The fact that this channel exists and the sheer quality of each video is insane. What a time to be alive, I doubt there’s ever been a better time to learn Japanese.

Regarding the "blind gut" thing, in European languages like my very own Swedish it's got names like "blindtarm", meaning blind intestine. It's a relic from Latin, intestinum caecum (blind gut), and refers to how the caecum ends "blindly", in a dead end, with the caecal appendix. I presume the Japanese got the name from Germany, where it is blinddarm. Note how it is basically the exact same as the Swedish name.

Thanks for the clarification. I actually assumed it was the same for other European languages and probably has its origin in Latin, but didn't check.

Interesting, Indonesian also got the word from Dutch calque, blind intestine but we loan translated it as dead end (of a road, one of the sense) intestine. edit spelling: calqued*

I imagine more likely they got it from the Dutch giving their connection to Japan during this time.

the actual etymology of 盲腸 is actually from middle Chinese. Where the Chinese got it from is another matter.

Interestingly, the “ran” 蘭 in 蘭方医 comes from the Japanese words for Holland “オランダ” or 阿蘭陀 in Kanji. The Dutch were the only ones allowed to trade with the Japanese during the isolationist Sakoku period. And so all the western scientific documents the Japanese received came from Dutch traders. The study of these Dutch language manuscripts came to be known as 蘭学 らんがく during the Edo period.

matt, thank you so much! After meeting you here, I watched your n4 grammar video. さっき、1st どき。。。すごく日本語の先生の話ことがわかた! I just watched a Japanese teaching video... and it's the first time, I understand all the Japanese she said.... without any translation.... ながらすごい楽しいのかな! Might be, you didn't teach me all the stuff about Japanese, but you are still the best Japanese teacher I encounter! coz you are a big inspiration! I bought a 3DS and my first Japanese switch game, I started using anki, and I started learning Japanese without the textbook...just becoz you give me all the inspiration! You are the real deal!

Glad to see you finally got this I remember it was one the choices early on in the vocab series being voted on during which it was a Japanese only release. Hope you do another one in this game to show of the sword/gun style. Think it would also be funny for you to do a Kingdom Come Deliverance one since they actually have Japanese dub.

Really enjoyed this, would love to see you do more of this game. Due to it's dialect stuff and the fact you know Kansai Ben well this could be a unique and extremely valuable series for Kansai ben learners to watch you to play through. I'd love to join the discord but I'm not earning atm, it's a paid subscription right?

This is amazing. I've always loved gaming and to pair it with learning is great. Even better when it's broken down like this! 😮 I started learning Japanese when I was a lot younger but i really struggled to motivate myself and went through stages of my life where i was a little less interested in Japanese media so never got very far. Found the Like a Dragon series and it reignited my love! Hoping that I can make some actual progress using your channel! 👍

12:38 I think what the Majima-looking guy is saying is "Sakamoto Ryōma is upstairs" instead of "you go upstairs" because... **SPOILER** There is an imposter posing as Ryōma that they are there to confront. This whole scene plays out in first person, so we don't actually know who's perspective it is from until the reveal at the end. So we're going to confront "Ryōma" but find out from that dialogue and the character shot that we are actually Ryōma. It's supposed to be confusing at first I believe, but it plays into all of the false identity stuff that is throughout the story from the 2nd chapter or so onward.

I wonder how they translated the sentence in English, considering they deliberately made it vague in Japanese.

Hey Matt, thanks as always for your work. I ended up searching for the Musashi 2003 series you were talking about towards the end but could not find a solid link of it. Do you possibly have any idea where I could look? I'm quite interested in it now, lol. Stay safe, and thanks again.

In German appendix is "Blinddarm" which would literally also translate to "blind gut".

Interesting to see Kiryu play Sakamoto Ryouma. If Ryouma failed in his revolution he would have gone down as Japan's most infamous criminals and not as a heroic figure.

Learning language is about repetition and if you like games you going to learn a lot of vocab such as 怪盗 (かいとう) - phantom thief same for English. I see vanquished all the time in video games but do you ever really use it real life.
