I bought the A7RV when it was released. I am very happy, although it cost this retiree dearly, budget wise. I am 70, have shaky hands and wear glasses. The camera's AF is a joy to use and makes my life so much easier. The A7RV has made me a lazy photographer, though. I realized that shots taken in auto mode are quite impressive. In post, all I do, most of the time, is play with contrast and brightness, for the most part. This camera is incredible. I don't do video much so, this camera is perfect.

If you are photo-centric and can afford it, then the A7R V is an amazing camera. For travel/hobbyists, consider the smaller-body A7CR. For a more general purpose/hybrid travel camera, get the A7C II - it is basically a travel version of the A7IV plus AI tracking. I got the A7R V for serious hobby landscape/portrait photos. I don't normally shoot a lot of video - I'm pretty happy with my iPhone for most video shots. My iPhone is actually why I got the A7R V. Why? Because I need a camera that is a compelling step up from the iPhone. The iPhone's killer feature is that I always have it with me and it is "good enough" for most situations. I need a big camera that justifies getting out all the gear and lugging it around - the A7R V is that camera to me.

Scenes are planned and done in segments for video and later put together and color graded. I would also buy an FX3 primarily for video, because its low light capabilities are outstanding (and unmatched, my business partner has one) and shutter angle will be coming to the Fx30 and Fx3 sometime in September 2024. In the Fx3 and Fx30, Cine EI makes getting proper exposure super easy and the body has a fan in it for super hot weather. I do feel the A7V will be the best hybrid when it comes out.

I have A7Cii , I mainly love to capture video. I am just getting ready to exchange it for A7R5, I thought that R5 is capable to produce much better video due to the large sensor. But you are saying that A7Cii is better in video. I am confused??
@learningcameras6 ай бұрын
@@IRFAN-po5sz The A7CII actually has the same sensor size so the only sensor difference with the A7RV is more pixels and more pixels is usually a bad thing for video. More pixels mean slower readout speeds (more rolling shutter) and usually less detail because the camera can't oversample all of those pixels without stressing the processor. So if you are shooting 4k24, the A7CII will actually look better since it oversamples the entire 7k sensor while the A7RV uses a lesser quality pixel bin. However, the A7CII will overheat faster, has more of a crop in 4k60, doesn't have an amazing screen or viewfinder, and doesn't have hardware features like dual CFexpress cards so the A7RV is better hardware even though it does have some limitations for video. Think a7Rv is great. Bought one 2 weeks ago - lovely files, pretty good ergonomics too. Multi screen and hi-res EVF both worthy upgrades vs earlier bodies and my excellent a7iv - which I'm now going to be selling. 6 wks ago I bought the very capable a9iii after finally deciding that it made no sense to buy an a1 given better performance in most respects of a9iii. It was buying an a9iii that convinced me a partner of an a7Rv made perfect sense, adding to my video centric FX3. So I see a 3-body line up that can all do stills and video (with diff strengths and capabilities) is a great trio - it can also be used for multi-cam shoots too. The a1 and rumoured a1mk ii is still only one so say 'do it all' body. But expensive and limited as it can only shoot one subject, with one lens at any one time. I'm now thinking that multiple bodies, rigged as needed, gives greater choice, flexibility, speed and a degree of redundancy. Anyway that's my current thinking - right 'specialist' tool for the right job.

Even though I don’t plan to replace my rV anytime soon, I was happy to see your post, which confirms my decision to buy it about a year and a half ago (😂). I love it for all the reasons you mentioned. Other things: with a CFexpress A card it processes faster than the Riv and previous version 3 cameras - so switching from photos to video is not as much a problem (because of slow buffering) for what I do. The IBIS is fantastic. One thing I noticed that while focusing is amazing, my old A9 does a little better with birds in flight that are flying toward the camera. Another negative, I feel the rV screen is more vulnerable (I posted in a live stream you had a while back about that). BTW, if you are on a budget the a6700 seems to behave similarly to the A7rV - it is a cropped sensor version of it. It’s great for video too, though IBIS is not as good, and I don’t like the flip out screen. The new smaller cameras are so much better than the old ones. Another positive for A7rV, there were firmware updates to three zoom lenses - the original 70-200, the 100-400 and the 200-600 specifically for performance on the A7rV, which made me happy.
@learningcameras6 ай бұрын
Agreed although what I like about the A7RV is you don't HAVE to flip out the screen...you can still keep it in the camera and just tilt it which makes it less vulnerable and you can flip it closed so it doesn't get scratched when moving around in your back or hanging on a strap.

