I really like Josh. I’m new to harp and struggling. Just by watching him I’m encourage to practice. Josh you are my inspiration thank for sharing your skill with us. Much love.

Note that the 2nd minor chord in the B section is a minor iii not ii (third chord up from the root, not second - I played it correctly but named it incorrectly, haha!) Thanks Francis. Did you like this type of episode? Let me know and I might try it again :)

A lovely song and a most enjoyable lesson Josh. Phrase by phrase. Chord by chord. Clarity . Beautiful sound from your harp. Thank you. Alan.

Listening to your descriptions such as “skip the G” and “up and down” as supposed to reading the score is a neat way to quickly memorize the piece. Thanks for the episode, and would love to see more episodes like this!

This is wonderful! Thank you. I have had my harp for two weeks and a couple of days. I have never played before. This is one of the songs I have been wanting to learn (I learned how to play it on the lyre I received 2 months ago - key of C). I learned to read music as a child, playing the violin. It was absolutely normal to me to be able to both read music and play by ear (I truly didn't realize for the longest time that many people do not do this!) Yes, indeed, recognizing patterns truly helps. My greatest challenge right now is learning proper fingering technique so, of course, I'm always watching your magnificent fingers and will continue to do so.

I play it a bit differently, but this is the very first song I taught myself on harp by ear by listening to a recording I had. Learning by ear is actually the only way I play harp, or any instrument, really.

Thank you for this. It's interesting to hear you thinking out loud about how you go about this. I'm used to playing religiously from the score from piano and flute. However, I find reading and playing with harp is much more problematic - the score is not in direct view and adapting the gaze quickly from score to the hands playing at both near eye level or arms length is hard if one's peripheral vision and quick focussing ability deteriorates with age. So ancient learner me finds finds herself surprisingly practising more and more by ear and memory. Good for the brain too!

This was a good idea for an episode! I always thought playing by ear was kind of pointless, but now I’m realizing there could be some value in it

EDIT - Oops, you're quite correct! Apparently I can't count, haha :) Yes, minor iii not ii. Thanks for catching that!
