Aftermarket camshafts are an obvious path to go down when you’re on the hunt for more power, but there’s a lot of misunderstanding out there when it comes to the subject. This episode of Tuned In intends to clear some of that up.

Thomas Goatley of ‪@Kelford-Cams‬sits down with us this week to dive deep into the world of performance camshafts because, while the basic concept may seem simple enough, there’s a whole lot of fascinating science and engineering that goes into camshaft manufacture and selection - and it’s all absolutely worth digging into.
Thomas starts by breaking down a huge range of cam-related terms and explains how it all really works and why each aspect matters. Expect to gain a really good understanding of lift, duration, lash, lobe separation angles, and much more.
There’s also a lot that goes into selecting the right cams, which is something that enthusiasts commonly get wrong through a lack of understanding of their own engine build, how cams actually work, or what it is they’re actually wanting. Hint - scrolling straight to the bottom of the list and ordering the biggest, baddest cams in the catalogue rarely works out well. Thomas details the common mistakes that people often make around cam selection and the best ways to avoid them.
With discussions on NA versus turbo considerations, different manufacturing method pros and cons, as well as the importance of proper break-in procedure and cam timing, this conversation is a goldmine for anyone looking to up their knowledge in the performance headwork and camshaft game.

Thanks for the advice! I was able to get and install the appropriate camshaft for my 13b RX8 thanks to this segment. Greatly appreciate it ❤️👍

Next time you throw out a comment at least make sure it’s at least half ass believable, since a Mazda 13b engine is a rotary engine it doesn’t even use camshafts. 😂

@@HashiriyaSquadron Dunno what turbo & how big you're going but I'd say kelford 246-A or 246-A2 would suit most, stock aren't too terrible & the old poncams aren't bad but I'd guess the kelfords & depends a lot on what you're building

I haven't got all the way through it yet but is more lift at the same duration generally always a good thing when it comes to performance? Accepting that its much harder on the valve train of course
@Kelford-Cams
@Kelford-Cams 2 жыл бұрын
In short yes, however there is a velocity limit that we don't go past, under that limit it's completely safe to max out the lift per degree of duration. Lobe optimization is definitely a must 👌

What is OE manufacturers doing to their modern camshaft profiles to be able attain a smooth idle, yet still be able to rev high in a Naturally Aspirated application? Big lift/durations with big LSA?

@@nismofreak33 Variable cam timing definitely contributes in a big way in the low and mid range total width of the power band, but it's still not still common to me, to see an engine that can rev to 9k with a static cam profile with a stock smooth idle, even with a variable timing gear. I.E 1LR-GUE I've recently attained a 1GZ-FE - I'm going with a Naturally Aspirated approach, so I'm trying to educate myself a little bit more before I attempt to reach out to a Cam manufacture for a custom profile down the road. Aftermarket cams in high revving NA builds typically has tons of overlap from what I'm familiar with. Honda V-TEC is literally two different profiles in one cam, so that's an exception to me.
