There aren‘t 2 past tenses, there are three. And taking 2 words is too easy. The Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz (yes, that word really was used in official documents, it‘s the name of a former law) mashed up 7 words, and ‚umfahren‘ means both ‚drive around‘ and ‚hit while driving‘, depending on how you pronounce it. But at least, we do not have 43 ways of pronouncing ‚gh‘ 😛

@fgregerfeaxcwfeffece Жыл бұрын
But forget about the Plusquamperfekt. In many contexts you simply don't use that, so I assume it's not even taught. But now you know. In fact it's a bit like the bible, you would have been better off if I did not tell you about it. Now you will wonder about the edge cases where it would sound slightly more natural to use it. But an average your better off just ignoring it. Like misuse will raise weirdness by 20% while not using it will only raise weirdness by 1%. Also good applications are very easily avoided. It's legacy leftover in the language that probably made more sense 200 years ago.

My partner spent 7 years in Germany, after which he came back to our home country speaking flawless English and nothing beyond a few words in German. That's the first time I heard of that 20-second rule referenced here. Germans want to see you struggle in their language for a bit but after 20 seconds they take pity on you or are frustrated at hearing their own language so badly butchered, and switch to English.

There is hardly anything more German than being impatient and finding it exhausting to talk to someone in bad German. I say that as a German. I always feel overwhelmed when someone who doesn't speak German well wants to talk to me. Most of the time these are situations in which this person needs help in some way, asks for directions, etc. And it's much more efficient in terms of time if you have the conversation in another language. Also, I never know whether and how I should correct someone's pronunciation or grammar in German. On the one hand, I don't want to come across as rude, but on the other hand, the person also wants to learn German. That's a fine line.

Some stuff is wrong though, v is not always f, for example. Only in words/word particles of Germanic origin, like der Vogel or the prefix ver- (like in verboten, vergessen, etc.), in words of Latin/Romance origin it's v like in English, e.g. der Ventilator (fan, in medical jargon also a device that pushes air into someones lungs), die Vase (vase like in English). Also I can't think of a word where S is pronounced "Sh". Maybe in a loan word. The other part is true, though, it can be pronounced like English S or Z. This one gets a bit more complicated as there are some rules around it which is the reason why we have "s", "ss" and "ß" (the last one is not a B, but an S, its use is to make the vowel before it "long", where "ss" makes it "short. Long and short are not totally accurate here, because it can also change the vowel sound a little bit, but that is how we learn it in elementary school). Also Y is called Ypsilon, but is pronounced "ee" or "ü" (can't write that last one in English, sorry). In Ypsilon the Y is pronounced Ü. Some people always pronounce it Ü, but in spoken German you will hear both. It's a rare letter, though, anyways, mostly used in Greek words, like Xylophon or Dystopie (both "ü"), or in nicknames like Willy (where it's "ee", like you would say it in English). Sorry for the pedantry, I am German after all.

I could mention many examples, as the different sets of conjugations depending to the ending of each REGULAR verb (common in Romance languages) and the last language reform that make it more difficult to learn (at least I'm from the older school), but I give here two simple and easy examples, about letter pronunciations: - There are 5 letters or combinations with S sound: S (not between vowels), SS (between vowels), C (when before E and I), Ç, and SC. - X can have 5 sounds: CS, S, Z, SH, not pronounced (when before a C), and I excluded the SS because it wouldn't make sense without more explanations. So, Xena, the Warriors Princess, was known in Brazil as "Sheyna" - without the "e" sound from "y". 🙃

Brilliant as always :D Hamburg is still 8h away, so I'm hopeful for an Austrian show at some point!! 😊 And to answer Hogs question "What is he the master of? Burgers?" It's written with an ü, and Bürger means citizens. So it is literally the master of citizens 😂

I'm Dutch so you'd think that learning German should have been a piece of cake for me in high school...until you get to the more advanced grammar...I honestly still don't know how I struggled through the written exams 😂

the articles, the conjugations, tons of plural forms, + Nederlands has so much more international words. Studying Dutch did help me with reading in German, but speaking/writing is still difficult.

I'm 38 days into learning German. Even better is that some words are equal in Swedish, too, so I knew even more words before I even started. Like gift is poison in Swedish too (and also married lol).

Rinderkennzeichnungsfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz. To be fair, it's kinda hard figuring out what it's even trying to say XD There are just too many words packed into it. But Finnish isn't bad at that sort of thing either: Lentokonesuihkuturbiinimoottoriapumekaanikkoaliupseerioppilas (airplane jet turbine engine auxiliary mechanic non-commissioned officer student)
@jayATUK Жыл бұрын
@@foilarmsandhog Ah but the beauty of those long words is that there are no verbs at all 😁 Piling them up at the end works great for actual sentences though. "Ich verhielt mich so ruhig, dass man die Fliegen an der Wand hätte sollen gehen können hören." (I remained so calm that it should have been possible to be able to hear the flies on the wall walk (around).)

Actually, there are three past tenses: Präteritum (Imperfekt), Perfekt and Plusquamperfekt. Which isn't much compared to English: Simple Past (I went) Past Progressive (I was going) Present Perfect (I have gone) Present Perfect Progressive (I have been going) Past Perfect (I had gone) Past Perfect Progressive (I had been going)

Naja eigentlich sinds schon auch nur 3 formen - nur dass jede Form noch ein Progressive hat. 🤔

*flashback to Foil's livestream* Oh lad, please don't speak German! xD How convenient that this is right now as tomorrow will be a year since I took a train to Germany and saw you lads (and Miriam!) in the end in the process. :) You must have picked up on how happy I was there as it was my favorite meet and greet memory. I mean, just two days before I had a whole apartment just for myself in Marburg for five days, they gave me a free upgrade (there was construction work around it but it was fine to me as I was outside most of the day) so it felt like living there again. This year I gotta say I wasn't so happy even when I was there in April, some anxiety but I'm planning a trip around in November again and I gotta say, I feel like my anxiety has gotten a lot better nowadays. I'm not gonna go into details, my friends here around know how bad it went (Sammie, you ARE a sweetheart!

Old English was a Germanic language, hence the commonalities. 😊
@nathalieb1626 Жыл бұрын
@@daniellamcgee4251 Old English was placed in the Anglo Frisian group of Western Germanic languages. English got influenced by Germanic languages (Scandinavian, German and Dutch) and by the French (romanic) language because of the Normandic and the Brittany influences (Brittany = Bretagne, French region) through history. English has influences too from older anglo saxon languages and/or dialects.
