction, will make it easier for him to drive through you because your toes will be in a fixed position.

Ronin if they go to finish and pressure through you the grip on the bottom of your shoe will grip the mat so you can’t sprawl and hip down.

It usually makes your opponent drive you backwards (when they want to first pull you to them for the takedown), whereas if you're on your toes then if they drive into you while pulling you towards them your toe will plant allowing them to pull you towards while they drive in. Downside: it makes you slightly less ready to move explosively to counter than if you're on your toes (say, if you want to get heavy for a front headlock and/or spin around them). But, it isn't that big a deal since you can easily switch to your toes to go on the offense
