Designed by Bill Dixon this Center Cockpit Moody 54 is immensely strong, yet light enough to maintain optimum performance across the full range of ocean cruising conditions, the Moody 54 has been designed without compromise. The balance and power of her underwater sections and lead keel give superb sail carrying and stability for swift passages. Impressive sailing performance and designed to be sailed short handed by two people if desired. The classic fully battened mainsail and double furling head sails allow you to trim sails quickly. The electric primary winches and a heavy duty bow thruster make maneuvering easy.
Her interior is comfortable, and well designed for a family life at sea.

BUYER BEWARE! I paid to survey this boat. Had the inspection and survey done . A very small fraction of the problems that were identified.: the mast has been replaced but not disclosed. We identified it was not the same size as the original. Although no one had a history as to why. Standing rigging was in good condition however. Multiple signs of impact damage, hurricane or significant accident but the seller “ has no history “ The engine was seized in the Belge filled with oil just a few short months ago, there has been damage to the bow that can be observed from inside the chain locker with a repair that must be improved. The very sturdy windshield has been separated (through impact of some sort??) from the deck on the port side. The generator would not run for more than a brief period without tripping. I understand that someone else surveyed it after we stopped halfway through because there’s too many things that needed repair.. That other survey apparently found additional structural problems on hull . Primary winch drum is gauged and sharp (perhaps trying to winch wire standing rigging with dismantling? Just a guess}. The house battery bank was completely toast and there were multiple electrical question marks as well. I love this era of moody but unfortunately this one would need WELL over hundred thousand to get it safe to cross oceans IMO. If not much more and that is doing the work yourself. You would have to get it for under 100k to make it make sense. Do not buy this boat without an extensive survey. And not by someone the broker recommends. Find someone independent, CERTIFIED and out of the area to do a very thorough survey. Word of caution. I do not know if the broker (very nice people) are disclosing this info. The Brokerage is 100% is aware of all of these issues. Please verify 1. They are sharing this info with you, 2. If they say it an issue has been satisfied get written proof, invoices and statements from whoever did the repair that it is seaworthy.

I love Moody's and Centre Cockpits in general I don't like Teak Decks unless I have the money to pay someone else to maintain them . Based on a lifetime of building sailing and maintaining yachts including recently upgrading a Hood 38 for an offshore cruise my estimate to make this ready for an extended blue water cruise is 250K . I don't want to be critical of Surveyors but if you are an experienced yacht owner/maintainer/builder you will be far more vigilant in poking your nose into all those nooks and crannies with a critical eye where the subtle indicators of deeper damage/problems can exist . These are issues that wont be picked up by tapping with a hammer. Nice boat at the "Right Price" if the seller is realistic and honest, caveat emptor

@number1genoa
@number1genoa Ай бұрын
The first thing an insurance company will ask for is the age of the running and standing rigging , I have yet to buy a boat where the owner could provide evidence of that meaning a dismasting had to be an exclusion on the contract unless I weas prepared to replace the rigging. As for sails well if they are structurally sound albeit have lost some shape they are probably fine for cruising in protected waters but may not pass muster for offshore cruising .

Not anywhere. To do that you need a boat like Bernard Moitessier's Joshua. Double ended steel ketch, full keel (with separately stayed masts), inside steering, sheltered prop, integral rudder. Yeah that thing is an absolute BEAST! He STUPIDLY lost the boat during a hurricane when he wasn't even on it when it dragged anchors onto the rocks off of Baji and got piled up with other boats while he was partying! Somebody salvaged & restored it and its still sailing to this day. They did NOT remain it. Yep if a whale runs into this boat it dies, not the boat. I've read stories whereby glass boats are sunk by whales. I believe Joshua once had it's masts dipped in water rounding the horn. Do not know how true that was. Moitessier's first book has about 13 pages depicting the original build. Unreal. It was built in Turkey.

Why don't you tell us the boat name, size, builder and year before doing the tour? Standing at the helm you said (quote) " everything you need" but failed to tell us what the helm station actually had.. instrumentation, switches, control buttons, inhaul/outhaul ... what? what lines do the winches control? are they motorised? what power/size were the davits? ie what size tender could it hold? Was the transom part of the rear locker, ie its door/access from water , or is that separate? What instrumentation did the cockpit have? What make was the mast... was it stepped or what... how many spreaders.. was there solar, radar, what instrumentation was there... After 8 minutes of a 24 min video you had finished the external tour and then went below.... Its a sail boat and most of the most important stuff is outside... disappointing sales video in my opinion, when such a lovely boat could be presented and sold in much more professional manner...

Re decking: "I like the teak a lot"... you won't say that when you walk on it barefooted on a sunny day. Nor will you be thinking this when you have to pay big bucks to replace it and depending on how it is affixed to the deck underneath it, fixing any leaks that the screws that hold it down have caused.

Why do you refer to this as a deck saloon ?
@svechappe6075
@svechappe6075 2 ай бұрын
Deck salon designs emerged in the early 2000’s. The salon is raised up a couple steps above the normal level and the coach roof is also raised the same amount. That results in larger side windows into the salon along with usually a forward sloping skylight. The salon ends up having much more natural light than a traditional salon. The cockpit ends up being raised as well, so you get more headroom in the aft cabin. Our Jeanneau 54DS brought the deck salon approach into the mainstream and nowadays the deck salon is more the norm than the exception it was 20 years ago.

If you can buy the boat it doesn't stop there. Mooring, berthing, anti fouling, service and repairs. Having your money in a boat is a bit risky as you could lose it all through loss at sea or being wrecked. Prefer an open dayboat trailer sailer.

As someone who has been around sailboats my whole and is based on the East Coast, one of the most important parameters of sailboats is draft. Over 5ft. and you've got a real problem. This guy never mentions the draft, I'm guessing over 6 ft. With deep draft, boats can only go in the Ocean or very deep lakes. I.CW. is off limits (unless motoring or staying in the channel.) The Bahamas is off limits. Most bays and lakes, off limits. Boats like this are only good on the West Coast or as ocean sailors.

There isn’t one, not one, affordable sailboat that is 54’. Regardless of what you pay for a vessel, the operating costs are absolutely absurd for a sailboat this size. I work on these boats everyday and unless you have deep deep pockets there is no reason to step into this realm. We should be encouraging people to sail on small modest boats of 30ish feet. See the world, travel and have a boat you can maintain yourself and afford to operate.

Only one of the shitters has a hatch for ventilation over it and NEITHER have a fan so now your boat will stink like crap, cuz well we have to take a crap... no dodger = all electronics out in weather = nightmare maintenance, no ability to store anything overhead, does it even have an autopilot? I did not see any controls for one, cockpit has tiny back seats with NO comfortable backs on them, nav desk is useless as it has a straight wall back = NO one will ever sit there, kitchen has a TINY useless sink. Engine is impossible to get to, there is no way to hold onto anything to get to the head from the companioway unless you are a giant of a person.... Oh yea, tiny shallow cabinets in the kitchen = no quick food access or plates/cutlery and said kitchen does NOT have a hatch for ventilation!!! WTH? Useless! Looks great at anchor or on race day... Oh yea no lee cloth for the beds = when underway you roll right OFF the beds so it is IMPOSSIBLE to sleep while sailing. Genius "design" @@heiner71
