First thing we learned in grooming school is: mats do not equal neglect. The majority of dog owners do not have the time to brush their dogs coat every day. With maltipoos their hair texture is one that requires constant attention. We see this all the time and do not judge the dog owners, in fact we are are grateful they are bringing the dog to get the required attention rather than let the coat get even worse.

Maltipoos have fine hair. This is due to the maltese influence in the breed. Maltipoos can be curly wavy or straight all coming from the same litter. I have siblings (male and female) and their hair is quite different in texture. They require grooming with a fine tooth comb every single day without fail in order to keep the mats from forming. If you begin when they are really young, they love the attention. Make it fun and make a lot of fuss over them and they will look forward to the undivided attention. This groomer is amazing and the dog is pretty well behaved considering all the special attention involved in removing the mats. Thanks for this video. It is good to see how the grooming is done and I think that occupation deserves to be a very high paying profession.

Oh my goodness, dear, you truly have the patience of Jobe! Also very skillful. We have two Lhasas and a Shih Tzu and they need grooming regularly. Due to our oldest getting stressed at the groomers, I'm learning to do them myself and find it very rewarding. I'm loving watching this video. Even though our dogs are never allowed to get matted like that, it's all education and worth a view. A very caring lady who's just didn't give up and shave him completely down. Well done.

I am learning alot because my silky is 13 , and she gets stressed when at groomers, so I'm learning to do myself. Plus, as a senior myself, I can't afford the prices now. I realize it's alot of work, but since it's not cheap, I wait too long between cuts. She always ends up looking like a street dog, so I want to keep her groomed myself. Good video.

I give my Maltipoo a good brushing through every 2 days and she STILL gets mats. What most don't understand is how mats are formed. Mats are formed at the rate in which fur is shed and grows in. The faster the fur grows, the more is shed and gets stuck in the newly growing fur. Mats are NOT a sign of neglect. They are extremely common and can get bad quickly, depending on how fast the dog's fur grows back. You also need to understand that some people can't afford to go to a groomer often. It's been a few months since I've taken Sophie, and I haven't had the extra money to go get her cut. I'm having to do it at home due to the fact her fur is getting WAY too long. That's another thing- Mats are common in dogs that have long fur and form even quicker then. Please, keep in mind that this dog most likely wasn't neglected. There are many valid reasons the owners were unable to groom or take the dog to the groomer.

Maltipoos have hair not fur. They do not shed. That’s why they need to be groomed every 6-8 weeks. Otherwise their hair will grow and grow, not shed.

Then people need to understand before owning this type of dog if they can’t maintain it. These mats hurt these dogs!! They look ugly and need regular brushing!! They are a lot of work!! Choose your dog due to your own dedication to it!!!

My maltipoo completely freaks out with the clipper noise but I found these clippers called scaredy cut. Works great! This dog is so wonderfully calm compared to my maltipoo. I really love my bulldog. I don't care what people say about English bulldog maintenance. My maltipoo is so much more maintain. Love them both.

06/17/2020: Girlfriend, you blew me away with your patience with Zipper. You did a beautiful job and I am contemplating doing my two Maltipoos myself going forward. I've already ordered my table w/the arm and am going to buy all the other equipment pieces I need only because it's getting expensive and one of my pups is a bit frisky and has separation issues. Therefore, I'm on my way, but thank you for such a wonderful tutorial. Your soothing voice and the way you handled Zipper enabled you to do a great job. I hope its owner appreciated all that you did considering what you had to work with, with all the matting. Take care and have a good life!

Start out groomed at about 3-4 months when it’s had enough shots to be protected,. I think it’s best if you start out with a Face, Feet and Fanny. Just to introduce him/her to the groom without stressing him/her out to much. It’s important to start them out young so that they are a little less afraid. Trust is important to the dog so they need to get to know there groomer. It’s good to build a regular appointment and relationship with your groomer. Routine is important to all of us.

Poor Zipper you did a really good job I have a black maltipoo and his hair gets tangled a lot. I try to brush atty least twice a week, and I just cut the matted hair. I want to try the teddy bear cut on him. Great video, you're an awesome, caring and extremely patient.

I don't know why this video was so soothing to me. It was so relaxing I was falling asleep! lol Now I will go buy some tools and groom my Maltipoo. The only reason I'm going to try my hand at grooming her is because she's very well behaved. When I bathe her or checking for fleas, she's very still. I noticed the dog is very relaxed in large part because you do not talk really LOUD around the dog. Some groomers talk so loud while grooming it gets the dog even more reactive and resistant to being groomed.

What a great job u do at managing the dog. I doggy-sit my son's maltese x while he works & he gets v impatient when we try to cut out his frequently matted bits ... The dog's skin is sensitive, so i kinda feel restricted to brushing, rather than combing - so that could mean brushing brushing forever & ever & I'm just not well enough to do that. Do u hv any suggestions to help reduce matting? Is there a better type of brush to make brushing more effective?

Remember the blades get hot very fast. You have to switch off frequently or they burn the skin!

hi I loved this video because you gave a lot of information. This dog seemed a bit more unsure of the grooming even though you are one of the most gentle groomers. Is this what happens if you don't take them regular. My Maltipoo is only 9 weeks so should I take her regularly to get in the habit.

I can't believe how matted this dog was. Zipper appeared neglected. When was his last grooming? I hope you reached out to the owner with some concerns. He had to feel so much better. Caring for a maltipoo takes lots of grooming time....maybe 20-30 minutes a day. Their hair grows really fast.

His HAIR appeared neglected. While that is sad, he appeared otherwise well-nourished, bright, happy & good-natured ... Zipper's owner may have had an accident since his last grooming, or may like myself may have a chronic, debilitating illness, leaving them physically unable to carry out those duties for a while ... When these things happen, ppl don't just appear at ur door offering to help & if u gave up ur dog, ppl would criticise u for that too ... It's easy to be judgemental of others, kindness costs nothing ...

Sadie you just need a more experienced dog Behaviorist to groom your dog! I have been doing it for 20 years and now I do not use muzzles. I groom like Ceasar Millian, if they bite me I just keep going, so the dog knows they just have to deal with it bc I'm NOT going to stop! I have been bitten many times, but it does not stop me from grooming. Just look for a groomer that has a lot of experience with grooming 5yrs+! It is just my opinion! You do not have to do what I say, but I hope it can help you! :)

I must congratulate you on filming Zipper's grooming. He was terribly matted with long hair; shame on the owners, nice of you to take it in stride. That poor pup needed a nap after all that! You are patient and not mean to the pup at all. I hope not all your grooms are as difficult as this poor guy. MALTESE OWNERS; see what happens if you don't take care of your pups? If they're too much trouble or it's too expensive, just get them shaved down to a short cut a few times a year; easier on all that way.

Well done, and very calming attitude with the dogs. Poor little guy, so many painful mats. Owners do not realize that matted hair means its painful for the dog to walk, sit, stretch, and be groomed. Its not just neglected hair, but painful skin that occurs. Owners take note. and do not get a dog you cannot maintain with brushing.
