My wife heard what I was watching and came to see. She realized that on our trip to Whistler in 2015 from Texas, it was Jo that she and her friends took 3 days of lessons from. She has always talks about how much she learned and what a good instructor Jo is.

Nice vid, I got some more useful tips to help me, especially the tip about pushing the knees out rather than forward. One approach I found helps with most skills is that sometimes you can improve the technique by simply changing the way you think about doing the skill, because everyone thinks about things differently. In the case of bunny hops and manuals, most instructions tell you to go down and then to "push yourself back" on the bike. I found that simply changing my thinking to "push the bike out in front of me" changed the way I carried out the movement significantly enough to enable me to do the manual better. It is a change in mindset rather than technique because pushing the bike in front of you is the same as pushing yourself out the back of the bike, just a different way of thinking about it. Essentially a similar motion as applied to some drop offs.
@lkb3rd
@lkb3rd 2 жыл бұрын
I do the same thing, I lower down, and "scoot" the bike forward quickly, timed with the unloading of the front. Same exact movement, but it makes more sense in my head.
@joncov
@joncov Жыл бұрын
2 hints: 1. a preemptive forward movement helps to lift a wheel despite instructor's comments, you can find vids on yt proving it - the physics behind this is simple: acceleration -> force -> energy 2. the geometry of bike related to rider's posture is not important but critical, and often CANNOT be overcome by any skills I would recommend you find and rent a 24" bike with minimal BB drop and CS length, or at least a 26" with BB drop < 30 mm and CS length < 390mm: the lower the values the better, Skills and confidence acquired will improve big mtb riding

@OktaFierce 3 жыл бұрын
1 Get the shortest possible stem and even narrower bars if necessary, this will let you go back further. 2 You need to drop to load the bike then go back and down with your head up BUT its all in the feet, you need to be fully committing to kicking the bike forward out from under you with your feet, this will loop the bike like crazy when you do it right. Get ready with the back brake.
@vivek_v
@vivek_v 3 жыл бұрын
High rise bars will also help, but the most helpful tuning tip is to set your suspension extremely firm, especially if you have a low front end because less sag will raise it, and for obvious reasons, it will make the manual easier as suspension won't waste as much energy

i think this is so far the video that taught me the most. the most important part for me was the preload to stay balanced and to push it vertical down and not to the front and with power, the rest kind of almost happens automaticaly. managed to roll for couple meters (now i need to get the balance part right) after stagnating like Yuka for months. im almost there THX!

I found it a lot easier to learn wheelies because I could find the tipping point by looping out and falling backwards to my feet, but looping out is much harder with manuals because its hard to get your feet off the pedals without crashing. I feel like Ive learned the manual movement but I cant get my brain to commit to a full manual, I think building a manual machine is needed for me so I can safely find the tipping point without crashing.

Try to manual in a parking lot with a downhill. Each time you manual, count the number of parking spaces that you go and try to go further each time. If you practice a lot and feel like you aren't improving, take a break for a few days and then try again

Something that I find helps is to not only drop your heels but push the bike away from you using your legs. Works for me. Just make sure you control the back brake because it can make you possibly loop out. Also use flat pedals and go on grass and practice going too far and jumping off the back of your bike. It will probably make you realise that you have to go very far to loop out and should boots your confidence and help you to pull more. Ia definitely not an expert or anything though so take what I say with a fair pinch of salt. Also Ia not sure why i have written this much lmao

That’s awesome that you got Jo to give you tips! Manual progression takes a long time but you’ll get it. This year I spent so many hours practicing, but it’s rewarding. If you’re looking for tips on how to get your wheel up a little higher and longer I made a tutorial on my channel- kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6TZhJZ6nceKf7M Also as a shorter rider, we are at slightly a disadvantage. We have to make a more dramatic movement and to reach the “balance point” to hold the manual we have to get our wheel even higher! Which is scary and takes a lot of effort. It’s possible though. I practiced 5 times a week for 15 min and after 4 -5 months I started to be able to hold it for 20 ft +. Good luck Yuka!
