I train dogs professionally every day and have been for over 25 years and I respect your content. I just want to support you in that I have saved 100s of dogs from being put to sleep as well as being put in shelters/rescues by implementing punishment. Punishment is used 5 to 10% of the time but has a 75% plus efficiency in stopping the unwanted behavior. Daisy, the tan dog, had been harassing the black and white dog the entire video UNTIL you addressed it. I don't always agree with what you say but mostly, Im right there with you. So people, pay attention.

I've managed yards for years and you're spot on. This method works, new handlers try to be too soft and don't understand what they're looking at so they let problems go, dogs get hurt, relationships between dogs get ruined, there's redirection on the handler, etc. It's a fucking mess, dc groups get chaotic without this kind of no-nonsense leadership when it comes to safety. Also, I used the term "discipline" in front of a positive-only trainer years ago, they practically short-circuited. Lol

In this video, you mentioned aggression and biting a kid on the face. I can relate to that potential nightmare. I like saving dogs lives, so I like to adopt rescues. I have desensitized both of my rescue dogs around kids, people, loud noises, sudden movements, or objects. I used to take my dogs to a local off leash dog park. Unfortunately, I had bad experiences from a--holes with their dogs. My final visit was when an ugly, "Karen," started screaming at me about one of my dog's biting her kid in the face. She threatened to call the police and scooped up her crying kid. I calmly walk-up to the kid and gently turned his face side to side and saw no marks, not even a scratch. Instead of calling this Karen a liar and getting in an argument, I just put my dog on a leash and put him in my car and left. After that horrible interaction, I don't go to dog parks anymore and cautious of people around my dogs. There are people out there that want to instigate something and looking for a large payout.

You’re channel is a godsend really. I also watch upstate canine academy but without a prong collar (hard to source herm sprenger in Australia, his techniques wouldn’t work w/ big Kelpie X who has fear aggression/reactivity to ppl (used to be reactive to everything that moved - bikes, scooters, bus, car, brooms, vacuum which I fixed) just big issue w/ppl any place apart from the dog park. Your flat collar loose leash walking has worked so well with him. Now working on keeping him below his threshold with ppl coming near/inside the home. He actually did almost knock an old lady over and also got out the side gate and sprinted across the yard and jumped 1 metre down onto the road to circle and bark at a passerby. My pit bull never did crazy stuff like that when he was being protective, always calm and controlled. I’m on a big learning curve here.

Your comments are a balanced approach to what is rapidly becoming a cultural issue in Britain. I walked the highest mountain in Britain last week with my dog off lead, as always. On the way down we had issues with 5 dogs walking up. Two dogs attacked mine while they were on lead and mine walking past. One dog was on a tight lead and the owner shouted a warning to me that her dog doesn’t like other dogs. This mountain is one of Britain’s most popular walks. I would love to have said, train your dogs before you bring them in to this environment. Balance and awe ness is needed.

Mark the behaviour and apply the deterrent. I am the regulator, aka the balancer of energies. Nobody gets run over or overwhelmed on my watch. That's how I interpret your instruction. Thank you for clarifying, Joel. The subtleties of dog behaviour are the challenge for most, as most people who consider their dogs fur babies have applied human attributes to their dog and interpret the dog behaviour on those terms. It muddies the waters. A confused owner creates a confused dog. A permissive owner can also create, at the very least, an annoying dog, and at the extreme, a dangerous dog. Thank you for your clarity on what to look for - it is very helpful.

My husky mix (2.5 years old) was a rescue dog, who was given up by his elderly owners at 6 months old because he kept jumping on them. Correcting the jumping took like a week at most, but stopping the biting they didn't mention took longer. He's still mouthy but I allow that by invitation only. I really feel like they stuck him out in the back yard and never did anything with him. His big issue now is being too rowdy when he plays.(With coonhound mix puppy 12 weeks old and pit bull 3 years old) I've started clapping and yelling HEY! then walking him down to correct him and its really helped. He's so high energy though its like he loses his little doggy mind and I have to snap him out of it. I have noticed he's starting occasionally to stop after a few seconds and think so its working. :) One day he might chill out... lol who am I kidding, his nickname is Wild Longdog for a reason.

She socialise at the doggie park, and is building confidence. Now and then needs direction not to rough play with the little dogs. She doesn’t react but has been bitten by some small dogs and one in particular will harass her nipping and biting her. (She had enough one day and the owner couldn’t call his dog off her, and my dog went to chase the other dog down but thanks to all the training from your videos, she responded to my call and we left the park. We leave now when that dog comes. Do you have any ideas what’s up? As these dogs that don’t like my dog are okay with the other dogs. Thanks Rachel

I completely agree with you that this method works because you are speaking in a language that dogs understand. It’s been challenging for me to be a boss to my strong male husky, but I’m working hard to keep the balance of love and structure. I’d just love to know how to deal with his reaction(growling and some dominating behavior towards younger intact males). Some says it’s better not to let him rehearse that kind of behavior. I wonder it’s better to let him meet and correct or avoid meeting with the other intact males.

