Unimportant minor correction: The kanji for いいわけ (iiwake) to mean "excuse" is 言い訳. So it is more like a "spoken reason" rather than a "good reason". Tremendous video as always! I love this series

I played the game itself but the cutscenes go by too quickly and you can't pause or go back. I'm now re-watching the cutscenes in both Japanese and English on KZbin which is a lot better, but still some bits are tricky since it's not 1-1 translation with English. Game Gengo going through it line-by-line is the best option, looking forward to it!

Yeah, this reminded me that more "cinematic" games without pause and logs are still out of the question for me. I understand a lot when I have time to think, but my brain is way too slow for real life Japanese :D

@@m.m.2341 Watching the cutscenes on KZbin is a lifesaver! Obviously I love playing the game too, but the story is good enough to watch on its own like this.

58:18 - I wondered why he said から at the end of this sentence, as it doesn't seem like "because" or "since" fit here. He's saying what he'll do, not offering an explanation. I see this often, a sentence using から (or say ending with って) which doesn't seem to fit. Turns out there's another definition for から "7. expresses sympathy or warning", I'm wondering if it's this one instead.
@MisterM240211 ай бұрын
26:00 - Rather than just 決まっている, it's に決まっている which is a set phrase with its own dictionary entry "sure to ...; certain to ...; bound to ...; it's natural that ...; it's obvious that ...". You were close enough though, just pointing it out for anyone curious :) In my own watch-through of the cutscenes on KZbin, I'm now at the bit right after Macalania Temple - no "Macarena" joke in Japanese, unfortunately! I think the voice actors in both games are great and it's interesting to compare the personality of each character's counterpart. I love English Wakka because I love John DiMaggio's voice, but Japanese Wakka's pretty cool too.

Nice! Just heard the theme song of this game the other day for the first time in like 15 years. Played this like crazy when it first came out over winter break in high school! The ps2 final fantasy graphics upgrade from ps1 was so exciting! Back then new consoles were biiiiig upgrades.

Thanks again for another great video of my favourite Game of all time...but watching these videos disencourage me in some way... 😀 here I am thinking after almost 1 year of self-study I might be doing good...and all of a sudden i am brought back to reality. I will def. join your discord sooner rather than later...:D Keep up the good work! Question though: Are you ever planning on making a video for the usages of "って"? as i now learned it is used instead of は and more important as quotation in MANY different forms like you would use with と言った、と答えた etc... i know I am asking for a lot but this throws me off :D

I hope you will someday teach us how to politely ask a game dev to consider increasing the font size of their game. The game I'm learning Japanese to be able to understand is the superhero game Live A Hero, and while I now know enough Japanese to understand at least 90% of the text when it is legible (in large part thanks to the Game Gengo vocab series), the font size in Live A Hero is soooo tiny that some kanji blob together into an illegible blob, and the " and ° marks are compressed into the exact same pair of pixels there's literally not enough resolution at that font size to make b* and p* things look any different, which frequently amplifies the already immense difficulty of reading katakana words, which are often already ambiguous even before getting compressed too much

Good question, according to a Japanese resource at NHK aimed at Japanese people - "「~るほうが」が中立的な言い方なのに対して、「~たほうが」のほうが、伝える側の推薦する気持ちが強く出る言い方だと言えるでしょう。" Says that る with 方がいい is more neutral way of stating it's 'good to....', whereas た + 方がいい has a stronger feeling of recommending something 'should...' www.nhk.or.jp/bunken/research/kotoba/20190301_5.html
