To be fair, in skyrim you actually need a metric fuckton of magicka to cast high tier spells without grinding enchantment for -100% spell cost gear which in itself is technically practicing magic a lot. I think the system in Skyrim is: "the spell itself is easy to learn, but requires a ton of mastery to actually cast it by yourself without the help of an entire arsenal of magic enhancing gear"

Yes, because nothing screams riveting gameplay quite as much as mindless grinding for hours on end. Game design wise there should be a good explanation for why your character can do what they can do and there should be a reasonable progression system (or sometimes it's just fine to completely ignore it and just say yolo). But it should never devolve into sucking the life out of everything.

This is why I love magicka magic system, or outward rune / shamanic circles above traditional hotkeyed spells, it's just so immersive to "craft" your spells every time, molding them to your needs with specific combinations of elements, remembering useful combinations that you normally use or thinking about particular ones for certain situations, and in the case of magicka, you even DO have a hotkey system for special spells on top of that, remember a specific combination then press spacebar / hotkey on 1-4 in magicka 2 Unironically the best magic system I have played