Definitely keep making the videos - always some great tips. Question - any tips for prey drive? - Have young drivey ridgeback with strong aversion to cats. ALWAYS on lead outside the yard - and he's getting pretty good at "my rules" for leash walks, but cats (and there seem to be a lot lately) are the exception - have tried your mark & punish, but particularly if cat is moving -it is a real battle just to hold him. I swear some nights it's like the cats are testing the dog's halti - and they shouldn't- no question he's strong enough to break it if he really tries ...and he's quicker and more agile than you expect...Spray of water in my dog's face has worked in past if I'm quick enough - but as he's gotten older he's become more fixated (about 2.5yrs now). Sorry for long comment - be grateful for any tips!

Yes, I’d like to see a video on managing prey drive too. I know the key is preventing the dog before it goes into full blown mode but sometimes my Rottie will spot a rabbit before I do and it’s a battle to get her out. And yes, I agree about cats. Just this week when walking my Rottie, a cat walking on the street came right up to her but was super sweet. They sniffed each other, lol, and then the cat tried to rub up next to my Rottie. I was expecting the worst like this cat had some sort of death wish but then she just took off and Rosie didn’t negatively react during the encounter, luckily.

@@dianna9283 gosh you were lucky!- Unfortunately my ridgey's first 2 cat experiences were surprise cat paw swipes (one "justified" I.e. he wasn't sure what he was sniffing and stuck his nose in a fence - had no clue cat even lived there, but 2nd was full ninja cat - stalked us and came out aggressively attacking and backed us onto a road (I would have laughed if I was watching) - ever since then he has been really suspicious of cats). I don't know if its straight prey drive or prey + fear? Like the situation you describe, the cats that present the challenge for us are just out and about on their own (sometimes hunting wildlife). We have worked on cats in their own yards (both enclosed and not) and he's much better - it's the roaming cats /on the footpath that are the issue for us. P.s I take a spray bottle of water on our walks- if you are quick enough, Dianna, it will dissuade a cat from approaching if necessary- and it doesn't hurt the cat, of course and may help prevent injury or worse.

Our Golden Retriever is an intact 2 year old. Over the last week or so he has been putting himself in between me and other dogs when I say hello/pet them but now he is having a go at the bigger ones. Most of these dogs we have got to know over time so not strangers. He was bit in the face at the beginning of the year by a dog he didn't know and we thought maybe that had something to do with this problem. Monday he went for a friend's dog while I was petting him and today a Mastiff went up to my husband for pets, but when it came up to me my dog came rushing in between us and started to have a go. I did shout and hubby got him away quickly this time and I did tell him off but I'm worried when I'm on my own as he is so strong and can't always get hold of his collar straight away. Otherwise he is a lovely dog and loves to go up to dogs and say hello. Any advise would be very appreciated.

Joel is it okay for owners with powerful breeds such as Rottweiler‘s to not have them in the backyard when hosting barbecues or parties as sometimes I get worried how will my ruler react around certain strangers and can’t always keep my ion him as busy hosting and I’m also vision impaired. I feel like if I put him on the side of the house behind the gate I am neglecting him from socialising and also putting the stigma on the Rotty breed ps he has been a little bit antisocial with strangers and nipped one

What if the aggression is too quick and spikes too fast? I tried correcting when the tunnel vision happens when a bigger dog is approaching… but as they get about 1 to 2 m close, my shiba inu starts growling aggressively. I know one of your videos you say that you need a smart calm and social dog to train with, but what are some smaller steps while being near or trying to socialize with other big dogs?

I have two boxers (male and female) and the female plays SO rough with my male. She’s much smaller (60 lbs and he’s 90 lbs) and she’s always after his neck and heels. Is this a behavior I should try to get her to stop? He just plays right along with her but sometimes I feel she’s extra rough…

The biting of the heels, while it might seem benign, in my opinion it could be dangerous if they're running around and someone nips at them. A fight can break, an injury can easily occur, etc.

He talks about resource guarding most often, in regards to how the dogs are reactive when with the owner. So on leash reactivity videos, feisty Fido etc. They say this person is mine, you can't come near them, or the dog gets triggered when owner pets another dog. The primary lesson applies to most resource guarding IMO.

What James Child says, ditto. Resource Guarding is what most all dogs are doing when people think the dogs are "protecting" them. Instead, the dogs are guarding what they regard as their assets.

Breakingup the dogs in their moment is the punisher, yelling is the marker. The one with the most pleasure in the encounter gets the biggest impact(punishment) let them cool down for a brief moment and let them reengage.

Hello, I have 2 experienced Huskies, they're friendly, well behaved (well, they're still huskies) and overall they know how to behave when other dogs are present. Now I met a new dog (pitbull), she's about 2 years old, originally from other owners that it is now and she cant stand presence of other dogs. Current owner of this pitbull is too soft and in my opinion cant make enough dominance over the dog so it seems like pitbull taking charge when they're outside. I've tried to socialize pitbull with my 2 huskies and it went well for about 5 minutes, after that, pitbull began to attack my female dog over and over again. It is very important for me to correct this behavior. Is there any advice or approach I can take to correct her so we can work for it wont happened again? Owner of the pitbull is visually very concerned about her behavior so it might be over protective behavior towards her owner? I'm able to work on pitbull without owner, just need some advice what to try. Thanks in advance!

