Morel mushrooms are a lot easier to find when you understand their tree associations. In this video, we take a good look at some of the trees under which you're most likely to find Morels.

I'm 63 years old and I've been looking for morel mushrooms for about 40 years here in TN. I guess you can learn something new all the time. I never new how to identify poplar trees. Best morels my family has ever found were around dead apple trees high up on the mountain . What a great video. Thanks Adam !

I love this episode. Well, I love all of them. Three trees are enough to get me started. Thanks for all the details to identify trees. I'm 65 but I know people much older than me who can identify trees in the winter, and I always wondered how they could do it - and now I know. Also, I don't like the texture of most mushrooms (the spongy chewy thing does not work for me) but I love morels. They have a great flavor and nice texture. Thank you so very much. I'm a loyal follower. I also rewatch episodes all the time as I want to solidify the information in my brain. I'm in NC 7b.

Morel picker my whole life. What I learned is they grow almost anywhere. If you see dead elm trees, yes go there, probably some mushrooms. But anywhere there is dead woods, that's a good place to look especially for whites. In a poplar forest that had dead standing and fallen timber, we would get 5 to 20 pounds per year... and this was maybe 10 acres of forest, not a big stand of trees at all. Another great place to find them is in lawns, or under fruiting trees that have grass under them. What you do is dump spore water in those areas, and then mushrooms pop up, and if they really get going they'll keep popping up. Morels love lawns inside forested areas.

I was told that it is important to use a net style bag to put picked models in to allow the spores to drop back onto the ground. In Michigan, some places we had found morals, no longer grew them, because hunters had used solid bag which didn't allow the spores to drop.

I really enjoy your thoroughness in your descriptions! My Mom used to tromp the hills of Brownville NE and find tons of mushrooms, and since that area along the bluff of the MO River was laden with orchards, I can now understand why they were so plentiful in the overgrown hillsides. She was a hunter extraordinaire, but I can be standing on top of them and not see them! ha. Thanks for going to the trouble to be complete in your identifications and your information! And for the memory nudge!

You’re so knowledgeable and helpful, not condescending or talking over anyone’s head, but still on top of the science and simultaneously personable and down to earth. I love how clear and concise you make your videos, with little side interests that don’t ever get carried away into drawn out bunny trails, but display a real depth. Your composition-both audio and video-also excellent. Some informational videos are too difficult to hear or painful to eyes or ears because of tones or camera movements. Excellent.

I'm 66 years old have lived in south central Ia. my whole life. When I was very young my Grandfather and Father taught me to look for dead or dieing Elms. The Best trees had "woke up dead" in the spring, with absolutely no buds or any green. So, just like you have indicated, I always instruct new morel hunters to start hunting by looking up for dead trees. I once was out looking in a low lying area near an intermittent creek bed. As I approached a raised bank on a bend, I could see the top of a very large dead Elm tree with a 30" diameter trunk and the bark was still on it. I clamored up the slick bank and saw a 30' diameter ring of fresh morels! I picked all that I could find, about 200! This tree was very low in a valley that would not be very windy even in high winds. The tree was being undermined by a shallow swale and there were more mushrooms leading down the swale. I returned the next spring and the tree was completely down and there were no mushrooms at all. I sometimes find these proverbial "Dead Elms" on the sides of hills where they are exposed to more winds. I have wondered if wind direction has anything to do with finding mushrooms in one particular direction from the tree or not, as sometimes I find them in only one direction sometimes even uphill from the tree with none in the other directions? Then also, I have noticed that the mushrooms are carried down hill by rain away from the tree, and they follow swales that are moist away downhill. I will probably catch some flack about leaving some mushrooms for the next season, but I don't think that that makes any difference. Realistically, I probably didn't find them all anyway. Thanks for all of your expertise and insight !

This is an older video, but it isn't the first of your's that I've watched. All of them are very informative and that's what folks are looking for on subjects like this and nobody, that I'm aware of, does it better than you. I mean that, genuinely. I like to harvest mushrooms when I stumble on to them, but the primary reason I watched this video is because I am always looking for tree identifying information. I like to do bushcraft projects and many of them involve trees of a specific type. I can't use them if I can't identify them, so that becomes an issue. Any videos that you feel compelled to produce on identifying trees in all seasons would really help me and many others, as there is a lack of them (good ones) on YT. Great video and thanks for taking the time to produce the content.

Adam, one of the aspects you have in addition to knowledge and enthusiasm is how brite you are as in an inner (de)light in being.

I'm a newbie here, I've never and didn't know anyone till this past year that hunted for the morels. I believe I will try it next year. You are very good at explaining and teaching. I like the way you give a complete explanation for people like me but also include more technical terms.

Hi Adam, What a great video! I am originally from Illinois where we found Morels in our front and backyard. I now live in the Rochester NY area where it has been a challenging few years (20 to be exact) to even find 1. I was really impressed with your presentation and have gained some valuable information to help in my search for Morels. Thanks again! John W

You're welcome, John! Have you heard of Allegheny Woodrat Mushroomers? It's a Western New York mushroom club run by my friend Garrett Taylor. He leads several walks throughout the year, and he's very skilled in the subject.

I hear and have experienced morels around tulip popular trees come out later in the season, so if one is to late for elms, might want to try popular trees. Also, I trend to find morels on flats or old logging roads, here in the steep mountains of SW West Virginia, although they are fairly rare here. TY for another great video. Keep them coming!

Ronnie, that has been my observation as well - I typically find the tulip tree Morels in May, at least here in Western PA. One species I have luck finding under these trees is Morchella diminutiva (the one pictured in the thumbnail and intro shot). Thanks for watching and commenting!
