Henri Matisse: A collection of 812 works (HD)
Description: "Henri Matisse is widely regarded as the greatest colorist of the twentieth century and as a rival to Pablo Picasso in the importance of his innovations. He emerged as a Post-Impressionist, and first achieved prominence as the leader of the French movement Fauvism. Although interested in Cubism, he rejected it, and instead sought to use color as the foundation for expressive, decorative, and often monumental paintings. As he once controversially wrote, he sought to create an art that would be "a soothing, calming influence on the mind, rather like a good armchair." Still life remained favorite subject
throughout his career; North Africa was also an important inspiration, and, towards the end of his life, he made an important contribution to collage with a series of works using cut-out shapes of color. He is also highly regarded as a sculptor."

I can see how pictures that look like photographs are just miming reality but art that seems to show life through a spiritual lens sees the magic overlooked in everyday life.

I read some of the comments. Always a risky proposition on KZbin. But nevermind. I've been an artist my entire life, since age 5 probably earlier. No amount of negative comments, even the entire world could ever convince me that Henri Matisse is not one of the most wonderful painters I've ever seen since I first became aware of his art in 1972 art school :-) And even now, I watch this KZbin video and find my appreciation for forms and color growing as I appreciate his work. He will always be one of my greatest art heroes. J'adore l'oeuvre d'Henri Matisse!

I agree that seeing the paintings in chronological order would be more valuable to seeing how Matisse evolved as an artist. The dates and locations of where he created the works would also be very useful. His paper cut-outs and stained glass windows, created at the end of his life are filled with so much joy, in spite of his physical limitations. He was always expanding his visions, and some paintings are just better than others. I love his use of colors in his paintings and paper cut-outs. Thank you for this video.

It would be more interesting to see paintings in chronological order. That way you would see the progression of artist in his/her career. Of course it would require more time when making the video. Even order of early, middle, late periods of artists would be enought. And one more thing: Do not add zoom to the images!

@@Kasparoscar Yeah but "progress" in art is not same as in some other fields. Progress is more of change in style and matter even if it degenerates. But if you put works in chronological order you could easily see that what artist was thinking or what progress/degenerates has he obtained.

Negative comments don't understand Matisse as genius color mixer...his most famous disciple imo Richard Diebenkorn exemplifies Matisse's contribution to art as a formalist that established most of the precepts of modern abstract works. Of course his technique can be criticized as malformed, ugly crooked noses and other disjointed anatomical affects...what you see is what you get, and most professional painters agree on his importance in the sweep of art history. Then there are those who think that Bob Ross is great, with his Hallmark card renderings.

comparing bob ross to matisse....is a poor point..it is not about subjectivity...but rather does the quality of ones work..place him/her into the arena of great artists...a debate that would never include ross...

@@Kasparoscar ironic since your ideal world representation is just a simple sense perception representation. Very limiting and ignorant to metaphysics and forms within themselves. You seem very ignorant to how we think about empiricism and perceive reality. You can't seem to reason past the fact that sense representation isn't the only form of expression and knowledge. Deeper and innate expression has a right to exist too. Also, your judgement of what is beautiful and what isn't is all based on dogmatic ideals from forms of ideology like faith, morality and so on that have been cast aside by modern artists because of their foundation in arbitrary logic. You don't have a clue why you even deteste modern art because to you talent is the only reason to make art, that reasoning alone is contradictory to art itself.
