The spare tire air windshield washer is genius, love unique touches like this :)
@catfish5527 жыл бұрын
Not exactly unique, it's ported over straight from the Beetle.

Doge Maverick genius and stupidity sometimes goes together and becomes stuff like the spare tire powered washer. Compared to not having a washer, it was a cheap solution and at least interesting. I guess "creative" might be a more precise way to describe it, as you say :)
@Zizzily7 жыл бұрын
Not sure how it's "retarded" really. It doesn't take much pressure at all, and as long as you're checking your air pressure every month like you should be, it shouldn't be an issue at all. Honestly, it's probably less problematic than a windshield washer pump and certainly better than the cars from that air that hand a hand pump on the dash!
@PrawnzHD7 жыл бұрын
@Zzyzx Wolfe Yeah this is exactly what i mean, it has kind of a genius simplicity that can basically survive forever without replacement or repair. Even though it is not worth it practically for our day and age, in a more unreliable time simplified solutions was a great way to get more reliability in the practicality you had.

Pressurizing the window washer fluid with the spare tire... I think that's the italian bit of the car's heritage.
@thetrannyshop55967 жыл бұрын
FokkerBoombass Beetles had that too.

This was on most VW and also Porsche 914. Its actually a very clever system that was used in a time when electric pumps were expensive. You have to put about 3 bars in the spare for the washer to work. When pressure drops there is a safety valve so you will never empty your spare and you will always have enough pressure to use it. As air pushes the fluid from the top you don't loose any air until the washer bottle is empty. Then the valve stops the air flow.

Btw, that rubber strip around the fuel filler isn't to stop drips getting on the paint, but so that the nozzle doesn't scratch the fender when it rests on the edge of the filler neck while pumping - back when you could lock the pump on and walk away to clean your windows and stuff.

Where are you where gas pumps can't be left running?
@SuperFIFTHGEAR7 жыл бұрын
The UK. At work the ones lock on, there's a metal clip at the bottom that you flick on with one of your fingers, but that's only because we fill trucks up, and they can take 1200 litres (320 US gallons).
@aussiebloke6097 жыл бұрын
+SuperFIFTHGEAR Some states in the US still have those, but when I lived in Pennsylvania, all the fueling stations had those clips removed - presumably for safety reasons, but that's just a guess. So you have to stand there and squeeze the pump the whole time for it to work (while freezing in the winter, or broiling in the summer), instead of latching it on and going to clean the windscreen or whatever. :-P

CORRECTION That is a 1/4 panel. If you are looking at FRONT corner of Falcon it's a fender. Quarter panels are welded and normally only used in back, Fenders are bolted. As a Auto Body man it is driving me crazy

Interesting wiper pressure solution. I had a 1975 Ford Mercury Capri 171 ci v6 that had no motor also. It literally had a squeeze bulb mounted to the inside of the driver's floor compartment. Worked fine, never clogged or anything. Strange when you first realize it.

Cool story bro time... My dad was a mechanic at a VW dealership when these were news A customer bought a brand new Karmann Ghia, and wanted a radio installed right away (even the radio was a dealer option, these things didn't come with anything..) The man installing the radio did not use punch before drilling a hole for the antenna, and the drill slid and buggered up the whole fender area on this brand new car... I'm sure it was fun for the salesman to explain to his excited customer why his faunceh new car wouldn't be ready for a few days afterall...fail.

Zodiac victims Bryan Hartnell and Cecilia Shepard drove a Karmann Ghia to Lake Berryessa where that particular attack occurred. Months later when detectives finally arranged for a search warrant on one of Arthur Leigh Allen's many trailer homes, they found him driving a recently purchased Karmann Ghia of his own. And that's what I'll always remember about this car.
