#iwanttobeaunicorn you bet Chuck its like you are narrating my own story CCNA networking concepts came so naturally and excitedly to me, while I was still naive in that , but man this Python is so hard to tame (right, those basics does not excite you), tried so many times and gave up, Davids SDN classes are also good where he explains open flow and changing industry trends, there is this one course on "coursera" also "programming for everybody" it is good but again it revolves around hello world and basics which you hate , definitely I want to try Davids approach on this one and yes we have to learn it together #networkrengineerswillkillpython

For me I started doing stuff that I hate doing by hand. I built a network mapper, and a program to map what is plugged in where: Point it at a switch/device with an arp table and it spits out a CSV with port number/IP/MAC address/Device type. Saved me SO MUCH time.
@NetworkChuck7 жыл бұрын
That's awesome!! Would you be able to share on GitHub?
@danielhimes90687 жыл бұрын
Bulding a map out of a CSV is over here github.com/GoreNetwork/Map-the-network Parse the CDP is here github.com/GoreNetwork/CDP-parser/blob/master/cdp_parse.py Some of my code is specific to my company (pulling domain names off the router names) for the moment, but I am working on putting together a lite version of it for a packet pushers. With this CDP parser and the map writer it should be easy to make one of your own though. Just do a for loop over a list of IPs, and pull the IPs in from CDP neighbors and add those to the list. Should be all you need to build a walker (One thing you might want to add is pull all the IP addresses from the router/switch/etc and have it not SSH back to any IPs you have already done.
@danielhimes90687 жыл бұрын
github.com/GoreNetwork/What-s-attached-to-switch-walk-though is the switch mapper It walks though the OUIs and applies those descriptions to the port where the MAC address is. Requires some work to get the MAC addresses populated, but works better for me than pulling the name of who has the OUI from the internet in some way.

I have no idea just how powerful and efficient it can be, but if you can streamline any part of the process to cut down on time and have assurance that it is doing everything you want it to, then you'd be crazy to not use that tool.

I know they both are two different areas however anytime you touch a production network for any automation, it will go through linux. I am talking about network at least more than 500 devices. Basic Linux + Python can get you way over the top then 40% of network engineers. I only started python from 2 years but having to know basic Linux really helped me to achieve intermediate automation in my network. PS: Network Engineer since 2009, Learning python since 2016 :)

The biggest help to my learning Python coding was to learn to write algorithms in plain English first. Learning the syntax and structures of any language is rudimentary, but to be able to understand what is actually happening in the code is paramount. This is why I am writing algorithms out in plain language first and then coding from there. If I run into trouble, it's almost always the case that my logic flow is flawed or incomplete. Flawed logic or just copying and pasting other people's code will not produce good programs. I think that this is the biggest obstacle for the beginning programmer.

I gotta give Python another shot. The funny thing is they say it's a lot easier to learn than C++, Java, or Visual Basic, and I learned those decently well as a high schooler or undergrad even, but I burned out and gave up while trying Python last year cause I found it boring and didn't have enough of a direct motivation to learn it (when I learned the basics of those other 3 languages eight years ago, I had this fantasy of being a game designer one day). The fact that I was distracted by other things, only did one five minute lesson or less a day, and was often not even fully sober when doing it (late at night lol) did not help, and even though I went through 3/4 of a Python course, I now retain essentially nothing from it.

My fear of learning python takes me back to my school days when I really wanted to become a programmer someday but after I found how hard it is to learn coding, I withdrew ny programming class and burried my dream to be a programmer. But now when I learn about how network engineer needs to learn python, my trauma all came back to me, I remember the horror of when I ran a code and a bunch of error filled my screen, I just have to find my long burried passion back again, learning programming is like a young guy attracted to a very beautiful girl, but that guy is broke and every time he tries to talk to the girl his fear of rejections because of his confidence already fall apart before he even start talking to her 😂, I think I have to focus on CCENT first and see if I can learn python someday, thank you for the video

