Oh, so this is why some of my best forehands have been scramble shots? That makes sense.

Great video as always. One piece of advice I would give to those struggling with the sidearm is to emphasize the flick. "Throwing" the disc is less important than you think. Spin is king.
@benharrison58164 ай бұрын
Agree with that. Start with chipshots and focus on getting that lag/snap and consistent clean releases with slower discs. Then slowly start adding more power. If you go out and huck it like a baseball, you won't have enough spin for how fast the disc is moving and it'll wobble and turn way too much.
@brianc16514 ай бұрын
Yes. Still not good and too much wobble, but my forehead has improved so much over the last couple months by learning how to flick it, not throw it.

Great 'Intermediate Forehand' Video. For viewers who already know step 1: to grip with the pad of the middle finger dug in. And step 2: keep your hand facing up (palm to the sky), this video is great to watch next: approachs and shorter mids can start out straddling/ chest facing the target. To get distance, you start sideways but end up facing the target. THANK YOU for showing this. It helps me teach it.

my forehand improved instantly just from always facing foreward alone, rather than starting with my feet turned and my chest turned to the side like a backhand position. good drill!

Even a short approach out of the bushes is of great advantage if you have it.

I would suggest watching Uli's short video. He says, take some putters and just try pushing them off your fingers. Don't worry about distance. Just try to spin it and reduce wobble. Doing this a lot for a couple months, I went from completely uncomfortable forehand to using it on every upshot I can, any hole that dog legs right from bout 250 and in and often in the woods. I am still not great, but my forehand is very useable now.

Another right on and helpful dose of advice. Similar to the backhand, if you want god distance the body needs to lead the arm.

Hmmm... I disagree. The arm has to be way faster than the body. But thanks!

@@dgspindoctor Poor choice of words on my part. I was trying to say that in both the backhand forehand throw the body starts to move (rotates) first. True?
@dgspindoctor4 ай бұрын
Well, yeah...in a way. But the rotation in backhand is done by weight shifting and not rotating. I still disagree with you :)
@joeblow24264 ай бұрын
@@dgspindoctor Thanks for the reply. But don't you rotate the upper body in a right handed forehand by shifting you weight from the left to the right foot, moving the legs, hips, body, and arm in that order? Even if you are standing still? Yes, you are actively throwning and the arm out accelerates the body. Are you saying you move the upper body first before the lower body? I'm confused. Maybe it's me. Perhaps, again, I'm being unclear by saying "the body moves first." And I'm the one muddling things up. Maybe I've been doing it wrong for years 😳.

Going to give this technique a try, but I have a grip question. I watched your gentleman’s forehand video where you demonstrate the disc pivot as a low injury risk option. I couldn’t get it to release properly as of yet but I’m still intrigued. Are you using a similar grip in this video and would you say that method is compatible with this technique?
@dgspindoctor3 ай бұрын
In this particular video, no. But otherwise, yes, it's a general rule for how to throw sidearm.

I saw Silver Latt say the same thing re: facing hips towards the target. I can't help but wonder why the mechanics would differ so fundamentally from baseball pitchers, for example, who definitely turn sideways whether pitching from a full wind-up or "the stretch" and c an throw *hard* (> 160 km/h, 100 mph) with all variety of spin. Just curious. I found the best results facing my hips forward personally, but...
@dgspindoctor4 ай бұрын
Good question, and I don't have the answer. Maybe it's because baseball is thrown over the shoulder? Dunno.

@dgspindoctor4 ай бұрын
@@jussiimmonen3348 How so? It's only an extreme annie, and thrown from a little higher.
@Kalsu244 ай бұрын
It does not differ fundamentally, this is a good example video of a baseball throw : kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIuup32Pa8x3nMk Here's vide of silver latt throwing sidearm: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZ2mZn2naK1geqM The reason why overhand throw especially in baseball is thrown more "sideways" initially at the tart is because you can get more power from reaching behind you. If you do that with disc golf sidearm that causes most likely rounding. If you check overhand throws from some powerful throwers (like jake wolff for example) that will look like a baseball pitch.

Well, I'm in the Scott Stokely camp and don't recommend it. The elbow can and will swing by from very close to the hip, but deliberately tucking it sounds bad to me.

Have you watched Broderic's forehand tutorials? He talks about "punching the elbow through the gap" and "throw your elbow, not your hand" and those cues make more sense to me than tucking the elbow.
