Can you earn good money as a PDR tech? Now that is one of the questions that we see time and time again, popping up on youtube comments and social media. So in this video, I'm going to try and use the analogy of getting paid for playing football and we'll see if it makes sense.

Nice little video Tom. I noticed over the years that some people have an inbuilt skill set for the trade, and other are cackhanded from the start! Like your football analogy I think there has to be that initial creative way of thinking, and being dextrose enough to put it into practice. It's still a good way to earn a living but way more competitive nowadays.

Thanks, I'm not hugely into football myself so wasn't sure if the analogy made sense, but it really is one of the most commonly asked questions 'can you earn good money'. Its definitely competitive and some will naturally take to the skills easier than others but it is definitely still a growing industry with heaps of potential to do very well too!

OK your answer doesn't really answer the video point, if starting out what would be an average ballpark, I get everyone's ambition is different. Based on limited time served would it be realistic to earn 20k 1st year and where would be a good stream of clients is it via insurance

Yes its a tricky one but the video asks 'can you can earn good money as a pdr tech?' and my answer is yes! It is down to you the technician/business owner as to how much you earn. There are plenty of cars out there and plenty of dents to go around so its your job as the business to get your marketing right for the volume of customers you want. Most of my customers are retail, I do not do much trade work and very rarely do I do insurance work. For trade and insurance work you generally need to network and get in with the right people who will feed you work where as for the retail market you usually need to be easy to find online. A member of public will usually go online and search for a local repair service so for retail work its more important to get your website or social media and reviews visible and ranking well on searches. When I started off my repair business I did it part time 2-3 days a week until I built up my customer base to take it full time.

Hi Andy, not sure what you mean, do you mean not painted? If so then I'm not sure never tried.

Correct not painted. I was wondering if dents could be pulled out of pontoon floats which are aluminum and not painted. Thanks anyway.

@@andyratliff5257 Ah ok I see, I would expect most of the glues to work on aluminium, the most important thing is a clean dry warm surface for the glue to adhere to. it will of course depend on the level of damage along with the thickness of the metal but in theory it should work the same!

No you can’t, max pay is about 16/hr. I make 12.50hr and making a killing

I don't understand, are you saying you cant make good money or that you are making a killing? if you work for yourself then there is no limit on how much you can earn right? hourly rate implies you are employed working for someone else?

Your being screwed there is no way you make a max pay of 16 an hour. I'm only into PDR a year and a half and I average $120 an hour. Whoever you are working for you should tell them to go **** themselves.

@@danielheckel2755 per month is not really how this works. You can make good money on retail dents. But you better be damn good if you're going to try that because you are liable for anything that breaks and I've broken glass. Your work for 2 hours just to turn around and spend $400 bucks. Hail cars insurance pay is where the money's at you make money per season. I had a slow season this year I only made 35,000. But I'm working like 60% less than I did in my old job to make the same amount of money. This industry is the same as being a roofer when it hails it's raining money if it doesn't hail you're not making money.

@@danielheckel2755 when I started the average pay in my state was $74,000. Now the average pay is $52,000. I work for someone that's been doing this 31 years he was fixing hail with homemade tools before tools were ever even on the market. The corporate overlords have decimated this industry like they have every other industry. He used to make six figures every year and it's best years were about 390 and an average good year was about 200,000. He can barely make six figures now. Nobody drives and does hail anymore because the broker wants 50% for doing about 2% of the work. I've talked to guys that have driven out to work and drive right back home,the money is not good. I would suggest you not doing PDR in my honest opinion. The industry is dying.