#IWantToBeAUnicorn Hey Check! Thanks for the shout out in the video, I appreciate it ;-) I love the level of enthusiasm for your craft and the amount of support you want to give to your community, it really helps people like me out, whatever I can do to help you is well worth it. I appreciate you continuing to post the inspirational videos, they really give me that little extra push I need to get things done! Just scheduled my CCNA exam for the middle of January! I have been hitting the Cisco Press books hard since the end of October and am really looking forward to all of that hard work paying off :-) I took your advice from a video that you posted a couple months ago recommending GNS3 as a learning tool, and it has really payed off. I have always been more a tinkerer and a self learner than a structured lab person so GNS3's environment has really helped solidify the knowledge I am learning from the books and other learning material I have found. Since I have been using GNS3 for the last month (and am admittedly a little bit of a KZbin junky) I stumbled upon David Bombal's video series and found them to be a wealth of knowledge for learning other engineers strategies, thought processes, and network deployment approaches, I am a big fan of his style. Its funny that you mentioned having taken several Python courses and having been frustrated and not much better than where you left off, because I have been in that exact same boat trying various online Python courses through Coursera! I feel like none of these classes put the work you do into a really meaningful context, so having someone who has tailored a class for networks guys like us is really exciting and gives the knowledge that we may have learned from other classes a real grounding in something real and tangible, not to mention can be applied to your work immediately. As I have stated before in the comment sections of one of your prior videos. I previously worked as a network/central office technician for several large ISP/Telecom providers in Southeast Alaska, helping deploy/maintain various new (and sometimes very old networks). However, since Alaska is not always an easy place to live for a young married couple, and neither my wife or I were satisfied with our current jobs, we decided to move to back down the lower 48 to get a fresh start with all of the opportunities available down her. My wife has started a new job and I am planning on going back to college next fall for Computer Science (I dropped out almost 10 years ago, which is why I was dabbling in Python programming to get back into the swing of things). My passion and career for the last 6 years has been helping build and maintain different types of networks, but know I am ready to take my knowledge and experiences to the next level and be the person who plans out and engineers these networks! The CCNA is just my first steps on this long journey! Thanks again Chuck

I see the senior guys at my company who have been here 20-30 years who have evolved their skills from mainframes and bus cabling, to the modern network environment. Their best advice to be is to always be trying to learn and grow. With SDN and automation coming to the network realm at the same time I am trying to advance to an Engineering role I feel this Python training could be exactly the leg up I need to get ahead of the curve so I can provide the life I want for myself and my family. Ok, I don't really start from scratch as in France when you learn coding at school, you have some basics in networking (let's say an overview of different layers, static and dynamic routing protocols, dns, wifi, mainly tcp/ip4/ip6, reading snmp traps, vpn, basic security, …). I think the most frustrating thing about Python (and any programming language) is how long is takes to make anything worth being proud of. Within about four weeks I could make a pretty decent looking website in HTML and CSS. That is easy to pick up and run with it. But with Python, you can forget making anything worth bragging about for ages on end. Two years in, and I've been coding on and off with Python. I've produced nothing better than shell text RPGs and the most simplist Pygame semi completed games. I literally two years down the line, and I can only get a space ship to move across the screen with the keyboard and another eneny spaceship moving across the screen. Can't seem to make them interact with anything. Call it a millennial problem, but I just get burnt out too easily when I spend more time figuring out why my code doesn't work than actually creating anything productive. It doesn't help that I spend my time learning boring stuff like arrays and lists or whatever. It's too late to realise I don't actually like programming!

It may be that hard as you said, but you Know what? I didn't Know how to speak English, I didn't Know anything about networking, but as you can see I did learn English, cause I Just want to be one of the most skilled Networking Engineer in here ( Angola 🇦🇴) my country. I can still Remember the first time I decided that I was going to learn about Networking, as I just spoke portuguese I had to learn from a few People here on KZbin. There were just a few CCNA courses and It wasn't the usual CCNA course I mean It wasn't the (200-301) so I was just studying the old version because I wasn't aware of the New version, and when I heard about the new version I searched It here on KZbin, but unfortunately there wasn't any CCNA course which was free. I mean in portuguese there were just many In English, and The first one I saw It was a 200-301 Jeremih's IT lab CCNA course. I got so happy but I could not take that course at that time cause I couldn't understand English at all, not even a word. That made me make up my mind I decided that would learn English, and my main goal was just understanding, so that I could take the course. I didn't even care about communicating I just wanted to understand, because I wanted to study CCNA. As I was learning English I used to visit KZbin channels to see If I was learning English. It was pretty hard for me cause at the beginning I could not Understand many of you, so I got sad and very angry. So then when I started Understanding It was Epic I Still remember this Day, It was here on KZbin I was watching to A J hoge speech He's been my coach for so long. He's an English teacher I learned so many things from Him he doesn't even know, nor even has an Idea. In this very day I saw David Bombal's CCNA videos, when I was watching the first one I got suprised and amazed cause I was Understanding him at all. I couldn't believe It so I started to dig deep into the Networking world.Then I have met you #Networkchuck, so I can now talk about Networking although I'm not done studying CCNA yet but My life has been turnning around because of Networking. I cannot stop now I had to learn English In order to learn IT stuff It wasn't easy but I made It.David Bombal said It would change my Life and I can Feel It now, It is chaging, that is why python is not going to stop me from being a great Networking Engineer. Iam willing to do what It takes for being dangerous in Networking, you said you'd teach me python so I could be dangerous do you remember that Chuck? You, David Bombal and Jeremih It Lab you are the Best so you have taught me alot of things In IT I'm so greatful for that, thank you all and as David would say I want to wish you all the very Best thank you so much.

