Nice intro.Just a quick note for others. The steel tweezers are cross lock tweezers which grip when you let go and let go when you squeeze - especially useful in the third hand base. They also have fibre pads on them which stop you burning yourself after they've been holding the piece in the flame for a while.You didn't mention your soldering block/tile.

Hi Jason, thanks so much for your comment, that's a good info! As for the soldering block, it's a regular cheap one from Cooksongold, it's called Asbestos Substitute Soldering Block and it's only £4.60 inc. VAT :) I have two and been working on them for ages

Thank u. I needed this. I make silver jump rings for chain mail jewelry especially Persian and Byzantine styles. I just purchased a flux cone and dish..I also ordered the 3rd hand and I found. For don tool from my fathers jewelry making kit. I have. Torch as well,oh I also purchased a soldering fire rock not brick...do I need to anneal my 18 and 20 Gauge wires I’m using half hard round wire. I also have the tripod wire soldering kit. I also bought 3 tweezers plus I purchased a jump ring machine...sorry to bother u with my rambling....take care and 🙏🏻 thank u. Have a gr8 day..this really helped...

Hi Eleonora :) Thanks for your comment! I'm using small batches of pickling liquid, so don't usually have to throw it away. If I did, it's a safety pickle which is ok to be drained dissolved in water. I don't use any other toxic substances at the moment. But they usually come with own instructions how to get rid of them. Hope that helps! :)

I already watched many videos an read much about soldering, but my solder keeps forming little balls while flaming it (do you have an explanation?). Hi! I got mine from Cooksongold :) For silver you will use silver solder, and for gold filled the best would be gold solder

I'm sorry, but I;m not sure about it, as I'm not working with copper myself. When I practiced on some little copper bits, I've used silver solder, but as you can imagine, it was visible. I hope you will be able to find some suggestions online, good luck! 🥰

A little fire extinguisher. Shouldn't need it because the amount of fire I work with is very small. I keep the soldering space safe and clear, no items that might catch the fire. I once dropped a freshly soldered metal on the bench - it did burn it a little bit but there wasn't a flame and no fire.

in jewellery making it's most commont to use the solder for proper metal, like silver or gold, and work with the flame. The solder you talk about, is probably the one used for other non precious metals

Hi Toby! Thank's for your comment. So these three solders are flowing at different temperature, higher for hard solder and lower for easy one. So basically, if you'd be soldering more than one joint, you would want to use different solder to prevent previously soldered joints from melting again. For example, you have three different joints to solder. You will start with hard solder and move through medium to easy for next joints. Does that make sense? Also, I've learned that you can use medium solder for general soldering and easy one for ares of less stress, for repairs and some final operations. Check here, Nancy explains it well: www.nancylthamilton.com/techniques/soldering/about-solder/ I have some issues with medium solder, for some reason it doesn't want to melt and flow as easy as hard solder does! Which is weird and doesn't make sense considering that it is suppose to melt in lover tempreature. It might be that my solder in particular is of poor quality... Anyway, been using hard solder for rings mostly and easy for bits and pieces where there's not much pressure or stress. Hope that helps! :)

Hi! Thanks so much for your lovely comment! I buy from Cooksongold, they are great, their service and product. Never had the need to try other suppliers. I use mostly hard solder and then easy solder. I wasn't quite happy with their medium solder but maybe I just didn't use it properly :P Hope that helps a bit :)