Its not as much of im Importance, but I rather: Sell my RM3 replace it by a RM5. Or buy annother FX3. I would only use the RM3 for interviews on a tripod. Thus 8K could be interesting, to make Reels out oft 16 by 9 content. But very important: Can I mix both codecs? Without any issues? I the RM5 a bad Video Camera? Maybe better get an 7IV instead. I have no clue how "bad" the RM5 is in terms of Video. Lets say on a highend level comparison. Appreciate your reply a lot :)
@learningcameras6 ай бұрын
So yes, the A7RV is a great 2nd cam to the FX3 for video because it does match well plus you have the 8k option or the ability to do a 1.5x S35 crop which still gives you oversampled 4k 10bit video. The RM5 will also get you the same codecs without an issue. The only potential issue on the A7RV is that it does have a small crop factor with 4k60 and the camera doesn't fully oversample in regular full frame 4k24 where the A7IV can oversample 4k24. But the A7IV has more of a crop in 4k60 so a tradeoff, can't shoot 8k, and doesn't have the same hardware features. If you want the most detail from the A7RV, you just need to shoot in the S35 crop modes where the camera can oversample

The Nikon Z8 is technically the better camera when it comes to specs, especially if you need video. However, there is more than just the body and that's where Sony has the advantage with more lenses and wider support since so many people are using these newer cameras. I tend to prefer the A7RV slightly when it comes to photography and the autofocus is better, but the Nikon is still faster with frame rates and has a fast sensor so there isn't a shutter mechanism to wear out and you can shoot completely silent. If you need fast frame rates, silent shooting, or video, the Z8 is better, otherwise I'd pick the A7RV because of the lens selection. You do get a free flash with the Sony right now: bhpho.to/4eMdk5x

In video, the A7IV will be better because it oversamples 7k to get 4k video. The A7RV actually has too much resolution so it can't oversample that many pixels so even though it's a better photo camera, it lowers the amount of detail you can get. So I agree with you for video, no question 60mp is bad for video for a few reasons. The problem is that it's the best hybrid camera Sony has right now under $6k. I was hoping the A9III would be the 24-33mp camera with amazing video and amazing photo, but Sony decided to go global shutter with that which has advantages with frame rates and no rolling shutter but didn't help the quality and greatly increased the price. I wouldn't be surprised if you have to wait over a year on the A7V

Have you checked the rolling shutter performance with the IBIS settings maxed out, a stabilized lens, and the APS-C crop? I’d be interested to know if you see an improvement in that situation. I’ve rented an S5IIx this week to try before I potentially buy, and I was very impressed to see the rolling shutter practically disappear once I applied the recent firmware update and used open-gate APS-C mode with the IBIS maxed out along with a stabilized lens. Edit: I just saw that you also owned an S5IIx. If you still own it then you really should revisit it with the new firmware. It would actually make for a great video on your channel. The improvements are massive compared to the S5II I rented last year.
@learningcameras7 ай бұрын
With ibis it's usable handheld but any fast pans and you'll see rolling shutter. If you use the APSC crop modes, this becomes more like other cameras so you'll still see rolling shutter but it's a tolerable level. Haven't tried the new S5IIX firmware yet so I definitely will do that!

