Flintlock Muzzleloader Deer Hunt 2019. Follow John as he films his cousin Andrew during the opening day of the early muzzleloader doe season in Clarion county Pa. Andrew is using a .50 Caliber Thompson Center Hawken Flintlock Muzzleloader with a patched roundball. Andrew experiences the struggles of hunting with a flintlock but ends up connecting on a small doe to fill his first muzzleloader tag. Congrats Andrew! Hope you enjoy this great black powder hunt!

I would like to make a good point about the loading of all the people who are interested in loading muzzleloader don't have your hands or fingers on the end of the ramrod you might lose your hand if a misfire occurs.

I know lots of people are giving you grief but I just wanted to say this is one of the best and most honest videos I've seen recently. Sure it's not the biggest but then most of the people including me here have never hunted with flintlock. What makes it even better is you didn't act like punks after your kill. You showed joy but not hubris.

Just a few miles from where I live Lewis and Clark told about killing a grizzly. It took several of them shooting before the bear died.

Well remember that these were the only rifles they had, so they were the only rifles they practiced. There are some great hunters with primitive muzzle loaders these days, but I doubt any of them have ONLY practiced shooting those kinds of guns since childhood the way our ancestors did.

Great video guys. The struggle is real with a flint that doesn’t spark. I nap mine with a brass napping tool to get a sharp edge and so far the fun goes off fine.

I've had misfires,and a hang fire with a cap lock, I can't even imagine trying to kill a deer with a flintlock, good job !!

Only one thing wrong... No Sweet Ice Tea!! I'm a Southerner, I gotsta have sweet ice tea!! They had Peach Tea. That held me over until I got back down South again.

Just need to know what flints to use, our muzzleloaders go off almost every time you pull the trigger and always bring a paper clip to clean the nipple out so the primer can go into the black powder and ignite it easily

@@spacemanceelo8417 Pipe cleaners work well also. Seems to clear out more residue. I use Crisco to lube the barrel, inside and out. Sorry, I have no access to bear fat.

Being from Pa also great shot shooting the flintlock back in the 70s then percusson was great.. Tips keep your powder dry n ream your touch hole out one size bigger for better ignition works great n still safe.. Hold the gun a few seconds longer to your shoulder after shooting unlike smokeless powder..

i have a thompson hawken that had the same problem with the frizzen i replaced the lock with one from dixie gun works and now it doesn t misfire i got 2 deer with a flintlock so far a 8 pointer at 50 yrds and a 10 pointer at a 100 yrds with a lymans trade rifle 54 cal the 10 pointer was appx 300 lbs good video wish we had as much deer [n Canada and a early black powder season

Jerimiah Johnson used a 50 cal. Hawken. That was my first black powder rifle 23 years ago. That movie was my favorite and thats what inspired me to get that first BPR. I ordered it as a kit from Cabela's, I believe it was under 300.
