I have been learning Italian for the last year. I thought how can I learn two languages at once, and as I can already mostly understand Italian I decided to learn Spanish for Italians in Duo Linguo. But now I keep saying a lot of Spanish words like I would say them in Italian. So I joked to a friend that if ever I am able to speak Spanish I'm going to do so in an Italian accent. And my accent is going to be even funnier as I speak Australian English with an Australian accent ... As I am Australian ...

I am learning over 30 languages at the same time, including Norse and Gothic and Icelandic and Faroese and Dutch and Norwegian and Danish and Welsh and Breton and Cornish and Swedish and French and OldEnglish and Latin and Occitan and FornSwenska and Galician and Italian and Portuguese and Slovene and Hungarian and Latvian and Gallo and Latgalian and Irish and Manx and Gaelic and Finnish and Estonian and Mirandese and Esperanto and Venetian and Pretarolo and Sicilian and Catalan and Guernsey and Walloon and all other Norse / Germanic / Nordic / Celtic / Italic aka Italian-based languages and the other French-based languages (that are not officially recognized as a language yet tho they are different languages with different spelling rules) and a few others, but I try to learn the native accents for each target language by singing along with the native singer’s voice in the background and learning many songs with lyrics in those languages, which helps with developing the right native accents - I can also sing a few songs in Russian and a song in a Turkic language in which I also developed a good native accent by singing along with natives’ voices in the background, so it’s one of my favorite language learning techniques, together with the spaced repetition method and watching every video with subtitles in the target languages, and, the Germanic languages are the easiest languages ever created, with words that can be easily memorized, though most Celtic languages and the Latin languages and Slovene are also easy, compared to most other languages!

By the way, after finishing watching the video, I have to say that, it is better to learn as many target languages as one can handle at the same time, as it saves many years and it’s way more fun, as one isn’t going to confuse similar words once one learns each word automatically and permanently, by seeing each word multiple times over a longer period of time aka the spaced repetition method, so, confusing similar words usually only occurs at the beginning in very similar languages - personally, I tend to watch videos with two or three subtitles at the same time, learning the words in two or three or even four languages at the same time, like, literally at the same time, and I also spend a lot of time on the Wkp dictionary and on G translate looking at words translated in multiple target languages from English or translating lists or words and even individual words from English to all other target languages that are already on G translate, and also translating from Icelandic or Dutch or Norwegian etc to other languages, as I already have an advanced level in these three newer target languages, at least vocab-wise, while in Spanish I am native speaker level and in English I am writer level, so if the videos are in these two languages with hardcoded subtitles in another target language I can also watch them with an extra subtitle in another target language, for example, today I watched every video with Faroese subtitles, and a few days ago I watched the videos with Danish subtitles etc, so I could learn new words in multiple languages at the same time using this method, which saves a lot of time, so, it is a very efficient language learning technique, plus I only choose pretty languages that are naturally easy (mostly category 1 to category 3 languages) and naturally fun to learn, and I focus mostly on the prettiest such as the Norse / Germanic / Nordic languages (which are all category 1 languages and the easiest to learn) and the Celtic languages, including Welsh and Breton and Cornish and Manx (which are also category 1 languages) and also learning the other pretty languages on the side, including Gaelic and Irish (which are category 3 languages, at least spelling-wise, though most words are easy to memorize) and the Latin languages (am learning only the Latin languages aka the languages that have the typical Latin word endings / letter combinations / sounds etc which are the elements that truly determine the type of language, so I am not learning the group of languages that haven’t been accurately classified in their own category yet, which are in fact at least category 4 languages, and am only learning the Italian-based languages and the Portuguese-based languages and the French-based languages and the Catalan-based languages and the Spanish-based languages and Esperanto, which are category 1 languages, like all Norse / Germanic languages and most Celtic languages, plus trying to improve my Spanish too, as I am already fluent in Spanish, being native speaker level, but I want to be writer level, as I am in English) and the few category 2 languages like Latvian and Hungarian and Latgalian and Finnish and Estonian which also have words that are easy to learn, so I am learning the languages that are from category 1 to category 3, and also started learning some Russian which is category 5 as it has a different alphabet tho most of its words are easy to learn, kinda like Slovene which is a category 1 language, and overall Russian would be more category 3 when it comes to words, with easy category 1 pronunciation, so I decided to learn it as I like some songs with lyrics in Russian, plus I already knew the Cyrillic alphabet, though I cannot read the words fast like I can read words written in the Latin alphabet, but it’s getting easier as I learn the actual words automatically, and I am learning it on the side, while learning Slovene, as most words are the same or very close, which makes it easier to remember the Russian word, and usually I don’t learn the languages that are category 4 to category 10, except for a few words maybe, such as the words that are pretty that I come across, and the food related terms, which I have to learn if I ever travel to those lands, so that I can read the labels, and, I can already understand more than half of my target languages after only learning languages on my own for less than two years, so a few years from now I shall be fluent in multiple target languages and I shall be able to understand most of my target languages!

