View more at www.MathAndScience.com. In this lesson, you will learn the concept of decimal multiplication. We will use models and pictures to illustrate what it really means to multiply a decimal by another decimal. The second number functions to chop, or cut, the original number into a smaller number. We graphically show how to use this to multiply decimals and show that the answer makes sense intuitively. In later lessons, we will show the steps to multiply the decimals out by hand and how to place the decimal point in the final answer.

It's kinda gross that I was not taught it as intelligently as this. Here is the explanation I got from the schooling: Take the first number, and put it in the calculator. I knew they were fractions and parts, but what was the calculator doing? What was it showing me? I never knew until now. You are a gem sir, I appreciate you.

This put tears in my eyes as I remember the frustration with learning math many moons ago and nobody really having a way to explain to me math in a way that made sense. It seems like until I can understand WHY something makes sense it was hard to do the mechanics so you match my learning style so much. I wish I could go back through my math training and learn it graphically. It was not until pre-calculus and I saw the equations being graphed that a light bulb went on in my head and I saw that math could be meaningful and exciting to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Also exciting to see how really I could use your technique to multiply 16 x 5 in my head. I don't know but I do know that 16 X .5 = 8 so that would mean 16 x 5 should be 80! I can do that in my head. I never knew I could do math in my head that way!.

Sir Gibson, First and foremost I would like to thank you for helping me gain confidence in Mathematics. It is a subject I have always loved, but never truly grasped the fundamentals, so I flunked it all throughout High-School. 1yr out and I stumbled upon your course. Purchasing it has been the best decision I have made, halfway though the Algebra1 course and I can't believe concepts that I thought we're difficult are a piece of cake now. Can't believe math was this easy alll along. Can proudly say I am almost always looking forward to the next lesson and doing the quizzes and extra practice. Something I'd always skip in High-school, because it was so frustrating to not understand. Looking forward to any courses you roll out in the future!❤

Is this right how I understand ? basically 0.4 x 0.5 is 4 pieces (fractions) and i split every piece, and i get 5 pieces for every piece (4 groups of 5 pieces each) , and those 5 pieces represents 5 hundreths, becaue they are smaller than those 4 'whole' pieces which i started with, so finally i got 20 pieces in total and i need 100 to make a whole so its 20/100

This decimal multiplication through graphs better explains the concept underlying it. I think multiplicand is represented by horizontal lines, multiplier by vertical lines and the product by overlapping area. One common mistake while performing decimal multiplication is ignoring the decimal points. Actually they count in the multiplication. For e.g 0.2×0.1=0.02 and not 0.2

I feel sorry for children because this philosophy is not taught as it should be taught. Only old fashion teachers know how to. This is where the gift of teaching comes into play.

Sweet lord.... What about multiplying do you have to not get for this to make sense? I was hoping that there would be some revelation about why the std multiplication works. I know how to multiply by decimals and I'm ripping my hair out trying to understand this.
