I must say a thing for all people who ask how to pronounce the "r" in words like Barad-dur or Mordor: they are not words in Black Speech, they are words in Elvish Sindarin, so you must pronounce them like in Elvish
@BruderSenf5 жыл бұрын
the sharp pronunciation is very german or at least for me as a german speaker it is, maybe a "little over the top" but not to extravagant

This is super fascinating, I do have some questions tho: you say “must find” but write “need”, so which does “bolkut” translate to? You also emphasise it as “bol-KUT” when you read the sentence, guessing that was unintentional. Also there’s a “z” missing in “nazgul” at 5ish min in. Loving your videos tho! Next stop: that dictionary you mentioned in the comments somewhere

For me, the vowels sound like in Chinese, as that is my first language and I think it is easier to let me remember it and pronounce it. Great video though! Learned a bunch of things.
@Scarecrow5454 жыл бұрын
It seems the French 'r' only applies when it does not follow a vowel, as in the case of 'uruk' or 'burzum'. Is this a hard rule?
@daledurbin19906 жыл бұрын
How would you pronounce Barad-dûr?
@LanguagesofMiddleEarth6 жыл бұрын
Hm, good question! I want to say the only exception to the French “r” is “Mordor” so I’d most likely be “baghrad-dûghr.”
@cameronleonard24516 жыл бұрын
Languages of Middle Earth if I remember right the nazgûl and others that are high up in the dark armies pronounce it like that. Standard orcs and etc. Tap the R's, but I think that's because they use alot of westrond.

So, how do you order coffee in the Black Speech?
@TeianDown4 жыл бұрын
Well how about that? TIL "coffee" is actually in the dictionary, and in three Black Speech dialects (that actually agree with each other). A simple orcish way might be "Thrak khak" [Bring coffee] Coffee addicts might say "Bolk-izg khak akrat, luup-izg" [I need coffee to drink, I beg] Direct translation of how normal tarks like us actually order would be "Shulg-izg brogb khak" [I would like a coffee]

Is mordor a black speech word or an elvish word?
@poryg53505 жыл бұрын
You say Mordor is the only exception. However, in the One Ring it's Daghburz-ishi, which in plain English is "In the land of Mordor".
@LanguagesofMiddleEarth5 жыл бұрын
Mordor is the only exception for the r to be pronounced like a Spanish r instead of a French r!
@poryg53505 жыл бұрын
@@LanguagesofMiddleEarth I see. It just didn't make sense to me that Mordor would even exist as a word in Dark speech, since there's the Daghburz word. But I guess it might be because only Sauron, Mouth of Sauron and Ring wraights speak the pure Speech of Mordor, the rest (Uruk and lesser army men) use a newer language of Mordorese.
@LanguagesofMiddleEarth5 жыл бұрын
Exactly, Sauron didn’t like the Uruk-hai speaking in BS since he knew they’d mess it up, and he was the angel of order after all!
@pietrobuoso11695 жыл бұрын
No one but Sauron and Nazgul spoke Black Speech, and so all the names are not in Black speech but in Elvish Sindarin: Mordor is in Elvish (mor-dor = black-land, cfr. Endor (middle-earth); Also Sauron is a word in Elvish and no servant of Sauron used it. So the "r" of Mordor is not an exception, only that Mordor is not in Black speech.
@nakitsukikuronuma4 жыл бұрын
I'm disappointed to find that the consonants are just pronounced harshly rather than having more velar or uvular consonants. Though I guess it does work to make the language sound more "ugly". I'm just annoyed that, in D&D, Dwarvish, Draconic, and Orc, are all described as having "hard consonants" (though Dwarvish is at least given "guttural sounds")
