Thank you for these. I am having a lot of trouble learning even the simplest things in Vietnamese. I like that your videos explain the very basic things that I need to understand to really start learning. My boyfriend speaks perfect English, but when he's with his family they speak nothing but Vietnamese, and I don't want to be the only one left out of the conversation! So I'm trying to learn. I have a long way to go, but it looks like you have a lot of videos for me to learn from! Thanks!

@Chimlele1 & Sohn Shin: In my opinion, when we talk about Southern dialect, we should make clear that which accent we choose to represent for it. You are right that Tr/Ch, S/X can be pronounced differently in some parts of the South (for example, Mekong delta area), but if we choose Saigon accent to be the representative one, then these two pairs should be pronounced identically. As a Saigoner, I pronounce them identically. Therefore, I think what I presented in the video still makes sense :)

Thank you very much Annie. Pronunciation in Vietnamese has always been a challenge for me. I tell people that I am able to read and write the language much more easily than I can speak it or understand listening to it. This is quite the opposite of Chinese, which to me is relatively easy to speak, but impossible to read when using Chinese characters. When I traveled to Vietnam before my friends were both from the north and the south, so what I did learn to speak was often a mixture of the two accents. My friends and I were all very patient though, and we managed to get along very well, even when communication was a challenge. I also teach a little English informally online. If you have any questions about English, feel free to ask me. Thanks again for your videos. They are very helpful to me and I'm sure to others too.

Thank you so much for this! One of the best videos for learning Vietnamese. I like how you compare some of the sounds to ones in English, and explain things when pronouncing the different syllables/consonants, such as having the air flow through your throat, or lifting the tongue so it touches the roof of your mouth, etc. I don't see that on many other videos so I really appreciate it! I will definitely be watching more of your videos so I can learn better. *^_____^*

Thanks for making Vietnamese language videos that actually cover the southern dialect! That's the one I need to learn, and so many of the lessons out there either don't specify and just make things more confusing by teaching me sounds I don't need, or are actively teaching the northern dialect for tourists traveling to Vietnam. I'm just trying to understand my in-laws here in California, and don't plan on ever going to Vietnam. I love how you point out the different sounds used in the different dialects and specify which ones I'm not going to need to use.

@Yosef: For your first question: Except lesson 1 (in which I teach 5 expressions) that I speak very clear Southern accent, I speak something between Southern and Northern accent - something closer to the writing. Regarding to your second question: it depends on where you will live and to whom you will talk. For example, if you are moving to Saigon and people all around you speak Southern accent, learning Southern accent will be more convenient.

Thank you very much. Glad that I've found your channel because I know I can't read Vietnamese like the way I read English. I used to have a Vietnamese friend whose surname is Tran and I thought it was 'tran' as in 'transport'. When he told me the correct pronunciation, I realized he had the same surname as my mother which is 陳 (Chen /Chan). I've been watching a lot of Vietnamese MVs online have always wanted to know how the names of the artistes are pronounced, such as Nguyen Duc Phuc. With this knowledge I can infer that his name in Chinese characters is 阮德福. Then, I know the meaning of his personal name is moral /virtue + blessings / fortune. I don't mean to be patronizing, I think I would be good that Vietnamese preserve their names in Hantu (Chinese characters).

The s/x merger and the tr/ch merger are not merged everywhere in the South, but they ARE merged everywhere in the North.

So, almost everyone in VN says "suh" (6:42) and "chuh" (7:37), so to speak? Although this apparently causes pairs of very different VN words to sound the same as each other, I suppose it's easy enough to understand the context (i.e., dew vs. bone; noon vs. not yet).

Girl, you messed up. In northern accent, we unify X and S, and in southern accent, we differentiate the two. Same thing with TR and CH. You just mixed up the two accents.

cookielookieᄋ ᅳ ᄋ, Yeah you did, but I don’t know if you spelled it right. Sorry, I’m not a professional on Vietnamese, so I’m not sure. Wait, is Anh Truong your friend? You said “thank you, friend” ,sooooo I’m confused.

Annie, Thanks for the video, it's very helpful for practicing Vietnamese pronunciation, but where the other three episodes are? I can't find them. I'm really looking forward to watch the rest of them. Thanks :)
