I lived and worked in Eindhoven two years in the eighties. I am from Denmark and learned Dutch, Philips offered me a course as expat. But as Linus told, whenever I tried to talk Dutch I was answered in English or German. I found a cure for that, I responded in danish. It always worked, the people switched to Dutch :-). I still enjoy hearing Dutch. Thank you for the channel!

What is Linus's native language? Is he teaching languages, or thinking to do so? Dutch people generally spoke to me in English when I was there in the army (week's leave) and did not encourage me to learn Dutch, since it was not widely spoken (I knew some German). Is his Dutch as good as it sounds?

The big terms mr and Aarde (meaning Earth in Dutch) cannot be in someone’s name or yt name, and all unsuitable names or yt names must be edited out / changed - even the name Linus is unsuitable for hum’ns, because it has Lin in it and it also has nus / nuss (a food term in German) and, such terms and the name Lin etc only reflect me, while mr only reflects my pure protectors aka the alphas!

But anwy, wasn’t it implied that the first language was German? Plus, he kinda has a bit of a German accent vibe! TBH, some of those answers were shocking - how could a native Dutch speaker say to somebody that one shouldn’t learn Dutch because it is only spoken by a few hum’ns, or saying that it “geen mooie taal is” which is not even true, because Dutch & English are actually the prettiest languages in the world, and also Norwegian etc!

I’ve been learning Dutch & Norwegian & Swedish etc for a few months, and I learned over 6.000 base words in Dutch and over 3.500 base words in Norwegian, and also in Swedish, and I am also learning Welsh / German / OId Norse / French / Breton / Irish / Gallo / Icelandic / OId English etc, and I can’t wait to become very fluent in Dutch & Norwegian etc!

I am so glad that Linus talked about how it actually feels when people speak back to you in English. That it is so bad for your confidence! I would also ask people like the Dutch, Danes, Swedes etc who so often speak back in English to think about the following. Even though your motives may be good, it comes across as 'passive aggressive' in two ways. Firstly, you're passive aggressively telling the person that their language level is low and your English is better. It's often true but actually not always. Secondly, and much worse by refusing to let someone speak in your language it feels like you are passive aggressively telling them they are an outsider and not welcome into your group. It’s like your language is for you alone, and not for outsiders. If you refuse to let a foreigner use your language, it can be perceived as a quite unpleasant way of making them feel unwelcome.

i kinda disagree with this, i will speak what i estimate might be faster 2 get 2 the end of this conversation with this stranger. if the person speaks decent dutch i will speak dutch back , but if i notice u cannot comprehend what i am saying or not enough so 2 make this conversation going smoothly or fast, then i will change 2 english. i am not your free teacher on the sidewalk, i am a stranger that suddenly got spoken 2 by another stranger and time is money /my time, if you so desperately want 2 speak dutch with a person while not being able 2 make the conversation go smoothly then i suggest asking a friend for this, or go 2 school. therefor in my opinion , if you cannot make a conversation without making hand gestures and humming after every word for a second or 2 and still come up without something making sense , you should expect a person 2 switch 2 English .

I wouldn’t even bother trying to speak with hum’ns - most speak too fast, anwy, and don’t speak clearly, so I don’t even understand how can most hum’ns understand each other... Besides, when one speaks fast and seems to be rushing everything, it’s clear that one is just trying to get it over with as fast as possible, esp oude hum’ns... If one really wanted to talk to someone, he would speak clearly and not too fast, and he wouldn’t rush things, and would be patient etc... Maybe the younger dudez are more patient in general, I don’t know... So, if one really wants to practice speaking a new language that way, by speaking with random strangers, one should usually try speaking with the younger dudez instead, because I don’t think younger ones are as hostile and rushed as the oude ones, at least from what I noticed...

This is a common situation. For a number of learners similarities between languages are confusing. I lived in Ukraine for a long time and learned Russian. After getting a good level of Russian, I tried Ukrainian, thinking my Russian will help me, but the pronunciation, false friends, different uses of the same words an many other things proved that I thought wrong.

I think there is a difference between having German as a mother language and having learned German. If German is your second or third language, then I can well imagine that you have difficulties with the German language when you learn Dutch. Ik denk dat er een verschil is tussen Duits als moedertaal hebben en Duits geleerd hebben. Als Duits je tweede of derde taal is, dan kan ik me goed voorstellen dat je moeite hebt met de Duitse taal als je Nederlands leert.

The way words like fijn / pijn / trein etc and zegt and brand etc and the Es that are pronounced EY (usually before a consonant + another E, like in the word verzekering / ferzeykuhring) are pronounced also makes Dutch the language with the hottest sound! And luckily, most that speak Dutch and most younger Dutch speakers use a soft G and the Americanized R and the soft R, which sound so pretty, and many in Naderland use a medium-soft G, and the medium-soft G is kind of okay too! From what I noticed, only oude people usually seem to have a very hard G, except for those from Belgium, as all use a soft G in Belgium!

I agree with all he says. I'm learning dutch since my arrival in Flandes 15 month ago. Although my native language is spanish it helps me a lot to have learned enlgish first and have studied some german in the school. The dutch is in the between indeed. And it is also really true that it is quiet difficult to put it in practice given the fact that in Flandes people also switch inmediatly to the english. So I will also start to apply the "I do not speak english" trick.

The Netherlands is situated between England and Germany, so Dutch looks a lot like English and German at the same time. But when the so-called 'VOC' (Vereenigde Oost-indische Compagnie) had its power in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), Dutch was called 'Nederduytsch', or Low German. So, in 16th century, Dutch looked more like German than today. Ancient inscriptions and documents found in museums in Jakarta shows people this fact. Such words as "der, des, den" were used by the Dutch at that time.

I tried to pretend to not speak English but either it is too obvious that i do or they assume that i should be able to speak at least bad English. Ja, heel herkenbaar. 😢 Soms doen Nederlanders zo raar.

If you can speak Dutch as a foreigner it's awesome, but can you speak English with a Dutch accent?? 😏hmm another question right there. That's a-whole-nother skill all on it's own, if you can nail both, you are naturalized already