Someone please answer me While working as a newtwork technician or Administrator by cisco certifications , Will you need to keep your eyes all the day or screen like programmers ? is it like that you will be dealing most of your time with Cables and Switches rather than Computer screen ? these are vital questions for me 😊

#IWantToBeAUnicorn Chuck & David Bombal are channels that are "startup", but are with contents that are for "pro's" already. Hopefully I win this to supplement my studies to be similar to what you are now, Chuck! CCNA Collaboration + CCNA R&S (with Python/SDN skills) would be a killer!

I'm taking a CS1050 course (Java) at a local university now and yep, it is SO EFFING HARD!! :( I'm gonna stick it out though. Everyone tells me that once you can get OOP down, you can do other languages much easier.
@Ali-lm7uw6 жыл бұрын
Start with Python and then you can move on to Java. Java is the not an easy language to start off with.

Yes, that's what I did. I read Learn Python The Hard Way and did some online courses (Udacity, Codeacademy, etc.). Definitely helped with the basics!

python is one of the easiest languages out there so i was curious why you made a video with this title. then I watched the beginning and I got you. it's not that python is hard but learning _any_ programming language can be quite boring at first. but not if you are experimenting from the start. so maybe you should change the title... or maybe not! (it did make me watch after all!) And by the way: anyone wanting to get into Python should definitely check out corey shafer and tech with tim - great channels for python (and more)

I am 19 and studying IT in Uni. Should I take CCNA training? I currently feel more inclined towards the software side of things like AI and Big data. Would going through a CCNA training course and getting the certification help me in any way? (I went through the syllabus and it seems interesting)

For us who can program it is *THAT* easy but for him I'd cut him some slack lol. Who knows he might git gud at it and even try the usual html/css/jscript with php/python with some SQL.

Have been hearing a lot about Python being integrated in the networking field and have heard of all the many advantages it can provide. Hearing this from you has solidified my interest in pursing this skillset and to become noticed in at my company that I work for in the pursuit for a role as a network engineer. Programming has always been a huge hurdle of my so I'd like to take advantage of any opportunity to understand and master this language. #IWantToBeAUnicorn

I started with Java which I managed to build a GUI but damn it was so complicated! Then I went with python and felt like a walk in the park
@GreatClickbait3 жыл бұрын
I also built a GUI as well although it was C++ and I agree Python is the easiest thing in the world. The only way to make it easier is to have someone else do it or have a machine code its own programs. And unlike this guy is saying there are no "hello world courses". If anyone needs a course on typing "print("hello world")" than they just don't care enough because somehow they were able to type to search for youtube videos on becoming a programmer but unable to type "print("hello world")"

Sir please help, DO WE NEED TO KNOW PYTHON FOR CCNP ENCOR AND ENARSI COURSE
@robotinthebrain6 жыл бұрын
It’s not the logic that is hard but the programming grammar that is not existing. It’s not like learning English or French or Russian, there we have alphabet, grammatical rules, orthographical rules, but in programing language we have to litteraly just learn snatches of code and just figure out if it is working or not. So far for doing little scripts is doable. But when it comes to modular object oriented programming, omg ! Here trouble starts...

#IWantToBeAUnicorn I've been trying to learn Python for 3 months now! It's super tough to get into the nitty gritty. I start my intro to networking course in January at school and I'd love this leg up in this course because most of my degree depends on it! Love the vids Chuck! Thanks for the opportunity! Have a great Thanksgiving!
