Learned helplessness is a psychological concept that can be summarized well with the phrase "no matter what I do, I won't achieve anything." Learned helplessness refers to a state of powerlessness, the feeling of having no control or influence over what happens in our lives.
In this video, I discuss how it arises and also provide some strategies on how to overcome this state of helplessness, although it is sometimes not easy, as it depends on its origin. It is not the same to have lived through experiences that make us feel nullified or confused for a few months or weeks as it is to have lived them for years.
Learned helplessness can lead to a state of passivity in which we resign ourselves to or give up on a situation without doing anything to change it. Learned helplessness affects our motivation, our self-concept, and how we perceive the things around us. It is also a state that appears in some psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, and certain personality disorders.