I almost bought the A7RV, the super high rolling shutter didnt do it for me because it was almost the same as the A7RIV so i waited and almost bought it like 3 times, i ended up being more happy because a global shutter was what i wanted all along. If i could i would buy this a7RV also, this high MP is just awesome for almost everything, the only issue is that i do more sports.
@learningcameras7 ай бұрын
Yeah, if you do more sports, rolling shutter could be an issue. Sony has gone very Niche with their cameras lately so they have a camera for everyone, but no 1 camera that does everything well except maybe the super expensive and somewhat aging A1. So the A9III (also crazy expensive) is 10x better than anything else for speed but suffers with quality, the A7RV is the best for dynamic range/quality but is slow, and the SIII/FX3 is the best for low light/high speed video but is crazy low resolution. Nikon & Canon have gone for more of the let's make 1 camera do everything well theme

Hi Dan, many thanks for the overview on the A7rV. I am primarily a 4k60 video guy, and I like the new AI autofocus system in this camera. I do not shoot slow motion video at all, but the 4K60 is my preferred frame rate and resolution for my video work. My question here is do you feel that the 4k60 on this camera is clean and sharp, and is the “rolling shutter” in the 4k60 mode too much, or is it negligible and usable? Keep in mind that I am not concerned with the slight crop that 4k60 has. Many thanks for your input. BTW, unlike some, I do not like the blur of 24fps at all. I prefer the immediacy and vibrancy of 60fps. Just thought I’d throw that in-lol.😊👍
@learningcameras7 ай бұрын
Hey! So 4k60 on this actually looks really good and is clean and sharp BECAUSE of the crop. Downside of the crop is it's tough to get a super wide angle shot and it's not the full frame look, but the upside is it allows the camera to handle the crazy amount of pixels and maintain a clean sharp image. Rolling shutter is actually improved if you go to the crop modes on the A7RV, it's only in full frame where it can be a bit of an issue when shooting handheld with a lot of movement or doing fast pans. In the crop modes it's controlled enough that you should be good with it

Great rundown Dan, thanks! I’ve enjoyed watching your brand/gear journey over the years… I’m currently with an A7iv and looking seriously at stepping up to the A7RV or stepping down to the Fuji X… same reason, namely reach. The Crop mode on the A7R5 still renders 26mp and affords a serious reach boost. I agree with your thoughts on the sensor as well. 90% of photos taken via Sony platforms that give me that “Wow” factor are the RV or RIII… even the colors on the A7R5 I tend to pick over the Nikons (to my extreme surprise). Great to have great choices. The X-H2 is the only other contender. I’ve bought all my children high-end used Finepix bridge cameras and just love the JPEGs their 20mp cameras render… I just need to rent a Fuji and see if I enjoy it… I haven’t really enjoyed the A7iv for some reason… it’s everything I need, but I don’t like shooting with it for some reason (LOVE my 50-400 though!). I honestly don't think the A9III is better for flash in the real world unless you NEED faster shutter speeds with flash so keep that in mind. Sure, you don't have a flash sync speed but the higher ISO means you need to push shutter much more to get the same exposure and eventually you will hit the limit of the strobe for maximum output because most strobes can't shoot full power faster than 1/1000sec. You get a little more room on the A9III but the minimum ISO shift to 250 cancels out some of the gains. But yeah, Sony has gone very specific with it's cameras lately so there isn't 1 camera that's great for a bunch of stuff

I have sold my SONY A7 IV and purchased a Sony A7R V and the complaint I have is the monitor screen. Sony tech specs rate the screen as being 2,095,104 DOTS and that is meaningless to me and I Imagin pretty well everyone else in 2024. The DOT reading is from forty years ago, but Sony and other camera manufactures use the DOT system because 2,095,104 DOTS sounds impressive however it really means you can’t see the subject matter in bright light on the monitor screen. Cameras with low quality monitor screens are not professional cameras. I can go out in the bright sunlight with my iPhone 15 Pro Max and take a photograph and there is no loss to quality on the screen, I paid far less for the iPhone than the A7R V. The way I deal with this monitor screen issue is to use a Accsoon SeeMo 4K camera monitor device with my iPhone 15 Pro Max that displays 2,000 NITS outdoors. Why should we pay thousands of dollars for cameras with monitor screens that are not viewable in bright light? I do a lot of focus stacking and I need a screen that I can see everything in the shot I am taking using the monitor screen. Most people use their monitor screens for setting up their shots not a viewfinder. The reason Sony and other camera manufacture get away with putting low end monitor screens is that KZbin and other camera reviewers never talk about the camera poor quality monitor screens. Your frightened to make any negative comments because you may not get to do a pre-release review of the manufactures latest new camera or miss out on free trip paid by Sony or whoever. Reviews often make their disclaimer at the beginning of their video review and then some reviewers say this is an honest review but should add except for the monitor screen, the monitor screen a very import part of the camera. Camera manufactures need to improve their camera monitor screens and provide the technical information about the screen in NITS given its 2024.

