30:00 Question about duplication: In Blender it actually makes a difference if you copy an object or if you duplicate it with ALT+D. copy paste in blender does create a copy but alt+D creates a new instance. Alt+D is very important if you want to have thousands or millions of lets say... grass bushes in your scene Its either 1 million copies or 1 million instances which does make a HUUUUGE difference in memory consumption.

Around 1:50:20 when you are setting your lights to stationary, my shadows turn all very soft and fuzzy. There is also a little light leak where the corners of the wall meet. Matter of fact, throughout most of the tutorial, my shadows have all been a bit blurrier than yours. When I increase the gather quality I see no noticeable difference at all, and yes I have the post process volume set to infinite. Is there a general lumen shadow quality setting somewhere? Anyone else have very soft shadows? Also thanks a ton for such valuable information for free!! Unbelievable!

In the intro to lighting section, starting at 1:29:12 (I'm at the stage where you're going through the light types, and have deleted the existing point light, and then added a new one), you're able to increase the softness of your shadows using the source radius setting. This has absolutely no effect on my shadows, unless I rebuild the lighting. But it's not real time. If I then move the light, the shadows go back to being as they were when I opened the lighting project. There are some UI changes in the version of Unreal I'm using (5.0.1), which doesn't help. Also, there is the word 'preview' (written in reverse) on the walls, depending on where I place this point light. Help! :/

Did you figure this out? edit: In Light properties, if you enable Distance Field Shadows, that seems to solve the issue.

@@vator_rs Yes, I found that setting...and when you check it, you get soft shadows. But then the Source Angle (at the top of the Light dropdown), for determining how soft the shadows appear, is a little quirky. I'm new to UE, so I'm not sure if this kind of quirkiness is typical. :)

At around 16:00 - You're discussing the WASD controls of the camera and how it generally matches a First Person Shooter. Well, in most video games, holding shift allows you to move faster, but in Unreal, it stops the camera dead. How can I set it so that holding shift moves the camera faster?
@mountieman183 жыл бұрын
I don't know a setting for that but you can use the scroll wheel to change the camera movement speed.
@DavesChaoticBrain3 жыл бұрын
@@mountieman18 Sure, and that's fine in various scenarios, but I've got 20 years of instinct built up that I'm having to fight against. If there was a really good reason for the dead stop rather than a speed up, I'd be less annoyed by it, but I don't know the reason. haha
@honerablemention45502 жыл бұрын
@@DavesChaoticBrain Mainly just so you can keep the camera speed set to higher, then press shift to stop instantly without going through the full length of movement. it's more versatile that way. If shift was meant to "sprint" you would have less control over where to stop since using right click also makes you select things, shift is the best option for stopping where you want and still be able to move around the scene quickly.
@DavesChaoticBrain2 жыл бұрын
@@honerablemention4550 Hmmmm...Still sounds awkward but maybe I'll give it a try. Speaking of Right Click selecting things, how can I make it NOT do that? And when you move on to the dynamic lighting section, your room is crisp and the shadows are clean. Mine is patchy and uncertain. Its like lumen isn't actually functioning. The only thing lighting my scene is when I look directly at the floor where the light from the windows is and the auto exposure kicks in.