I am a full-time learner, so I can spend all day learning new words and watching videos with subtitles in target languages in which I have at least an intermediate level, and I tend to alternate between active learning / active revising (watching vocab videos / analyzing song lyrics / reading declensions etc) and passive learning / passive revising (watching videos with subtitles or re-listening to songs with lyrics in target languages that I already know) usually - I tend to focus mostly on about 10 target languages, so I prioritize those the most, learning new words in those languages regularly and revising previously learnt words in those languages more often, while learning the others on the side, so in the others I learn new words more irregularly / not on a regular basis, so, when I will start prioritizing those other languages more I will already be used to things such as the pronunciation rules and the basic vocab (like pronouns and most used verbs / food terms / nouns and prepositions and adverbs of time and conjunctions etc) and the different sounds, as they have a lot of time to really sink in, because I started learning them on the side in the first year of learning, so I can already tell that they don’t seem so foreign to me anymore, after a few spaced repetitions, even though there were more months or more weeks between those spaced repetitions, so I feel this way of learning languages really works for me, plus it makes the learning process more fun, as there’s always something new to see and discover, like, a new pretty word with different spelling rules and aspect or a new grammar rule or a cool new letter etc!

That is really cool, both languages feel a bit like "singing" to me and that is the reason why I actually chose to learn them. To this day, Swedish is still my favorite language :)

However, some of the info is not correct, for example, the Thracian-Aslavic language that was incorrectly classified as a Latin languages (just because many of the words were modified from Latin-based words, which all other European languages also have) is not a Latin language, since it doesn’t sound or look Latin as it doesn’t have the typical Latin word endings and letter combinations and sounds, and, it’s in fact mostly Slavic-based and Turkic, with most typical Slavic verb / noun / adjective endings for the conjugated form (no actual Latin language has Slavic word endings like ule / ish / ash / ishi / ashi / tsi / ch / ts / chi etc that would be in so many conjugated verbs and other words) and vowel sounds, so it should be in its own category with the other languages that are based on it that are spoken in Greece and Croatia etc, as it has been incorrectly classified due to being an unknown language that hasn’t been analyzed properly and compared to the words from the languages spoken in surrounding countries, plus it is a general rule that a language is usually modified into a language that is more similar to the languages spoken in surroundings regions, as each language creator first looked at the words from the languages that were spoken in the neighbouring countries before modifying the spelling rules of previous languages and creating a new language, so languages spoken in regions that are close together tend to be very similar in most ways - besides, most newer European languages were made by modifying Latin words, anyway, including Germanic languages and Slavic languages and Celtic languages, so they all have more cognates with Latin than ppl can imagine, but they are usually used with different meanings, and some of them have been modified a lot by the creators of the newer languages, so they aren’t easy to recognise anymore, though the international words like information and complete and transparent etc are in each European language in forms that are very similar, and English has more words modified from a Latin-based word than Latin languages as English has more words than any other languages and mostly technical and scientific words that are usually Latin-based, so the source of the words does not determine the type of language, and it is in fact the word endings and the letter combinations and the spelling rules and the intonations and the pronunciation rules and the sounds and the overall aspect and vibe that the language gives off that truly determine its type!