I have this camera and Nikon Z8 and pretty well set both up to work in same manner . I shoot events ,portraits and a bit of sports . The Sony wins for dynamic range and screen as the Sony can tilt and also flip but that’s the end . The Nikon is the camera I pick up the most ,the latency ,lack of black outs and insane speed clearly put it ahead of the Sony . Regardless of what you are told the Sony lackluster white balance and color science is real . With the Nikon I consistently make do with jpegs when I don’t feel like or need to do all the editing or when I have to deliver on the go ,I can’t try that with the Sony . The Nikon feels waybettter in the hands and is equally a great option for every kind of photography . I can’t even contemplate going to the football matches with the Sony . If you are invested in Sony or Nikon stay in the system you already have the lenses but if you are purely looking at both from neutral standpoint,the Nikon trumps the Sony . Oh I forgot the video ,that’s not even close. I will eventually sell the A7rv this summer .

I have the 50mm F1.2 for Nikon, Sony, & Canon and the Nikon version is just absolutely crazy how much heavier and larger that is. Sony has a massive head start with lenses but they seem to still be releasing at a much faster pace plus you have Tamron and Sigma making tons of extra options

Yeah, even the A1 is limited to 10fps in mechanical shutter. There is something about the physical design of Sony's shutters that limits the shooting speeds and for whatever reason, the don't allow faster E-shutter speeds on this camera although I'm not sure that would be too useful because the rolling shutter is pretty intense on this. In the next version, I think they will still be limited in mechanical shutter but scan speeds should be much faster so they might go much faster in electronic shutter

I work for a small marketing agency and I do the photos. I also freelance as a photographer on the side. I found an a7rV used at my local shop. Very low shutter count and I got it super cheap especially after trading my old a7iii. Any way, after using it for almost a year now I realized that 61mp is defentily overkill. even tho I do photography full time, 99% of the time the content just gets shared via the internet and I have to compress and shrink it anyway. The Workflow for this is also insande, moving these raw files around and working on them takes a toll on PC. not to mention having to back up these giant files. I end up having to shoot smaller files, which ends up being close to what my a7iii was shooting in the first place. The the multi screen is actually the only thing keeping me from downgrading to like an a7iv or a7cii. My only advice is When looking around for a camera, think about what you do and what you're looking for. You might realize that the camera you actually need is cheaper. more convenient and friendlier usability wise. TLDR: Great camera ONLY IF you actually need 61mp and/or the other features. @learningcameras7 ай бұрын
The difference between DSLRs and Mirrorless is literally just a mirror....it doesn't improve quality, it just gets rid of the mirror. There are plenty of advantages though to getting rid of the mirror from more intelligent autofocus, faster frame rates, see what you get preview, and quite a few others. But if you just care about the image quality, a mirrorless camera is just a dslr minus the mirror. That said with fast readout stacked cmos sensors and global shutters, the mirrorless camera has now made way for the next leap in technology and they not only get rid of the mirror, but now the shutter which means no wear and tear, no viewfinder blackout, and significantly faster frame rates and that's massive...that's not just marketing. But some pros will still use DSLRs not because they are better but because of personal preference and just to stay unique and those are still valid reasons, just not enough for me to personally give up the massive features of mirrorless
