Example of a material balance on a distillation column used to separate two distinct streams, a vapor and a liquid phase. Both streams include recycle components back into the distillation column.
Made by faculty at the University of Colorado Boulder Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

We can work up a 3 component material balance example. Keep an eye out soon. Also, check out our videos at our website for a more organized list for your courses. We may have something already there.

hi,can you explain the question about Distillation of Benzene,Toluene ,and Xylene?
@marleysac89
@marleysac89 11 жыл бұрын
This problem is not correct. You have labeled the 'top-product' as having .98 and .02 composition when the problem states that the vapor leaving the condenser (170kmol/h) is the one with that composition. That changes the whole problem as finding n1 isn't as simple as plug and chug.

The problem is fine as is. The composition leaving the condenser into the column will be the same composition of the distillate since we are using a total condenser. All the liquid must have the same composition.

Great video,thanks! Anyway i was getting confused when you did the raoult law with toluene instead of using hexane , where did it come from? ahah

could you please answer this question A fractionating column is to be designed to separate 100 liters per second of feed at 20 °C with a composition of 69 vol% Methanol and 31 vol% Water into a top product of 98 vol% Methanol and a bottom product of 95 vol% Water at twice the minimum reflux ratio. You can assume that the column operates with a total condenser. The VLE data is provided in Table 1. a) Perform a mass balance on the column and determine the molar flows & compositions of the feed, top product and bottom product streams. b) Determine the value of q, the slope of the q-line, and the intercept it makes with the x-axis. c) Determine graphically the minimum reflux ratio, and the minimum number of theoretical stages within the column. d) Determine the number of theoretical stages in the column at the normal operating conditions, i.e. when the reflux ratio is twice the minimum. e) Determined the amount of steam required for the reboiler. f) Determine the cooling duty for the total condenser. g) Determine the minimum number of theoretical stages using the Fenske-Underwood equation, and compare them with the value obtained by graphical construction in part d). Thermodynamic Data: Steam at 2.5 bar pressure is available for heating. From steam tables, this has a latent heat of 2182 kJ.kg-1 Molecular weight of Methanol = 32 g.mol-1 Density of Methanol = 792 kg.m-3 Molar latent heat for Methanol = 35300 J.mol-1 Specific heat capacity for Methanol =2.5 kJ.kg-1.K-1 Molecular weight of Water = 18 g.mol-1 Density of Water = 1000 kg.m-3 Molar latent heat for Water = 40626 J.mol-1 Specific heat capacity for Water = 4.18 kJ.kg-1.K-1 Show transcribed image text

Why do you pick the Toluene to do the balance? I assume you mixed up Hexane with Toluene, but if that's not it, I don't know where or why you picked Toluene