Like most of us I started off learning English as my first foreign language (after my mother tongue German), then school French, later Spanish at university and since living in Spain also Valencian (Catalán) and some Dutch. I'm trying to keep up with the other languages, mainly French but I find it difficult at times to work on several languages at the same time.

Entendo perfeitamente o catalão através de outros idiomas latinos ! Quando comecei a ler e ouvir o catalão.... tive facilidade. Isso vale para o occitano também. Já o idioma romeno é o mesma situação do catalão e do occitano... mas também por causa dos idiomas eslavos... especialmente o russo. Idiomas germânicos... entendo parte do alemão e do holandês (e também algo dos idiomas escandinavos) através do inglês. Inglês e alemão são os idiomas germânicos que sei melhor.

Soy aficionado de los idiomas. Soy nativo en inglés, puedo funcionar a un nivél de C2 en japonés (llevo 35 años viviendo aquí). He tomado DELE nivél Intermedio B2, Goethe-Zertifikat B2, y para el Chino, que estudio desde MUCHOS años, alcanzo B2 (HSK4). Aunque tenga DELF A2 en francés, supongo que ya tengo un nivel más alto porque tomé el exámen hace muchos años. La mejor manera para averiguar el nivél es tomar un exámen basado en CEFR.

When I was learning to speak Spanish, which is my third (and last) native language but I was just an overhearer, I mixed it up all the time with French, my second. I got "vendrá" mixed up, because French "viendra" is Spanish "vendrá" and French "vendra" is Spanish "venderá". I still say "corriel" ("courriel" in French) because "correo electrónico" is too long. But "pourriel" doesn't go well into Spanish because the 'd' in "podrido" messes up the blend. I've talked about buying henna de una vepecista (the acronym VPC makes equally good sense in French and Spanish). And I would totally say "oriñal" and explain que es una especie de ciervo.

Te entiendo perfectamente, en mi experiencia se mezcla un poco al principio, pero si usas o practicas ambas lenguas a menudo no tendría que haber mucho problema. Sería más "peligroso" mezclar las dos lenguas si dejaras de usar el español y te dedicaras solo al francés, por ejemplo

I don't know about Catalan but Spanish and Italian are very different. I don't speak any of these languages but I can understand them and I can distinguish them from the one word. And Portuguese too. They are different but they are much more similar than Ukrainian and Russian. So I would like to understand why do people think that it is the same here. In Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Catalan, you can understand each other because they share almost similar vocabular even if pronunciation is different. And Russian is based on Bulgarian that is South Slavic language group and has completely different prinunciation from Ukrainian. Even if they have stolen a lot of Ukrainian vocabular, they sound very different. Ukrainian is similar to Czech and Slovak by pronunciation and has similar vocabular to the Western Slavic group. I guess, Muscovites has copied their pronunciation from Belarusian language because sometimes they sound just the same but vocabular is still very different. Muscovites ("Russians") don't understand any Ukrainian, any Belarusian. Thet just payed for the place in Eastern Slavic group. They must be Far Eastern Slavic group with Southern base. Eastern because of their location and their very Eastern accent. And better if they turn back to their own language. They are Ugro-Finns who have shame of their origin and wanted to be Slavs and picked up that Bulgarian dialect and they used for their politic and rewrited history because as you know the winner writes history. They occupated Rus with the aid of their ally - Mongolo-Tatars (Golden Hord). And they just renamed their country from Muscovia to Russia that in Greek languave means Rus.

What about Romanian? It has lots of Slavic influence. And yes, English does have a huge influence from French, when I was studying Linguistics a teacher told us 40% of the vocabulary in English comes from French influence. As a speaker of Catalan and Spanish as mother tongues, I did not struggle with French vocabulary so much, but pronunciation was indeed challenging to learn :O

French is a romance language because it developed from Latin, English doesn't. Languages are not categorize like that because someone thought they looked pretty similar, but because they emerged and developed from the same language, thus, English can't be a romance language. French is considered a romance language because it developed from Latin. The thing is they had so much germanic influence, but they're still romance. English developed from Proto-Germanic. The thing is they had so much French and Latin influence, but they're still germanic. you get it now?