I work at a doggy daycare and just want to ask is it healthy play for more than two dogs to play together? For example if two dogs are playing, and a third joins in but is NOT bullying or being rude is that okay? And if it is, why is that okay? Sometimes i feel we over manage the group and it causes the dogs to disregard us and become more chaotic.

If all dogs have a good time, that's totally fine. If one dog is overwhelmed, intervene. If one dog stops because another dog is getting in his way, redirect that other dog. I don't have any idea why it wouldn't be okay, except for people feeling they lose control of the situation. That's okay, they don't need to micromanage everything.

Hi I am living Amsterdam Europe my name is Inga and I have a American Bully classic in general a good boy. Born 29.08.2020. He is barely of leach anymore because he attacks other dogs mainly male dogs . A friend of mine thinks he dominant I am not yet sure. I correct strongly to get him out of his tunnel vision. He has a good friend also male not spayed they are like brothers rolling on there back belly up very happy play. He never attacked me when playing he gets excited and tries to hump me after we played for 7 /8/9 minutes and push him off. I keep that kind of play limited. We bicycle together we walk about 50 km a week so gets enough exercise. He loves people and children and if possible kissing a lot. I am training him on the word come on the leach of the leach in house so that it becomes a kind of a muscle memory. It is hard him not being of leach. I have seen many of your video and my Beau is not Bear but I need help and think your approach is the best one with dogs ….Thank you for time best wishes

You can keep dog on leash or long line until it learns to respect your verbal correction. That way you can pop the leash after your verbal if it doesn’t listen, as well as still have control to intervene physically to stop if necessary. Dog only earns being off the leash with being responsive.

People who say don't yell at the dogs are projecting human stuff onto dog stuff. Does not work. I have seen my dog get tunnel vision, especially with scents. He followed a scent out of the front yard, and he knows not to go out of the yard. There was a chain link fence right there, so I banged on it and it made a loud noise and took him out of his trance. He came right back to his yard. My yell will not interrupt him. I need to find a different way. Maybe I should get a whistle. When the dog next door comes to the back fence and acts aggressively and my dog engages with him, I have started using a bull horn. That works great! It stops the engagement at the fence.

Whistles can work. Leave it commando will also, if you put in the work. First with treats on the ground, then work your way up to balls, frisbees and sticks. First before you throw, then while they're in full chase mode. Practice that regularly.

It also matters to have a good bond with your dog, no? If you always just yell at your kid, it won't like you very much. It will avoid you when it gets the chance. I think doing positive stuff is also important. Like taking the time to play ball with your son, or go fishing or whatever. They will listen to you, because they'll think what you do makes them benefit. Sure, there is a time for everything. Of course you wouldn't say to your kid "if you don't steal gum when we are at the store, I'll take you fishing this weekend." ... I guess you'll get my point.

Yup thats my dog the Tan dog every dam time. He's a greyhound cross and he's highly prey driven. We went on a walk with 5 other dogs and we had to do that about 5 times break it up. As soon as there's speed involved boom he's over the dogs. Hard because he's a rescue we don't know what happened before we got him.

Only if the owners of other dogs at the park knew this and would correct their dogs. They would sit at the same spot and their dog now thinks it's his territory and gets aggressive if a new dog goes there while the owner just sits and watches them be aggressive. I've got a 9 month old lab, got him when he was 7 months, super nice and I have to protect him at the park from such dogs.

Joel Beckman, you are my top, go-to teacher, and following your lead has helped me the most with my dog-aggressive rescue GSD/Mastiff. Re a topic you raise in this video, I have often stumbled over your use of the term "punishment" -- not for P.C. reasons but because the dictionary says: To subject to a penalty for an offense, sin, or fault; To inflict a penalty for (an offense); To handle or use roughly; damage or hurt. Instead of any of this but especially the third meaning, I see you put pressure on the dog to prevent, stop, and shape. Punishment implies dog is rational and can connect a penalty imposed after the fact, with the prior fact itself. Instead, I see you putting pressure in the moment, creating an instant association in the dog's mind between his action and good/bad. Two different things. Also, sorry but, "negative reinforcement" seems a pretty dumb phrase some "expert" with an agenda invented. I think it means pressure? Just my two cents. Thanks to the moon for your reasonable, clear, no nonsense explanations complete with demonstrations helping us regular dog owners. A huge contribution to the world. I have also learned a lot from Larry Krohn, and Matt Welch is valuable too. Tom Upper Canine also good. Zack, sorry, not realistic, though a reminder of the broader landscape and good for a reset if one has narrowed too much down and lost the fun and light touch.
@robertbaelen7656

Negative reinforcemant does not mean pressure. Negative is a minus a taking away, a reinforcement is making stronger, more, when you want more of the reward you may considder doing more of the previous. So NR is taking away a reward, so you may considder to do less of the previous. NR feels as a punishment.
