Must be Canadians..only them and marketers call spot shrimp .. Prawns.. 😂 Prawns don't live in the ocean any where in the world..

Great attitude after a terrible outing. Even several of the dungies were so white they looked like fresh molted soft shells. I'm not sure if that guy was a charter or your friend? The skills were lacking. On the washington side, we fish spots with much heavier pots and single and deep. Usually 220-350 feet of water with much heavier 35-40 lb pots. I typically bring in 3-500 with 4 pots in a 1 hour soak. Look for clouds of prawns on the bottom and pick a correct tide exchange. I don't understand why he only put one wrap around the pot puller, 3 is typical to let it come up without you pulling so hard and without risk of tangling if you let go.

Much appreciation for the tips and comment! I'm still very green when it comes to prawning. And thanks for watching. Cheers!

I like how the crab just sits patiently on your kitchen counter, probably smelled that garlic butter and was like "Hmm I can wait" Vanishing crab! could be stolen crab or your traps have pitched into a weird angle from the line being towed by the current, the doors stay open and they climb out. It's why your friend has those heavier traps which sit flatter on the bottom and are harder to pick up by current and sometimes you only need to soak a crab pot for an hour and it will have LOTS of crab, then you can move to another spot quickly and reset. Gotta get more spot prawns! but see if you can find a small reef or an area with more structure to prawn from. Early season isn't the easiest time but give it another month and the numbers should pick up. Awesome vid bud!

Took the kids out crabbing near there a few weeks ago for the first time and had our trap stolen. Sounds like it's quite common lately. Still want to give it another try but nervous to throw more brand new gear away.

Shoot, I hate to hear that. Especially when you want to include the kids too. I’ve been hearing a lot of that lately as well.

You should deep fry the spot prawn heads next time as you won’t be disappointed.
@BCFishingJournal3 жыл бұрын
Definitley would like to try that! I’ve heard good things about eating the heads.

Crab traps are often picked up by other people in the Vancouver area btw, probably explains the empty trap. I've dropped traps before for 30 minutes that has had 10+ crab in the harbour.

We thought that too, but wondered why the bait would be gone too? 🤷♂️
@Eric-zs6rd9 ай бұрын
@@BCFishingJournal The bait inside can also be picked clean by other bottom dwellers, sand fleas, small invertebrates, fish. The doors can also be pushed open by the currents with light frame pots like this

cut the spine and legs off the heads and try deep frying till its crisp. They do this at japanese restaurants that serve raw prawns.

I would love to try that! Do they bread it or anything? I’ve also been told to boil the full bodies and suck the head meat out.
@coho-kn1pc3 жыл бұрын
BC Fishing Journal no breading needed. As is with a dash of salt and pepper

the fish that came up in the trap is a blackfin sculpin, possibly a darkfin but they are very similar

Thanks so much for the info! We figured it was some sort of sculpin/bullhead.
